To appreciate Daigo you really need to look back to Super Turbo because that was the last hardcore version of SF. Since then they made the timings easier to bringin the game to a bigger audience.

This demo to me is as close as perfection as you'll get.
And his opponent is not a scrub either.

Yes all the top people are playing SF4, it doesn't mean its the most hardcore version.

Sf4 has A LOT of holes in the gameplay designed to bridge the skill gap between players. Moves are easier to do, timing windows are longer. ST was raw from a time when gamers were used to working hard for their wins.

Someone who can do a combo in SF4 would struggle with the same one in super turbo. ST was a much more precise game which rewarded true skill.

All the elite level players would've mastered the timing regardless of the game. SF4 is where the elite players are despite it being "easier to play".

not entirely true. SF4 is a game of extremes.

while it is easy to play at a basic level, it has a ton of 1-frame links you need to hit accurately to even aspire of being a top player.

the easy execution, large reversal window and big comeback potential (provided by Ultras) just compresses the low and low-mid tiers of players, making it somewhat random for them (hence the bitter conclusion of low-mid players calling the game a "newb" game just because they lose to stupid random stuff that they can't overcome).

with enough experience and matchup knowledge you can break away from that area.

in conclusion skill level in SF4 is heavier compressed at the bottom of the pyramid in comparison with other Street Fighter games with a wider stratification of skill, sacrificing a bit for more accessibility.

Yes SF4 has some very hard things, but for example in super turbo, using ryu, jump in strong kick, ducking medium kick, super fireball.

These are considered basic in SF4, but you try doing them in ST, its far from easy. It's the same sort of motions, but a universal example of how something the same in one game is so much harder in another. A quake example would be the bridge to rail to in quakelive vs q3. Its definitely easier in Quakelive.

Most players who play SF4 are NOT going to rise to the level you talk about, so when talking about this I'm obviosuly going to be talking about it from the perspective of the majority of players.

Also I disagree about ultras, they are often easy to tag onto juggles, play any good balrog/ryu/sagat and you'll get fairly big ultra damage from a juggle.

I play Zangief, I can't tell you how many times I have spent 30-40 seconds taking uncounted risks getting in, chipping damage here and there, working so much harder than my opponent, if I beat my opponent at the start the game rewards him with a big fat ultra, so all that player needs to do is land ONE SINGLE MOVE and tag and ultra onto it and he's done the same damage I have, except he took 10 times less risk, and did it in a fraction of the time, all because he was getting beat. Its not hard to land ultras. Its that baby sitting/catch me up aspect of the game I dislike, yet applies to most of the playerbase. It might work in mariokart, but not here.

You can't discuss the game through the mindset of .1% of the population who play it because most people never make that investment or get that good.

The bottom line is for 99% of the skill base, they've pulled players skill level together, when its just not.

I wouldn't say consistently, but Shiro and Mago have beaten him quite a few times, probably more than the other way around.

And that's talking about SF4, he's had plenty of people beating him in other games (ST, A2, A3, 3s, CvS2, GG), but he is really that good and probably deserves that "king of fighters" title.

He is/was pretty much untouchable in Vampire Savior (and Hunter) though.
