Okay, this might sound weird but seriously. I can't change the hz to 100 with ccc or ati tray tools but I was able to manually configure it under monitor properties like you usually do.

I never thought of that because I always used ccc or atitray for that purpose.

btw: I'm almost certain that pixel timing is the time the pixel needs to change its colour/light contrast or whatever. And the longer it takes, the more latency in image forming is perceived.

But I ask myself why would the industry implement 120hz if they only need to adjust the pixel timings. I guess you need both, proper hz and a good timing.

Hm, reading around some more I'm considering holding off for now.. since I'm getting a new ATI card (5850) I heard that something is fucked up with those and the 2233RZ, not sure what however.

nothing wrong with my 2233rz.... if you should wait, maybe get a full HD 120hz? That's what I would do. Possibly with LED backlight.

Are you using an ATI card and a 2233RZ, playing Quake? I heard that's where the problem is at, but I'm not sure what.

right now you can't get 120 hz to work on anything but the native resolution with a 2233rz and an ati card. I don't mind playing quake at 1680*1050 too much right now but it would be nice to be able to play in 4:3 and might be a problem if you're planning on playing older games.
However, since scaling is supposed to work just with the same setup on win xp I'd imagine this should get fixed with a new catalyst driver in the near future.
Waiting for a full hd panel might be a good idea (the acer one should be out very shortly), however bear in mind that that one will cost about another 100e more than the 2233rz and that 24 inches might in fact be too big to play games on it. I already have the 2233rz placed all the way back on my desk otherwise I couldn't play comfortably.
The acer one does have the benefit of an added hdmi and vga input and, according to digitalversus, performs even a bit better than the 2233rz (which is perfectly fine to begin with tbh).

Bigger is always better? Nah. 120hz+125fps is the closest to heaven that you can get. With 160hz tearing is pretty high.

Tearing has nothing to do with refresh rate but with the lack of sync between fps/hz. 120/125 is nearly the same hence theres nearly no tearing. 160/125 isnt.

you can't really sync your refresh rate with your frames per second, can you? I mean there'll always be some 'mismatch'. And I can't say, I have noticed any tearing so far :O

You can sync them, r_swapinterval 1, and tearing disappears completely, but that forces 120fps if youre using 120hz, and 125fps is better than 120fps internally for the engine. So as i said, imo, the best you can get is 125fps/120hz, which gives a little tearing due to the 5fps mismatch, but nothing is perfect, not even the best dm game ever.

Okay, so how about I play with com_maxFPS 160 then?

Make a custom mode with 125 Hz using powerstrip or something and you'll have it. I ran 800x600@125 Hz when I had my CRT. Ez. Anyone saying 120 Hz is the best is a retard unless they include a caveat stating 125 actually is but since it's not straight forward to implement they didn't mention it.

120hz + 120 fps = ultimate smootheness. Has been like that for ages. One of the reasons why the Quake 4 engine failed and they had to change the framelock. (from 60 to 90?! or 100?! not sure 120fps still desired i guess although cs also runs w/ 100fps)

125 fps is better, dont remembr the internals but arQon explained that with 120fps something not desirable happens.

Using ATI and 5700/5800/5900-series + Catalyst 9.12? Well, for some reason catalyst caps the refresh rate to 85hz but you can edit the inf-file and manually add the resolution along with the refresh rate your CRT supports.

I managed to get my CRT to work @ 120hz by doing this:

"Spyre gave a suggestion that worked for me with 5850, Catalyst 9.12 hotfix and XP SP3.

This is how I got my frequencies back :

1) Uncompress the drivers in a folder.

2) Locate a file called cx_92915.inf

3) Inside that file locate a section named: [ati2mtag_Evergreen_SoftwareDeviceSettings]

4) Scroll down until you find this part..

HKR,, DALNonStandardModesBCD3, %REG_BINARY%,18,56,13,92,00,00,00,00

Now you have to add 8 sequences of 2 digit numbers for every resolution/frequency you need.

First couple is the horizontal resolution, the second is the vertical resolution, third is (I suppose) color bitplanes and fourth is the refresh rate.

For example, if you want 800x600 at 120 hz and a 1024 x 768 at 100 hz you will add this pairs..

Obtaining something like that:

Save the modified file in the same directory with the same name (CX_92915.inf)

05) Uninstall the Catalyst drivers you have (Spyre wrote you can modify windows register directly but there are a lot of duplicates, very difficult to spot and modify every couple that way)

06) Reboot. Reinstall Catalyst drivers the usual way, launching setup.exe manually from the directory you created at point 01 (to use the modified *.inf). I choosed a custom installation and installed everything except Catalyst Control Center (it's crap in XP, quite bugged)

07) Reboot as requested.

08) Install Ray Adams' ATI Tray Tools 1.6.9.1464 beta (Spyre: He's the man you need at ATI to learn how to make a decent control panel!)

Now you can set any desktop resolution with the refresh rate you put in the *.inf file.

You can then use Ati Tray Tools "Lock Refresh" function to create a group of custom resolutions with custom refresh rates and finally set the option "refresh rate override" in the 3d section as "same as desktop" to get correct refresh rate in games too."

I'm having the same problem on a Sony G420. While the method on windows 7 forums works, where I removed the 12 pin of a VGA cable, its working well on my desktop only. All my games run at 85hz still and even RivaTuner can't over write it. I have NVIDIA card so has anyone got a similar solution as the ATI drivers already posted. It will be probably better anyway as making your monitor non-PNP screwed a few things for me.

p.s I can make games like Warsow and Quake 3 run at say 800x600@150hz or 1024x768@120hz, but they just copy the desktop settings. So annoyingly I have to change my desktop to 800x600@150hz before I load say Warsow. As I said this is still only ok for games that support consoles. The rest is still 85hz.

you gotta find it first and then modify it for x64 OS though

I have the drivers from Sony (made in 2002) but even the ones Windows 7 install, are still fine as the correct model is displayed. I used Phoenix to extract and edit the EDID, however apart from the refreshrates the rest becomes to complicated for me as I need to enter Horizontal, Vertical range values, Cpl pixels (not sure if thats right), cycles...blablabla. There is default values already so I just leave them intact, but I have feeling they need to be changed to reflect the automatic switch between different ranges.
I'm gonna carry on testing still. Hopefully I can find some solution. The other alternative is to send my EDID and .inf file to the guy who posted the guy so he can edit it, because I can't work out the vga2rgb calculator.

I have some VERY VERY VERY good news for everybody using NVIDIA cards! The latest beta drivers 196.34 has finally fixed the issue with capped refresh rate in Windows 7. The custom resolution is working fine and adding any value for refresh rate will change correspondingly. No more 85hz limit. All games load the maximum supported refresh rate by the monitor at any resolution and I don't need to use RivaTuner to force them either. Simply excellent!

I haven't modified the VGA cable, the EDID is the original but I did change the drivers to Sony from 2002. Not sure if that helps.
