Its a faster display then the VX2268WM. Plus a higher resolution (1080p, say hello to clone mode with the HDTV).

I'm sure the Xbox should work with it. But why is 16:9 too wide for you? afaik all the XBOX games are 16:9

since it's 24¨ i was thinking to use it with my xbox/wii too, but it's primary use would be regular (browsing [which is terrible on 16:9], word [maybe i could turn it upside down lol], etc) + pc gaming, which includes quake/fast paced games (even if I've not been playing it lately because qlive got monotonous) and those are not good on that type of screen

Because horizontal space increase beyond a certain ratio is useless without vertical increase. Also, golden rectangle. Computer monitor is an entirely different device then a television.... I guess I can just say 1200 of height is the minimal that I need, and there is no 1200p.

Perfect scaling. When you play and old game at 800x600 you'll scale 2x to 1600x1200 with black borders on the sides making the image 1920x1200. Playing 4:3 games on a x1080 or x1050 never quite gets you a proper resolution so you have to pick some 1280x960 :( Obviously these are minor things.

well a widescreen view is more natural to the eye because your eyes are obviously placed next to eachother on a horizontal plane, making your you horizontal field of vision larger than your vertical fov.

Yes, our vision is panoramic (not because of the eyes, horizon first, eyes second) and thus that is how we should perceive a single image, but saying that specifically "a widescreen monitor is the logical step" is completely ignoring the fact that a monitor is used to show multiple windows, stacks of text, and a multitude of other things. A wide-screen TV is one thing, cellphones, book pages, monitors are a totally different thing.

It's really ugly, strange size, missing 1920 x 1200... I don't think this is the messiah we have been looking for. Close though.

is it possible to use 2 (or more) lcd screens, one with 120hz on custom resolution with gpu scaling (800x600 for example) and the other one with 60 on native res?
That is to get one gaming monitor and the other just a regular one, and gpu scaling for using 800x600 (non-native resolution) with 120hz and also not having ugly looking image

I got my Acer GD245HQ today.

Input lag is very noticable. Viewing angles are terrible.
There's much less ghosting and tearing than on 60Hz TFT's, but it's still noticable.
It makes some disgusting whining/buzzing noises depending on what's on the screen. Changing the brightness doesn't fix this.

All resolutions work @ 120Hz.
With help of http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/7947-for...rates.html I have made a custom .inf.
This .inf will change the monitor's native res to 1920x1080 @ 120Hz, so that you can let your graphics card scale any resolution to 1920x1080 @ 120Hz.
You can also let the monitor do the scaling.
The .inf forces 120Hz for 1024 x 768, 1280 x 720, 1280 x 800, 1440 x 900, 1600 x 900, 1680 x 1050.
Use at your own risk. I only tested it on the latest ATI drivers in Vista. If it doesn't work, just boot into safe mode and choose 'rollback driver'.

Man, i think its great. Good colors for a TN and with color overdrive off its good looking. I dont get the buzzing alot, sometimes though. I couldnt go back to 60Hz. Ill give it 4 out of 5 stars :)!

Can you tell us more about the input lag - are you comparing to a CRT or other TFTs? Not too worried about viewing angles as I'd be sat in front of it, but the input lag is pretty inportant as far as I'm concerned... The buzzing seems kinda no good either - sure you haven't got a dodgy panel?

I am very picky about the buzzing, but it's bearable. The worst buzzing happens when the mplayerc controls are visible (static horizontal black lines followed by grey followed by black). It goes away when the video is full screen.

The BenQ died, so I'll live with this Acer until better ones come on the market.

I would say the input lag feels like 16-33ms. It gets worse at 60Hz.

This is one of the rare all negative reviews I have seen of this monitor. I have just bought one, and as I already have a Samsung 2233RZ I will do some input lag tests.

I'm just hoping you're either very picky or you just had a faulty set :)

if i understand you correctly maybe the fact that you rely on gpu scaling is the reason for the input lag you experience?

Of course not. Scaling by driver actually causes much less input lag than scaling by monitor.
And in the best possible case, 1920x1080@120Hz on the desktop, the input lag is very noticable by moving the mouse cursor.

+ it's kinda useless to compare them with each other since to do that you need their native resolutions in clone mode(interpolation in non-native also causes lag) which isnt even possible to do i guess, so the only way is comparing each with a CRT in a proper way

Responsiveness: record breaking

As you might know, we prefer to examine the responsivess of a monitor by counting the number of frames of ghosting, those traces that take too long to disappear and end up on top of images that are currently on show, rather than in milliseconds. That's because you can't really compare figures for response time from one display technology to another. Even on two typical 2 ms TN monitors, the results aren't identical. Here's an idea of how the different technologies stand up:

* 5 ms TN: 1.1 colour frame, 0.5 transparent frames (for example: Iiyama Prolite E2208HDS)

* 6 ms e-IPS: 0.4 colour frames, 0.35 transparent frames (for example: Dell 2209WA)
* Average 2 ms TN: 0.8 colour frames, 0.5 transparent frames (for example: Samsung T220)
* 8 ms C-PVA 8: 0.95 colour frames, 0.2 transparent frames (for example: Samsung F2380)
* The best 2 ms TN 2 (not including 120 Hz): 0.35 colour frames, 0.5 transparent frames (the Samsung 2253BW).

And as we hoped, the GD245HQ did better than all of them.

Even more surprisingly, it also beats the two 120 Hz that are already available. The gap isn't huge, with just half a frame less of ghosting in each case, but it's enough to displace the VX2268wm from the podium, which itself had lead the 2233rz by a similar margin. The icing on the cake is that the input lag is on average only a single frame: taken together, these two scores make this monitor any gamer's new best friend.
