Secondly, I did not base that on my sole opinion, but also asked ini (aka iNkind) whether he understood what you were trying to say. He denied that. Do you really think your English is better than that of a British guy?
Thirdly, I did live in the US for half a year and visited the High School there. Then and later in the advanced english class in my German school, I was good enough to interpret texts from people like Shakespeare, Robert Browning and Twain. And six16 let's me correct his posts, here :P

I have also travelled abroad many times. But you are of course correct, if I went to live abroad my somewhat rusty English would improve again. Looking forward to three weeks in the US in march :)

Lastly, I have also worked as a math and English tutor for two years, so I did learn a bit about evaluating someone's abilities. Which is why I wrote my last post as a sort of constructive criticism.

Here's what you did wrong:


1. The verb at the beginning of a sentence like yours must either use the gerund form or a "to + infinitive" construction. In this case the gerund is correct. You used an imperative form as in "Make love, not war!", which obviously does not work in this sesntence.

2. "most stupidities" in this case is wrong. I am very certain you were trying to use a superlative. However, "stupidity" for which you so nicely provided the link is not an adjective but a noun. You can not form a superlative using most + a noun.
Correct versions would be:
a) the superlative forms of stupid, "most stupid" or "stupidest" + a some noun (for example "idea")
b) a different superlative, e.g. biggest -> biggest stupidities (I think this one conveys your intention in the best way)
c) most + a different adjective, e.g. common -> most common stupidities.

3. This one is a bit more advanced. When talking about all the people on earth, there is only one humanity, therefore the possessive pronoun is normally omitted. For example, you can only say "My humanity is better than your humanity.", when we a talking about a science fiction game where we are both evoling som sort of humanities.


Conclusion:

If you knew when you are wrong you would have written something like: "Making war is one of the biggest stupidities of humanity."
Hope you learned something and writing all this was not worthless. Please, feel free to check this with anyone who has a good knowledge of English grammar.

And yeah, generally, you don't need to know those things. But when tutoring you will get wiseass kids who think they know better. Then a bunch of grammar comes in handy :)

except for arguing on the internet grammar has little purpose to none. it's funny most people don't realize they've spent too much time learning useless crap when they could've learned the actual language.

Sure, learning the actual language is more important, my French grammar is very bad for example, but I can somewhat express what I want to say.

But if your grammar is bad it does make a big difference. In meetings people often smile behind someone's back if he speaks English words with German grammar (watch that k1llsen interview for reference) And with that smile some respect is lost. Which is a very important thing to have.

It gets even worse if people write a manual or something, there precise grammar and language it highly important. I'm sure you have read manuals where you couldn't understand a thing.


Finally, it certainly is not important to actually know the terms like "gerund", etc. as long as you're doing it right. I've met Americans would didn't know it, yet, of course, know when to use it.
But, when I'm supposed to teach that to others I should better know what it is ;)

And of course there are many bad methods when teaching grammar, and I am certainly no expert, just did it for some time. But at some point you have to tell the kid to say words like "making" or "made" instead of "make".

Wow, really? I never had any probs understanding this guy. It's pretty bad when a native speaker can't fill the gaps, but i don't think Agu is anywhere near that level.

My view might be biased, though, i've spent 2 years in a place where some people made little more sense than Babel Fish during a Turkish hacker attack. This made me near-oblivious to bad grammar, except when manifested in it's most extreme.

I'm glad you stand your ground, but the fact of the matter is that it's the shifting of geopolitical power that dictates which languages survive and which do not. Learning new languages always gives me a new perception, a second view on the culture the language originated from. A priceless experience.

I don't have the time to invest in research, but it would look like this (fact? event? book? post? cba reading the discussion :P) tells us the timeline of olden European tribes and the place of Frisian emergence in Europe. I suggest (suggested/said that so) you keep your knowledge on the subject up to par.
