The thing is, Sonic Team was going to close it's doors (around time time that Sonic Adventure 2 went to Gamecube), and another company opted to buy the brand. I don't think they had a single person from the original team, and the games really show it.

I wish they'd just let Sonic die instead of trampling on our childhood. ='(

I think a sequel to Sonic 3 (Or S&K in North America) is the best they could ever do for the fans. If this doesn't work, or they fuck it up somehow, then yes, shut them down. =)

No, they were made as one game then split in two as the game couldn't fit on one cartridge.

That's why S&K has the Sonic 3 cart slot in it.

During development of Sonic 3 it became painfully obvious it wouldn't fit on one cartridge so they split it in half and made them alongside each other, they shipped Sonic 3 and developed the "lock-on" cartridge system for S&K and released it a bit later.

I remember downloading a Japanese ROM of it, and when I beat the final boss for sonic 3, it just immediately went into the first level of S&K.

The Sonic Rush series was probably as good as modern 2D Sonic is going to get (good, but not great). I doubt Sonic 4 tops that.

The old Sonic games haven't aged as well as other platformers, making a good traditional non-gimmicky sidescroller doesn't look like an easy task these days, not even Nintendo could get it right the first time they tried resurrecting 2D Mario.

Sonic Advance 2 and 3 were actually REALLY good 2D Sonic games for the Gameboy Advance. I'd try them (especially 2), they're the only good Sonic games to come in a long time.

Oh yes, I played them. Again, they were good enough, I guess, but not great.


Speaking of old school 2D platformers for current gen platforms:
God tier: NSMB Wii
Top tier: Yoshi's Island DS, Mega Man 9, A Boy and his Blob (it's more of a puzzle game though)
Mid tier: Sonic Rush, NSMB DS
Low tier: NDS/PSP Mega Man, Kirby Squeak Squad (Canvas Course is nice, but it's far from a traditional platformer)
Shit tier: crappy NDS remakes (New Zealand , Rainbow Islands)

Sonic never worked in 3d. The Sonic Adventures on the Dreamcast are about as good as 3d Sonic gets. Sonic belongs in 2d and even though this looks a Sonic Team copy of the New Super Mario Bros. "2.5d" style (not a bad thing), I think they're on the right track for pleasing their fans.

I am looking forward to this. I think the 2d Mega Drive Sonics are awesome and I still play them now (Sonic CD is also awesome).

Sonic Adventure felt like it was in the spirit of the original Sonic games, at least. It was just ruined by the "PLAY THE SHORT GAME 10 TIMES AS LESS INTERESTING CHARACTERS" mechanic. Sonic Adventure 2 was fun, but stopped feeling like Sonic.

If you want to play a real sonic game that many of you will have never played, do yourself a favour and play Sonic CD released on the Sega/Mega CD.

Its straight out of 1993 and is basically sonic 2.5, not as good as 2, but better than 3 and a worthy version.

Its kinda sad so many "sonic fans" don't even know about this game. I actually thought sonic was going downhill around the time of sonic and knuckles + 3.

1+2 are fucking golden. I had so many arguments in school with super nintendo owners though. It was only when I finally got hooked on Mariokart and Sf2 did I shut up.

But definitely the best gays in gaming. I kinda feel sorry for younger gamers who missed out on being kid back then.

That's because no one could afford a Mega CD add-on; Sega with their stupid hardware ideas. But yes Sonic CD is arguably the best Sonic game.

Buying a MegaCD and Sonic CD is going to cost you about 100 pounds. Collectable stuff ain't cheap. But it's worth playing it on original hardware - nothing beats that. :-)

Mega CD was THE hardest console I ever had to earn.
Was a lot of fun playing FMV games while everyone else at school was playing sprite based games, no matter how bad the gameplay way. It could also do the ONE THING snes owners had over sega users. Mode 7!



As for Sonic CD, I'm sure you can get it on an emulator like Gens32 or something.

I like how they kept his whole "the feet are so fast they spin around like wheels" look that they dropped for Sonic Adventure etc.

To be fair, if you go and play Sonic 1+2 now they're pretty terrible, I think they benefited greatly from the whole novelty of being able to go so fast and the "attitude" of the character (Aesthetics > Mechanics!).

If you see a kid play grand piano, he might not be the best in the world, but when you factor in he's only 8-9 its a lot easier to appreciate what he's doing and how good he is.

For me its the same with old game games, and the old games from the 90's the hardware limitations, etc, are just a million miles ahead of what you get today.Come on, you have to admit in the days of the 3D0, jaguar, dreamcast were far better, you could kinda see where things were going. Today its so easy, everyone can do proper 3D with 10 billion bit precision and all that bollocks.

And when it got to 3D, all that happened was textures got bigger, shadows got sharper, polycount got higher, lighting became more real and the sad thing is that's all that is happening.
There is no other big dimension, though this stereoscopic thing could be neat.

I disagree. The Sonic 16bit games aren't particularly deep or complicated but they definitely have a special something about them, let's just call it a 'charisma' of some type.

I think its safe to say Sega died with the Dreamcst, which is IMO the last great console ever made.
