$24,500 for a female tournament. How pointless, sad and demeaning(for women). But I can see how it's an easy to sell to clueless sponsors.

They also have women's only chess events (and even female titles, WGM instead of GM). One of the arguments was that females are discouraged from attending the hugely men striven enviroment that is chess tournaments, and having female only tournaments attracts more women. Which is partly true but I don't see the correlation to pro gaming (or even chess anymore). Some argue that woman are genetically inferior to men in regards to chess abilities(which is really what they're saying with this tournament in regards to pro-gaming too). This is of course nonsense. But the result is that females are insulated from (real) top competition and in the long run it's harmful to their abilities. And it's sexist and really shouldn't be happening in 2010.

I'm not always in favor of women only tournaments, but in in certain cases it makes sense. To even make it anywhere near the top in chess you need to work full time, something that's not possible without going full pro, which in turn isn't possible without having the required skill level which is not achievable without going full pro. Giving female athletes the chance to go pro without having to break the male mold gives them at least a fighting chance.

This doesn't really apply to esports of course. Here female competition is (mostly) sponsorship related, but hell, so is the male competition. There is no intrinsic value in playing a computer game, players get money because they entertain (or more precise, because through entertainment they provide sponsors with exposure) and nothing else. Might as well complain that pro wrestlers make more money than actual wrestlers.

If having female only competition hurts the brand when it's purely a gimmick is another story worth discussing.

In chess only one woman in history has broken into the top ten list and the segregation between the sexes in chess has a lot to do with that. The only two(sisters Judit and Sarah Polgar) to have really been able to compete with men at top-level chess disparage women's tournaments arguing segregation perpetuates the inequality of performance between men and women.

A prime example of how segregated tournaments fail to increase the number of women in gaming is Qcon 2k5. Ms. Qcon was an official tourney. So few females signed up that the admins were literally walking around the event asking random females if they wanted to play.

I know of two female RTCW/ET players that accepted the offer and played, having little to no experience in Q3.

Who took top 3 in Ms. Qcon? Three players from the same team (g0d).

What happened after? Quakecon dropped Ms. Qcon as an official tourney.

Segregated tournaments do nothing more but encourage the same hand few of female players/teams out there to put forth the little effort required to place high enough over their equally pathetic peers to win money. I'm sorry but that's just the truth.

I wouldn't say the sponsors are clueless, at all.

With the price number for the "open tournaments" for several games you have pretty much assured that people from those communities will watch. If you raise the money for the tournament by $24500 you won't get many additional viewers.

So, there are two options of where to put the extra money.

a) add yet another game, and hope to attract viewers from that community.
b) add a female tournament for a big community you already have adressed with an open tournament, to attract additional viewers.


Keep in mind, that one of the main goals for the organizers if not the most important goal is to attract as much sponsor money as possible.

With a) you will attract more gamers from a specific community.
With b) you will not only attract players from the game's community to keep watching ("lol, look at how bad the girls are") but also guys from other communities ("She's hot, she isn't"). Additionally, there is also a good chance to attract many more female viewers which is always interesting to sponsors.


So, imo, while a female only tournament is quite questionable regarding the level of the competition, it does make a lot of sense to have it for organizers and sponsors. (You Iceland people should know bettter about attracting money ;P)

While in Quake, even if the maps don't change from tournament to tournament, you are never going to be playing exactly the same match, as the interaction with your opponent will differ from opponent to opponent.

Regarding TM:ESWC, at least in the past they had map packs for the ESWC events, but I don't know when they were available to the players, nor do I know if they will have a pack for this event.

there are always new maps for every tournament, which keeps the game fresh. as for the whole "you only memorize button presses", i mean sure, you gotta train the maps so you know how to drive them, but you still have to try to drive faster than your opponent(s), which isn't easy when you're under a lot of pressure. and the game is built so that it's always possible to make a comeback, as long as you don't make too much mistakes. anyway it's pointless to compare the games since they are of completely different genres.

How is it even going to work with QL? Asssuming this is the same format as previous ESWC's, it's like 50 countries around the world hosting lan tourneys with the winners heading to the finals. Yet to host QL on lan requires all sorts of ID administration bullshit and some competent IT people on the other side too, and still requires internet even on LAN. This is just going to cause a huge amount of problems for half the countries involved in ESWC unless ID comes up with something. And judging from their effectiveness in dealing with all the QL problems, that's not happening.

Easy to say why there is no SC...they would crown a "world champion" which would be beaten by any second league player in Korea, because you dont really expect the pro team player to come over for such an event, where they dont even know IF they get payed in the end...

And even if the do get paid, it won't be more than pocket money.
