the home neo geo is the priciest one =/ arcade one and arcade games are far less but no room for a cab =)
this converted arcade mobo looks like a good solution but i imagine the price is going to rise quite a bit in the next few days.

In don't have any experience with superguns, but I wager that they don't take that much space compared to a cab. While I haven't owned one, the user experience that I have read says that the ngcd is ass, the load times on later games is horrible.

The neo-geo is quite manageable after all. Nowadays, most KoF's and Fatal Fury or Samurai Shodown games do not cost any more than current gen console games.

Imo best way to go, if you don't have burning desire to play or own something specific, would be to scout someone who is selling console+games package of any of the consoles mentioned. You can bargain good deals that way and probably get a good deal off the price because they want to sell everything anyway...

Can you shed some light what kind of collection you have yourself?

dreamcast, saturn, nintendo64, playstation, master system, gamecube, nintendo ds, psp, xbox 360, xbox and playstation 3 are all the console things i own so not that much 'retro' stuff at the moment. dreamcast is definatly my favourite out of the lot.
might pick up a mega drive and snes after christmas on ebay.

i want to start a collection on a bit of a rarer system which is why im looking at pc-engine/neogeo/cd32/jaguar, i think pc-engine is the one im going to go for unless i can source a neo-geo and not break the bank.

Im already a bit fed up with collecting games, so I would rather go for the ones I would have most fun to play on, rather than rarest or like in Neo Geo case known in and out ones. So my choice would be most likely Saturn and Nintendo 64, and maybe if I seriously wanted something less known as part of collection, it could be 3DO.

As far as Amiga goes I would stick with fully fledged computers, but I must say I like how CDTV looks :P

I have a cd32 still; they can usually be picked up pretty cheap, but the standard commodore controller is terrible, the only decent replacement being the 'competition pro' pad.

There's plenty of good compilation CDs of amiga games that are designed to run cd32s, but little in the way of good dedicated cd32 software, really. Even the CD32 version of syndicate was just the same as the A500 version :/
Jetstrike CD32 is a laugh, + there are 'enhanced' versions of chaos engine / speedball 2

Captive 2/liberation was quite interesting back in the day, not sure whether it's stood the test of time though

The amiga, CD32 included, is so well emulated by winuae thesedays that it might be best to just stick with winUAE, unless playing normal amiga games or having a sensible soccer tournament on a big telly with friends appeals :D

This summer I plan on getting an NES, SNES, Genesis, maybe a 64, not sure.

The way I look at it, I can get all that for the cost of a 360 + a game, maybe a bit more, yet I KNOW I'll be happy with all of those.

I want to use the classic controllers with them. I've played many games on many emulators, I rather own the systems and keep them and collect the games etc.

there are many controller on the pc market that are look a likes to the console controllers (I bought myself an xbox 360 controller, because I can pretty much use it as a snes controller as well) ... I think there are even converters out there so you can just plug in an original controller to your usb port ...
and last but not least you can get a higher quality of the video signal through your pc.

I just recently found my old NES still in the box with everything original except for the bright orange gun- I can't seem to find it, but everything works just as good as new. I also have (wait, maybe "had") an original sega console (the one before genesis), sega genesis & gameboy. Gameboy tetris all the way!

decided to go with the dreamcast, my fave console of all time plus i already own one.

House of the dead 2 with the light gun was a work of art!

i have an old crt that i left at my mums but not really any room here

i couldn't get a lightgun to work on a desktop CRT although I'm talking about the original time crisis PS1 models. I had the PS1 hooked up via the TV card and assumed the gun I had purchased was faulty. 2 returns and it was on the third time I realised it was the CRT.

perhaps it was something to do with refresh rates?

dont know of any probs with CRT's only that no guns will work with LCD apart from anything on the latest consoles

pretty much any arcade game on the DC is good fun, and some weired shit like that Seaman(?) game which was a tamagotchiclone you could talk to via the mic-controller.

OH and Quake3 of course with keyboard and mouse \:D/

ikaruga, shenmue, rez, soul caliber, street fighter 3, power stone.

with the dreamcast because it was basically the same hardware in the sega arcade cabs (NAOMI) at the time you get perfect arcade conversions of all segas current hits from around that time, which was alot, some like crazy taxi, virtua tennis and ferrari 355 challenge. it also plays host to a big selection of shoot em ups such as trizeal, radirgy and border down. it also has alot of 2d fighters such as the street fighter series and SNK titles like garou and king of fighters.

pretty much all these games were brought from the sega arcades onto the dreamcast.

as for collecting theres plenty of titles to be picked up cheap and then theres the rarer stuff such as border down, plus all the exrta peropherals that came out for it. games are still being made and sold through indie site redspotgames.
