None of the nations that now act like they're traumatized over the earthquake, engaging in a PR war with each other over who cares the most ever gave a shit about Haiti even though it has been the poorest nation in the western hemisphere for a long time.

The worst part is going to the Bahamas and seeing all the make-shift floats/boats they make to escape and get to the US washed on shore on some deserted islands.

They don't have the same chance that Cuban refugees do with catching the Gulf Stream and getting carried up the coast of Florida. It's really depressing, actually, because you know all the empty/broken-up floats = poor, desperate people drowning at sea.

I want to help too, but I can't afford to give $$. Every time these disasters happen (the tsunami in Samoa, Katrina etc) I think its good if people can do whatever they can, even if the media exploits it like crazy. If you can't afford to give money, give clothes and shoes or something.

I know it seems like the "trendy" thing now to be charitible but I can't describe the feeling of being so spoilt when giving something as small as a dictionary to someone and they are overjoyed. Theres so much that we take for granted :(

This country can't even afford supporting its own people, let alone a country that we haven't paid any attention since we didn't like their government. PR war is right, its all bullshit. If you care enough to do somthing, then you need to be there. Funneling money into a decimated country is money we just don't have to spend. My heart goes out to the people for their loss, though.

And yeah, now all these musicians want to get together and sing for a country. They make more money than the avg american, and they just want to sing? Give me a break. Why don't you give up some of YOUR money, instead of trying to get ours? And I know some have made donations (cough), but ffs....

These politicians aren't giving up their own personal money- they want ours. Lets get congress to approve sending taxpayer money to a country that no one thought twice about (with exception of few) until this. Why aren't the rich politicians sending their own, since their so quick to charge taxpayers for it. It all comes out of our own pockets in the end.

Was just commentating about your foolish comment that those guys from the middle east or Africa should "do something". (Ye, someone from Eritrea who is about starve or to die from HIV while he maybe not even heard about Haiti has the possibility to "do something".)

The people who care the most, they are there providing any help they can. For the rest of us who feel bad and want to help recovering without going there and providing hand to hand aid, there is donation. Hopefully the money reaches the people who care the most and need it the most. You can't knock a musician for using their only talent to help raise money for a cause. This is the best way any human can help another, by using their talent/trade/art. They care enough to help in their own way, and many musicians/artists have donated money themselves. Text messaging has been great in these efforts. 20 million in donations has been risen, much of that through text messaging. Although some people may be stroking their egos and images by donating, one can hope that all the money finds it's way to leading humanitarians.

Geography is a double edged sword, often the most dangerous places to live are also economically/culturally the best places to settle. Once an area has been established, it's hard for me to understand how you can feel no sympathy for people who have been born and raised in a dangerous geographic location. It's not their fault. If you were born in Haiti, I'm sure your greatest priority would not be, I must leave Haiti, my life is in danger because I live on a fault line.

Here in sweden we pay loads of tax and alot goes to contribution already, either we want it or not. Still the help organisations do everything they can do make us feel guilty and send our hard earned cash.
