then an athlon 64 x2 is the only option, just make sure you buy it boxed, tray cpus have shorter warranty (in germany, at least) and could have already been used

I assume the phenom should work since its am2+ instead of am3

if you can get a cheap phenom II that would definitly make a difference even without running fraps, and as long as the cpu is in the cpu support list it's gonna work just fine (make a bios update prior to installing the processor, just in case)

of course do am3 cpus work on am2+ boards but it does not work vice versa..

Read tomshardware cpu charts for video encoding. It's usually a very cpu intensive task.

To actually _play_ while fraps'ing without substantial fps drops? Wow, you'd need some kind of system. Maybe a xeon 7500 series with maxed out ram and a top of the line ssd with of course a top of the line video card. It might chop anyways because of the nature of what it's doing...

you don't have to make it a divx on the fly, he could stick with some low-compression codec and then convert it in whatever he wants

if you would try do capture ultra quality crysis for example you definitly need a top notch system but for quake live or trackmania a dual core should do fine (a phenom II x4 would be the best solution anyway, but he said 3 digits for a processor is way too much)

i would go for the athlon, in games cpu speed does not (yet) make such a big difference for dual/quad cores, but in your video encoder it probably does

most games benefit from dual core cpus nowadays and therefore use both cores equally. if you now use some capturing software in the background it can go and use the other 2 cores.
windows movie maker should also be able to use all 4 cores and that should shorten render times after you finalized your movie

so the only reason you said to go for the quad is so that a .avi is created in 20 mins instead of 30-40? O_o

sort of, when we upgraded our nle at work with a second xeon processor (for 4 cores in total) it saved a lot of render time :)

you can assign a threat to a specific cpu core via the windows task manager and if he still has some performance problems he can assign each of the main applications (the game and fraps) two cores. i never tried to capture something with fraps but i have no reason to believe it would not work that way.

if you mean that multicore cpus don't have an edge over singlecores in current games then you're just wrong :)
