mumble , ts3 , ventrilo are all good

what i'm wondering is this: can you run a mumble server with 2-4 people talking on it and still be able to play ql on the same (relatively new) machine without losing performance, getting lags or whatever? 1mbit upload

you probably always connect to some private server run by your clan or whatever though, right?

why would you need your own if there're thousands of free servers all around the world

won't there be random people connecting all the time? as i said i haven't done this in a long time so don't really know how things work atm.

Just try it already... if you have 1 Mbit/s, you can even dedicate 512kbit/s to torrents or whatever, the other 512kbit/s left will be still more than enough (!) for that kind of thing.

I have a 1.5mbs upload, dedicating any more than 100kbs to utorrent for uploading gives me a higher ping and spikes.

100kbs = most likely kilobytes = not kilobits = why you spike

bad isp or bad router?

I got (min) 3Mbit/s upload speed (medium UPC fiberpower pack...garanted speed 30Mbit/s down and 3Mbit/s upstream)

This is what's running on my home server:
about 80 torrents connected (max. 512 connections, 1Mbit/s )
ftp server,
gtv server

and 1 game server (q3 or cod2 or cod5 or l4d2), tbh; all are running all the time, but since the ports are only open/known by my friends, only 1 is used at a time.

for example: when my friends playing on the voice enabled l4d2 server (takes about 1Mbit/s +-25% since updaterate is increased) I can download anything with 10-20Mbit/s and play q3 without a single little spike or ping increase... and my friends also have rock steady 20-40 ping to my server...

Without the extra download and with a lowered number of torrents, I was doing the very same thing when I only had 1Mbit/s upload speed

This is not the XX century anymore. 1 game and 1 mumble is a "piece of cake" for a 1Mbit/s upstream line.

can't try it for some time, that's why I was asking ;) Also agreed with Six16, I've found that any kind of upload outside of quake will give me spikes very quickly.
However, I realized there's probably plenty of public mumble servers around anyways.
