Just wanted to drop a line or two here saying that this is one of the biggest tragedies that can struck a nation in peacetime. Note that not only the president (which wasn't liked very much, especially among the youth of the nation) died but also the chiefs of the National Bank of Poland, the National Security Bureau, the under-secretary of the Polish parliament, members of parliament, senators, members of the clergy, and all of the chiefs of Polish military branches, not to mention the crew and the security officers that were on board. The amount of the value for the Polish political and social life lost so suddenly is almost unimaginable.

You can see that a tragedy happened everywhere you go here, most people on the streets, on buses, in shops, or on the phone talk only about it. Most of my classes are cancelled (foreign professors understand fully that some people might not want to attend classes today). Needless to say that every big event in the country was cancelled.

I'm not that much of a patriot nor am I an expert on our political life - I also wasn't nearly as struck by the Pope's death, probably since I'm an agnostic - but, personally, the weight of this happening is overwhelming.

And I know that I'll probably be bashed, since ESR is not really a good place to elaborate on these kind of topics but I thought that I should write this, since there will probably be few posts in this topic giving regards to what is really happening in Poland right now.

I remember when the whole of London just stopped during the terrorist bombings in 2005. Mobile lines were dead due to everyone in the city (14 million c: ) checking up on their loved ones who commute near affected areas, no-one even thinking of working on that due to the disturbing news....

A plane crash in itself is a tradegy, one that takes your whole parlamental apparatus with it is truly astonishing. And my jokes might not have shown it, but i actually did feel bad at first while finding out. Then i saw mad's thread, (add the hangover, fatigued and sleep deprived state i'm in) and just sorta ended up OLOLOLing a little bit.

Too be honest, the presidential elections that were supposed to be held this autumn would have probably been won by Bronislaw Komorowski, the current Speaker of the Sejm (which basically means that he is the chief of the lower house of the Polish parliament), as well as a member of the rival party of the late president Kaczynski. Interestingly, it is precisely the Speaker of the Sejm that is now supposed to perform the duties of the president. This means that Komorowski is, at least for now, the acting president. According to the constitution, during 14 days from now, new presidential elections - held not longer than 60 days from today - will have to be announced by Komorowski.

I cringe even now, when the most bitter rivals talk about the ones that died like they were best pals.

IMO, if you lie about the relationship you had with the deceased, you're sullying his memory - the positives and the negatives both are what make up what a man or woman was. If you remove the negative, all you're left with is a saint. And there are no saints.

On that note, i fully expect the remnants of PiS (the party Lech Kaczynski and most of the other people on board belonged to) to use this tragedy to tally up a few more percents of electorate for themselves.

Obviously I can't say for sure, but at least over here 99% of the politicians are on at least good terms, if not actual friends.
