Oh my god, she's one of those fucking American, team builder types. I seen it before.
She's a failed psychologist with an interest in games and that makes her Sigmund Freud in the gaming world.
Firstly, she's painting everyone with the same brush, she's using shitty games like RGP's.
You don't need to be a genius to realise that if someone is playing wow/Everquest 8 hours a day there is something wrong about their lives as those games are mostly about the social aspect.
I'm pretty sure when I was kid I didn't play games to escape anything, I was into every sports team, I played them because I was interested in the technology that made them work and I liked the rivalry and competition behind them. I still do!
That's it man, uncle pete wasn't touching me, daddy wasn't beating me. I had a good childhood with no need to "escape" anything. I come online because my reali life friends don't play games.
Does she talk about any games like Quake, or Streetfighter, games which have a very strong competitive following because every time I skipped through I heard caveman comparisons and no real data as to what type of gamers she was referring to.
If I won 10 million pounds tomorrow, I would still play games.
If I was sitting in a villa in the middle of the pacific with the world at my feet, I would still play games and talk shit on the internet.
I'm pretty sure I'm not alone with this too.
Why is it that there is this obsession that if you play games you are running away from something? OK its true for some of you but not all.
if I read books 8 hours a day I'm intelligent.
If I travel the world exploring I'm an explorer.
If I get into science and math I'm a genius.
Yet if I get into something that gave me a career and job for life, I'm escaping something, probably stemmed from the deep seated notion that gamers are dorks. Some are, a lot are not.
I mean fuck dude its so insulting, seriously I would ike to know what games this woman can play and to what degree.
Can she actually take a game like quake or street fighter and appreciate the finer points of the game play, or the rivalry or the competition. Because its those aspects that I look for.
You would think someone in such a position would know all about this shit, but I make a million dollar bet If I stuck my hand up at that event and asked even a basic question about competitive gaming, she would go very quiet or try to fob me off with some half assed psuedo intellectual rant about greek gods playing skittles with planets 10 billion years B.C.
And you wonder why gaming is not taking off with dumb bitches like this getting all the PR?
P.S.
having checked her development record all I see is nothing, oh sorry she did work on this...
"A simulation designed to brainstorm (and potentially avert) the challenges of a post-peak oil future".
Sounds like a fucking blast don't it!
And there was me thinking she had absolutely no concept of what a real, competitive videogame was about or the communities that are built up around them.
By far the dumbest bitch I have heard since Palin.
I think you've got it all wrong. Shes referring to gaming in general and uses WoW as an example.
The reasons for why people game are irrelevent to the point of the talk (how could we take all the time we put into gaming and convert it into solving the world's problems without losing the fun/motivational/personal validation factors).
You're getting caught up in the generalizations and taking them personally. Take all the time you spend on ESR for example - reading/replying to trivial crap (including this). Then imagine all your input actually carrying weight in the real world and making a difference in people's lives for the better rather than it just falling into the void of the cyberspace.
This is the basis of what she is working on and what she is discussing.
