I love Fox, but seriously... I don't know how mouz sponsor him, but if I was giving him money to attend events and got told he only played 5 matches before an event I'd be pretty pissed off.

I guess sponsors don't care about results? Just about sending some kids to play their favorite videos games in far-off countries around the world?

It seems like every QL player is like, "fuck my sponsors... I don't care about winning" lately.

No wonder Quake tournaments are in the gutters. No one takes it seriously, not the players and especially not the sponsors.

Well I guess some sponsors see it as even if a player doesn't even win that much, if the support for him is so strong then they're a good addition.

exactly. They want their logos displayed on the shirts of whoever is being watched the most. If that doesn't line up with who's winning the most then so be it. They (sponsors) are obviously not doing it for the prize money, as it's usually the same companies sponsoring the events that are sponsoring the players.

cooller and fox are obviously very good choices, guess they're lucky in that respect, but I don't know, guess i'd just be pissed =)

two friends of mine do taekwondo on an international level and they actually relax 2 weeks or so before big events, and they are mega-serious about it

How does that work out for them? I know there are different practice routines and so on... Taking some time to relax makes sense, but two weeks sounds like a lot.

well they are coached by the best people, so i'm guessing they're doing the absolute best thing

it might also have to do with the fact that a minor injury/muscle damage is common during normal training

i'll ask them in more detail..

never tried other clients than original wc3, but hon's interface and netcode alone rape wc3 so bad it's not even funny :-E and gameplay is subject to change I guess

no orb effects.. noob-friendly, best teams still playing dota, I just want to get a bit better before/if everyone switches I will switch, just follow the flow :P I'm lowskilled in dota anyways :) just want to get better first.

No orb effects? It has all the orb effects DotA has. With the difference that they stack if they aren't of the same category (eg two life steals) and with exception of some hero skills like Archna's slow.

how is hon noobfriendly? last time i checked it was .. well, not noob-friendly :p

i second that, i played once dota and had no clue about the game, then i ve seen some replay of hon, tested it, and i surely think for real beginners it is not easy because of the many heroes, items, and takes time to master since probably most ppl palyed dota before and know to a degree what to do :)

dota is light years ahead of hon

all the stuff around the game is awesome, matchmaking, easy button configuration, stats and reconnect feature makes every game decent not every third like in dota (garena, haven't tried dota-league and whatnot).

I just don't like the look or the "feel" of the game but I admit it's probably just a matter of habit. The biggest problem for me is getting my friends to switch or at least try it

the private messenger keeps bugging out, constantly crashes after games, retarded unit pathing and broken trees. not to mention S2 not being able to get the balance right and they constantly over power their own heroes

Don't know about HoN but as for dota, the "overpowered" status depends on your items and strategies, technically you can play well with any item if you know the time and the usage. Same goes for heroes.

Kind of a ridiculous attitude fox got, I know he is a good player and all that, but if you play for a team like mousesports you shouldn't slack like he does.

In fairness Mouzsports must be pretty ignorant to sponsor a player who doesn't care much about practicing or winning. Getting paid to play a computer game and.. and not bothering.. well, it speaks for itself.

on the other hand, if tdm in QL does pick up in the future having fox now might prove very valuable.

that you don't have to continually hyperpractise to stay up to date when you're as oldschool as fox and that pure state of mind can play such a big role after this amount of time is great news..

also, i think everyone wants to see fox win <3 and it would be awesome if this happened just when he was most fearless and relaxed about it :D

I agree with him completely about practicing. Once you know the game, and have played it for years there isn't much you will discover from practice, other than a psychological center. However, that center is oft achieved through success and comfort elsewhere in your life. So I think there is a minimum and maximum amount of practice that is good for each individual. In his case, he's so well versed he needs only play a game or two a week to maintain his abilities. Some people require a higher minimum amount of practice to get into their mental comfort zone, sort of a "I've been playing and practicing enough to win this event" mentality. I think cooller falls into this category while czm and zero4 are definitely in the same camp as fox.

It's interesting to see some players who just never find their comfortable mental zone, even though they definitely have the skill to compete and win matches at the highest skill level. If you look at chance, for some odd reason he always gives cooller the tightest games, maybe the perceived skill gap in chance's mind provides him with incentive to play to the best of his ability. dkt is another player who could definitely pull upsets out, but his mental game has been off the past couple of tournaments it seems. I only know American players personally, so I'm sure you can understand my referencing them lol. I think both of these guys have the skill and knowledge to perform at the highest level, but most of the time their mental game is blocking them, I personally believe they play too much, and that could be a reflection of their self-confidence.

I myself, have difficulty finding consistent mental stability while playing quake. My life is balanced yet chaotic, when I'm playing I often feel the weight of other obstacles in my life bleeding in taking my mind out of the game for entire minutes at a time. I play best when my obligations outside the game are taken care of. Periods of complete freedom are the only times when I can focus in completely. In turn, I go through periods where I will play frequently, then take 3-6 months off completely. 75% of the time I'll play best on my return.

There are always little nuances to be learned through practice. Better strategies, routes, positions for maps; cleaner aiming; a greater understanding of your competition etc. If what you and fox say were true, top Korean Starcraft players would only need to play in league matchs. They play 8-12 hours a day because they would be B-leaguers if they didn't. You don't notice the difference as much with quake because there are only a handful of players who are willing to spend the time and effort needed to obtain an elite level.

If fox actually tried to put in some serious practice, he could potentially be winning events. Of course, that's what he wants us to think. For all we know he could be alias accounting.

That seems to be a response to a train of thought different than what I meant to convey in my post. I didn't say "once you've played the game for a long time you don't need to practice at all."

I was talking about a much broader idea, that once you know the game well enough, what you need to refine the most is your mental state, some people get that from rigorous practice, others get it from balancing out their life outside of the game.

Take Dahang for example. Dahang plays quite a bit of practice games, but he will never force himself to practice more than he needs to. Often he will sit back and watch others practice much more than he himself will play. He balances between overexertion and playing enough to stay consistent. Also take a look at rapha, after dubai he took a long break from quakelive, partially due to hardware issues, but I'm sure he also wanted to feel secure outside the game, being comfortable financially through working a bit. He's reached a level in his game where he doesn't need to play 10 hours a day to maintain his skill and mental edge over the majority of his opponents.

This idea of taking breaks and not overexerting yourself is also present in many artistic professions. It's quite common for a freelance designer/computer artist to take sabbaticals lasting months or even a year. These breaks are what breeds the artists creativity for their next intense period of work. Often the free time will create all the new ideas an artist will need for a full year of work. It's hard to constantly force yourself to be creative, without breaks it's easy to get stuck in a rut with no free time to think about and flesh out new concepts. I can vouch for this as I'm currently attending an intense art school. By the end of two semesters (8 months with three weeks of vacation (usually there is twice as much work assigned over my vacations) mixed in) I'm completely wiped out creatively, and it takes me a few weeks in a vegetative state to recuperate.

In summary, I really think the breaks are what keep people sane and fresh. Practice, practice, practice, seems like a misnomer to me. Practice, rest, practice, rest, practice!

why are you sure the korean way to practice games is the one true way? if you compare their schedules to pro athletes what they do seems kinda crazy.

They're pretty stupid actually, they could probably achieve the same results with much less practice.

You only get like 2, 3, or perhaps 4 hours if you're insanely focused and lucky, of quality "work" done in any given day the rest of the time all the effort you put in will be sub-standard and lack the concentration needed to get optimum results.

8-12 hours of pure practice is just going to result in mental burnout.

The analogy with Starcraft isn't valid here. Starcraft has a way different meta-game that needs to be up-to-date all the time. Once you have the mechanics it doesn't go away. However you need to practice new builds suitable for new maps with new meta-game. The meta-game in Quake simply isn't there in the same way.

I know nothing about starcraft, but when he mentioned the practice schedule I assumed they had a more dynamic map pool driving the need for it. It would be awesome if we had all new maps for each season of quakelive. It would provide a lot of room for new talent.

This pretty much. At the end of the day, I'd say most people practice to keep their reflexes/mental/muscle memory up. It's not like after 5 months of playing the same style they suddenly decide to try something new (and really, there isn't much new to try...)

But yeah, it's weird like that. You can play non-stop for weeks on end and gradually get worse. Take a week or more off, completely avoiding playing and then come back with super l33t skill.

Yeah man, it's really refreshing to come back to something you enjoy after a break. I'm sure fox is having a blast at this tournament.
