never heard of the first and second place players

having many issues come up and unfortunately quite a few players had to leave disappointed in the organization.

what happened?

Apparently we didn't make it clear enough that there was a difference between the "Sign Up" phase and the "Check In" phase.

Some players missed the check in phase entirely despite knowing about it for whatever reason, we're not sure if it's player-error, admin-error, or a web software-error.

The previous two things resulted in a few people not getting put into the bracket, when by all rights they should have, and for me and a few of my admin team to get quite a few rather caustic PM's.

We started late enough that we ended up having the finals at like 4:00am.

We weren't too familiar with how to make seeds publicly viewable with tourney.cc software, and apparently you can't, and had to jury-rig a system out to determine who was "highseed" for map decisions.

Then there was a time when the admin team had to make a call on the Gillz vs. dCoy game.

I didn't manage to get QL.tv to cover the tournament, and while the independent broadcaster we got was good and entertaining, there were a good few issues with the whole thing.

Still, I remember people using "gg" in a different meaning like when someone misses 5 rails and says "gg" but he doesn't mean "I resign" he just means "i'm super raged for this particular moment". Also many people bind gg which allows for accidentally hitting that key. If you wanna prematurely resign your game just go to spec or disconnect imo - I never stop playing when someone says gg unless he too has really, you know, stopped playing. I have no idea what exactly happened in this Gillz game though.

In any case if you were to forfeit someone for simply saying gg there has to be a very clear tournament rule to back that decision up.

I don't agree, when someone says "gg" specially when it's close I lose focus on the timing/game, not that I don't keep playing just that more relaxed because my opponent already gave up.

i dont know what the situation here was but saying gg during a game sucks bigtime if you still play for real afterwards. i had it a few times that i made an important frag like 30secs before the end and someone writes gg. i would then chat back with something like "yeah gg, was a bit lucky :D" and get fragged while i stand still just to lose the game by getting spawnfragged another time. if you say gg in a situation like that, you forfeit the game imho.

he caused drama by beating zero4 a couple times as he was getting in shape for eswc08. they were here.

he has the drive, but his real life job is such that he does not have internet access for a good part of they year, so you will see him play for a few months and then disappear and such and such repeat.

Isn't he west coast too? They're kind of cut off from the rest of the country, and I don't think there's been a lot of well known west players since like 2001.

I'll explain what happened.

The final map was ZTN, I had beaten him on his map pick (T9) and he beat me for my pick (DM13).

On ZTN for the final minute, I was leading by one frag. Around 9:40 he had made his final push on me, unfortunately did not succeed, as I fragged him, taking a two lead advantage. He then said 'gg', at which I took a nice breath, calmed down, and (I think) said 'gg' back. At this point I believe he rushed me with the weapon he had dropped when last fragged, kill me, then proceeded to kill me again by spawn death, tying the game up right at 9:59, putting it into OT. At that point I was left (and let me put a lot of emphasis on this) EXTREMELY frustrated, seeing how he had admitted to throwing in the towel.

The reason I say he threw in the towel, is because that's how 'GG' has been represented in the Quake community for over ten years. In that situation, every player admits defeat and says 'GG' as a sign of "I tried my best, it's over, good game". Most players here can agree on that. People who don't understand that are people who haven't played the game on a competitive or serious level, and have no emotion for the game. When you're a player, GG means a lot. When you're not, it means nothing. The reason I say this is because this is what probably influenced the admins decision to give him the win, and not me.

Now, back to the game, yes it did go into OT, and I'm sure people are thinking "Well why didn't you just keep playing and beat him". Well, I did, but like I said before, when you're left with that amount of frustration, you lose a lot of concentration. I'll be blunt, you have no idea what it's like unless you've been in the same situation, so don't bother telling me I need to 'grow up' or 'handle it differently'. Unless you've been there before, you dont' know. You can't just learn emotion without experiencing it. You can't fully understand things like love without living that experience first. It's the same with the emotion of frustration. You need to be in the moment to completely understand what is being felt.

People have different personalities, people get frustrated more easily than others, people handle things differently. It's built into them, you can't truly control emotion.

Regardless, at that point it went into three OT's, and he had fragged me, I was unable to tie it up again.

I will comment on something else though (that I think is somewhat important). Before the match, he asked to have a friend spectate in the game. It doesn't matter who I play, I say no. For people I don't know well personally, I just assume worst possible situation (ghosting) so I don't even bother letting them. I refuse to play a game, only to lose with the thought that his friend COULD of been ghosting. It's not a healthy way to play or complete a game. After that I had picked my map (DM13), but he didn't pick his. AMP had joined the server and I had asked why he didn't pick the map. He said that "I'll pick the map after I see how this plays out". I told him flat out no, and told him to pick the map.

The reason I say this is because this is a perfect example of a player who lacks confidence (From means they perceive themselves) in their own game. Instead of him playing out the game normally, he has to find every trick and loophole in order to secure a win.

Play your best, work on your flaws, fix your mistakes, and try harder the next time. Stop trying to get wins by means that are NOT in gameplay. Stop trying to find ways around the rules to get the results you want. Start having confidence in your game, and start playing with sportsmanship.

Your opponent was clearly an idiot, but unless the tournament rules specifically state that gg means forfeit the admin made the correct call. It's not like "gg = forfeit" is standard for tournaments and it wasn't in Q3. It's shitty and I get what you're saying but on the other hand you were reckless to stop playing with only one frags difference without seeing your opponent idle with chat box.

To sum up the admin decision as best I can, and why we made the decision we did:

If I or any other admin wanted proof that the game even happened, most likely we would either check screenshots or the QL box scores.

The game itself couldn't care less if someone said "gg" in text. All the game knows is the scores when the timer ends. If a player throws in the towel, someone has to take the initiative to stop the timer there. Either make him go spectate/disconnect, do it yourself (provided: make sure you have proof that he did in fact concede defeat before you leave), or keep playing until times runs out.

I and the rest of the Quake America staff know full well what typing "gg" means in the community, we've all been Quake players long enough (myself probably the least, but still long enough) to be completely aware. However, we can't just take a player's word for it that, "Oh, he said 'gg', he threw in the towel there and I stopped trying." If I want proof that the game was, in fact, completely and irrevocably in your favor, I have to look at a screenshot or box score.

tl;dr: We can't care about what players' tell us about a game's results. We can only officially care about what the game itself will tell us (ever wonder why you're required to keep demos and screenshots for just about any tournament?)

This is my biggest problem with what you said. So, what goes for cheating? If someone cheats, you say you only have the scoreboard to go by? Or are the double standards for these tournaments that I'm not understanding correctly.

My reasoning for NOT picking my map pick was a simple matter of me being cocky. I don't know you so I'll just beat you on your map and play mine. Sadly my ANTI-ALIASING screwed up on t9 so I was forced to play with a little delay. That being said I'd like to say the ZTN match shouldn't have been played in the first place. I was frustrated going into the game b/c I know I should have won 2-0. When I said GG i was at a great frustration thinking "How the hell did I let this get into a 3rd map anyway?"

But let's all be honest here. Who cares? If you're up by 2 with 20 seconds left in the game and almost a full stack, then shouldn't you be able to defend what ever I throw at you coming from a spawn with a plasma gun? Seriously?

Now lets say that dcoys gfx were causing him to play with a delay and he was losing because of it and 2 minutes into the game he spectates and asked to replay it. do you think gillz would give him that rm? At one point in the tournament I was in the losers bracket vs Rey. I lost the first map on dm6, won the second map on ca2 and it was time to start tossing maps. we tossed maps until we were left with t4 a map I knew before hand rey had no intention of playing. before we had played our first match rey complained about not enjoying ca2 or t4 and wanted them removed from nextweeks tournament. I felt I could beat rey on t4 based on my experience on the map and railwhoreness but I agreed with the admins to let us retoss. We ended up playing ztn and I lost by 3 frags in a very close game. Rey went on to win the tournament, but did anyone bring up this act of sportsmanship? the point im getting at is, when you do something that is right, no one cares, but when you do something that is wrong no one forgets it. I could of easily said NO WAY REY IM GOING TO WIPE THAT ASS ON TOURNEY4 and by the tournament rules I had that right.

In that scenario, the other person clearly left himself vulnerable because he was going to shake his hand. In the match that happened vs Gillz, he was still running around and even managed to get a few health bubbles.

Here let me tell you what it means:

"gg" stand for "good game". Between players who actually have some sort of manner, this is said by the loser first and the winner achnowledges it and himself then says "gg".
Because, if the winner says if first it does make him look like a cocky idiot, who tells his opponent that he played well, despite losing.

So, since the loser generally says "gg" first, one can draw a conclusion. The player who says it first in a game must be the one who lost it, or when it is still going on, will lose it. Saying "gg" during a game, therefore, means that the person has accepted his loss.
But of course, this is only true for people with some standards and not for kids as you made so very, very clear.

No, go on deny this and that, and claim how all that does apply to you.

I'm done talking about this subject. You play by the rules and you play till the game is over.

By the time dcoy and gillz had started playing their match everyone knew the password to the servers, so even if you wanted people to not join they still knew the passwords because there was only 2 different passwords. This was not dcoys fault at all and I was also on ventrilo with dcoy the entire tournament even though i wasnt in the game vs gillz i know dcoy wasnt ghosting.

Also I had a player in the tournament say GG at the 8 minute mark or so while I was up 2 frags and I kept playing it out like he had not said it because everyone knows GG in a tournament does not mean shit especially if you dont know the rules. If you did not read on the tournament website that GG means game over u win why didnt you keep playing?

Dcoy is a great quakelive player and gillz u just come off as a sore loser, at any time in the game u could of told amp to kick the spectators, or refuse to start the game till he played his map, but u gave him every oppurtunity to do what he did. You only have yourself to blame bro.

So none of the nerds on here have ever played a sport in real life? You play till the game is over, not until you think it's over.

I participated in tournaments on a small level for football, baseball, volleyball and tennis. It didn't happen very often but when a player/team said the game is over then they stood by it.

I also played chess and chinese chess in tournaments. Whenever someone extends a hand and says "I give up" the match is over. You don't have to play until checkmate. It's often simply a waste of time.
And when people say they give up, they really do, they don't make a move after you left and left your time run out.

But hey, maybe that there is a cultural difference, maybe in your world words and manners don't mean anything.

No, in any other game, a concession of defeat is followed by a immediate end of play and scorekeeping, either that or players both stop playing and just let time run as is (American Football).

The play did not end when dCoy typed "GG", the timer was still running and the scoreboard was still active. The more I read this thread, the more I find it ridiculous that players can claim that typing "gg" is a formal concession of defeat. If it is, then it must be followed by the second step, the ending of actual play and scorekeeping. I personally cannot see how this isn't completely obvious, and thus why I'm not adding a clause to the Quake America rules covering "how to concede defeat."
