The AGP Classics Match of the Week goes back to Quake 3 this week. 2000 XS Reality Invitational: Sujoy Roy said at the time that it was "one of the most exciting matches I've ever seen" and he is right. This great oldie takes place in the tournaments loser bracket semi-finals. Being the first mainly international tournament in Quake 3, held in Sweden and being invite only, the tournament had no prize money although most players were paid sponsorship money by Razer following in addition to travel.
Loser Bracket Semi: Mark "Wombat" Larsen vs Oskar "LakermaN" Ljungstroem
Maps: Vertical Vengeance (T4) and the Proving Grounds (T2)
In before yall. Do you like the matches or what? lol. T4 is interesting without teleporter and ya's. There aim is pretty good too considering this match is one of the earliest tournaments.

Gotta remember that wombat won Ground Zero CPL and placed second at FRAG 3 largely because they were Q3Test and what became T2 only which had a more powerful LG, so those tournaments were basically just who had the best LG aim and lots of running/hiding with like 2-1 type game scores.
In fact he had a 30 min sudden death game vs. xenon at FRAG 3 cos he literally just ran all game and refused to engage, so xenon got so sick of it he rocketjumped at him and died doing so.
Also LakermaN really hadn't locked into heavy Quake 3 at this point, his Razer CPL result a few months later was really poor as he came 25th-32nd.
So TBH this is a matchup which looks better on paper than it actually was. That said from memory wombat had a nice PG kill onto LakermaN at one point on T4.
Makaveli-Wombat on T4 from XSi was a good game from what I remember, Makaveli is down a few and hits a bunch of flick rails to take over.
Good points. This match was pretty good though even if skill is all someone focuses on. It wasn't the final. It was in 2000 and it was the beginning of Quake 3. Ball mice ftw.
Thanks for the insight man. I got into the game much later and really know nothing about this period except bits and pieces. =)
Does anyone know why through-floors got taken out? Was it a community understanding? Or did id just do away with it?
id just changed it without telling anyone when they brought out the 1.27 update (IIRC) so when everyone upgraded from their 1.17 installation it was just gone. I don't think they even mentioned it in the release notes where they tell you what they 'fixed'.
Pretty idiotic thing to take out IMO, basically broke T4 until the pro- maps came along. Also helped on dm13 if you were firing at someone who was at RL when you were at RA etc.
id brought us the abortion that was 1.25 with a number of things, including fixed movement (with gimped jump height) and removal of thrufloors.
Bitching prevailed and we got to keep the fps dependant movement with pmove_fixed as an option, but still without thrufloors.
1.25/1.27 was the set of updates that indeed removed splash damage through floors... They also attempted to make lg only give you 50 ammo instead of 100 (this change was met with an open letter by CZM, and they reverted it back to normal, but I don't know if it was CZM's letter), and they changed the functionality of cl_timenudge. Iirc, Fatal1ty was quoted in an interview at Quakecon this year as saying that he preferred 1.17 over the later versions. Glad I wasn't alone on that one :).
Ahhh! Thanks for the replies, and yes i would have to agree that it was a bad thing. I really liked it and it added an element of surprise. A ctf server i used to play had it on and it made some crazy turn-arounds possible. Cant remember map, but you could bounce them off the bridges and force them to lose the high ground advantage.
Man, seemed like there was a lot of drama with point releases, good thing i started playing at 1.31 =p Thanks again dudes!
What annoyed me most was seeing wombat rush into lakerman in terrible situations over and over at the start, then later on it became apparent that neither player was even attempting to time the YAs and missed several good opportunities to be aggressive and exert greater control because of it.
Poor aim and movement I can put up with (and fully understand/appreciate), such naive play I can't, it's not like timing items was a new concept and there were only two armours...
it was an exhibition tournament. none of us really gave two shits, since we were sent to sweden to not give two shits.
it was also extremely loud, since we were in a gaming center with lots of media and spectators literally 10 feet away from us at all times. almost impossible to play a good match there.
I wasn't saying they were low skill back then, I was saying it's hard to enjoy these low skill games now.
There's no need to defend the honour of these players, everyone knows they were some of the best in the world back when this game was played, doesn't make it interesting or fun to watch.
Thorin, are you kidding me? While some may not like this game, let's remember that, like Thorin said, this was from the very very beginning of Quake3. That being said, your Razer argument is invalid. I went to XSi, and didn't do well at all. Probably the worst of all the Americans.
At RazerCPL, I placed 8 while my brother (yes, he didnt place nearly as well) got his ass handed to him by the brackets. It happens to everyone. Are you going to say Fatality was a poor Q4 player because at first, he wasn't placing?
Wombat was, and still is, one of the very best I've ever played with and against.
you guys lack the capability of projecting your thoughts in those old days.
damn fuck this blunt generation....
*do you think ur not ridiculous ? ur recent skill / the recent avergage skill nowdays will also be considered bad to a certain extend in 10 years or so.
i claim they have better skill than 99% of esr visitors including you. the material they had to work with (hardly any demos, softer competition, beeing pioneers and not leechers of occured stuff , mice and monitors were worse. etc)
maybe you have another definition of "skill", but than becomes * operative.
I'm not sure what you are trying to say.
But I don't think that the monitors used back then where worse than what we have seen at some tournaments in the last 2-3 years.
- About monitor you don't need 125 hz ... 80 hz is enough
- About fps, com_maxfps 72 was the correct value (83 offline).
- About mouse, if a guy like ZeRo4 was using a ball mice recently imo the ball mice was not so bad too.
- About mouse pad, Fatality was using a carpet since the beginning.
1) no, bullshit. higher is (a lot) better.
2) as long as we had fps dependant physics there was no 'correct' value and higher was better (remember fazz playing tdm for eyeballers with 333 fps). also with 125fps being the norm 120hz is the 'correct' value.
3) when was 'recently'? everyone including zero4 eventually switched over because optical mouse are superior.
4) he didn't use a 'carpet' but something called supermat. his own fatality mousepads were later designed after it.
Cunt-fuckers, i'll tell you what. . . . No mother-fucker would rather watch video game football compared to actual football. You fucking whore's must learn, to stay with reality is like Usain Bolt only using one-leg. Halo is the most un-professional pile of garbage ever created.
You should omit the "AGP Classics" icon at the top of the video for many reasons. Also, check "wateri14"'s channel on youtube for some config/video conversion ideas. He has the best quake channel on the internet. No offence, but your configs are pretty bad.
It's widescreen. But if youa re watching it on ESR it will have letter box bars on it. Not on YouTube itself though. ESR has old YouTube settings and hasn't been updated as far as I know. It is why there is a black box encircling the Q3 vids.
could you do the lexer daler dm6 qcon demo and include the wheat commentary please?
the packs (20mb) on cyberfight, and i think it might be on here too. i have the pack etc but would be nice to get it up on youtube. (unless it already is)
thats the whole point, its identical, the video itself is using a wrong AR, it looks low bitrate, not to mention half the videos stutter and give ppl headaches, surely the agp can do better than that? :p
in the end of original t4 lakerman was best on that map... see lakerman fatality t4 from amd Xsi 2 and lakerman zero4 from cpl Babbages superfinal... heh all strategy were - stay near RA and see jumppads
It's amazing how dramatically gaming has evolved since then. Anyone saying that they suck have no clue of evolution (the meaning of the word and not evolution in relation to living beings) and they never will because their brain won't evolve enough to understand. The wiseguys will always complain about the past because it happened and it is a fact so it's easy to talk bad about and act like a wise motherfucker. Then again these ppl will also never change anything in the future. They will just complain again and be wise guys. I don't get mad at them, I don't dislike them, I'm just fucking happy I am not so extremely limited when retracing such old games ;)
I thought it was interesting to watch these oldschool matches.
