It's pretty obvious you're not interested in knowing why I think either are overrated, bearing in mind you repeatedly keep wording it so that I claim to know exactly how overrated they are as opposed to it being my opinion.

For the benefit of others though:

There's a big difference amongst players who place top 3. Cooller or cypher can place anywhere in the top 3 at most events, while when fox or Jibo place top 3 in a highly competitive event it is always going to be in the 3rd spot of those three. That's the best case scenario at most times in their careers whereas for cypher or Cooller that would be a worst case scenario at certain times in theirs.

I think these players' play styles contribute to their being overrated as Jibo can have crazy aim at times, which is always a fan favourite and sways people, while fox can play many styles of player very closely even if he won't win the series or map overall. Jibo and fox on their best day playing their A+ game are not close enough to some of the elite players playing their A+ game to warrant the hype lavished on them as duelers IMO.

On the other hand I've seen a lot of posts which seem to think both are either good enough to be considered amongst the elite or are somehow unlucky and that is what has stopped them getting the same kind of accomplishments. Both have shown themselves incapable of winning highly competitive dueling events in the clutch against top players who are playing their best game.

I don't really have a problem with that. I think they're both good players and entertaining to watch. They're still overrated though and I think when you overrate players unnecessarily it collectively devalues the real brilliance some of the best of all time bring to the table since IMO there is a fairly well defined difference between fox-Jibo and those calibre of players, in dueling.

I think you're putting too much emphasis on specific matchup peculiarities.

If fox beats rapha in the playoffs someone else is going to beat fox later in the playoffs and win the event. Meanwhile if rapha beats fox in that matchup he then may very likely go on to beat the player who won in the other scenario for the title. That difference is pretty much the point I've been attempting to make.

In 2007 the Dallas Mavericks were the best team in the NBA during the regular season but lost to the 8th (and thus bottom) seeded team in the West, the Golden State Warriors, in the first round of the playoffs due to how poorly they matched up against that one specific opponent. Yet GSW then got beaten fairly comprehensively by Utah in the next round, meanwhile Dallas would have been much more competitive and may well have even won that second round series had they made it there.

fox and Jibo are better than GSW ever were in proportion but the example is extreme intentionally to highlight the concept at hand.

I agree on your assessment of rapha's and foxes chances in relation to wining the tournament.

But I disagree on the conclusion. I think it's down to fox playing bad under high pressure and/or late in a tournament.

If there was no pressure at all, I think fox is way up there with the best. With lots of pressure he loses in comparison. So what it boils down to, is how much importance you put on the ability to play under pressure and therefore succeed in finals.

I think it's very clear that you put more emphasis on it than I do.

fox for example does not really have what it takes to be a duel champion, i guess after all those years, that is clear. but still he is an awesome player who can beat almost anyone when he plays strong (like when he beat rapha on ztn in dubai) and judging from what we could expect in terms of tournament results at this moment, i guess the 6th place he got in the tek-9 ranking is definitely the right region.

I kinda agree with you about both, specifically Stermy because he hasn't won anything major in the recent QL tourneys. Fox atleast has beating-Rapha feather on his hat.

don't you think you are missing the "beat Cypher at dreamhack"-feather for stermy?

cypher plays one of the most variable styles of Quake Live out there IMO in that if his confidence or aim are not where they need to be suddenly his style can outright hurt him and he doesn't seem able to switch over to a more defensive attrition-based style of play with a small lead.

When he was raping everyone in Quake 3 he was running around maps like he had no fear of being killed at any time and could just turn it up to 11 anytime he felt like it and outaim/outmove/outskill his opponent, which is all made possible with his brilliant spiderman-esque extra game sense. When that sense isn't tingling when it should be or is a little out of synch all you have to do is throw in a missed shot here or there or a moment of hesitation and I think you can see him lose to a pretty decent handful of people.

Yes he does play like that, dropping maps quite often. But that doesn't stop him from placing well at/winning quite a lot of tournaments.

So, I still think stermy winning against him is a notable achievement.

That's the whole point becks.Stermy is not consistent and neither is fox. They've won these kind of games that shook everyone and reminded everyone not to write them off as 'easy'. They're brilliant players otherwise and have everything it takes to make it to the top 3 but lack consistency.

but hardly anyone expects fox or stermy to make Top3 in a tournament when most of the best players are around. And not too many think they will make Top5, from what I have seen.
