games testing is like the lowest job of all.. you get paid shit and have to do repetitive work.. It really isn't that glamorous, not sure why you boast about it ;o)
I'm not boasting about it, I was 18 and it was foot in the door. When the games you tested averaged around 2,5 million sales and you got royalties off that, 20-30k a year was more than possible. It actually paid better than many coder jobs becuase they only got royalties every few years, testers got a constant stream of bonuses becuase they worked on every game.
Isn't funny how talking about non dysfunctional expereinces in games is a problem on a hardcore gaming website-where many had aspirations to do something more than what they did with gaming?
If you note the start of the discussion, you'll also see that once again, I never brought my career up, I think it chips away at some of you though.
Why would you make royalties if you're a tester? You've got no intellectual property in the product. All you would have done is found bugs and glitches.
Also, if you mean mechanical royalties, you'd be getting nowhere near 20k a year.
It does when the average game is selling over 2 million copies and the tester was "working" on several games to the coders one.
It might not be true for every tester, I'm just saying for how it was for me.
But obviously, if you work at a big publisher and you have a constant stream of games going through, you can easily pick up a few k on each game, by the end of the year, it can make up the difference.
Feel like you add to your confusion constantly rather then just responding to what someone says. So lets get it on...
Your so called royalties to games testing is complete bullshit. You don't get this in many jobs unless you are pretty much high up and being a games tester.. sadly... puts you at the bottom of the ladder. Most highly sold games are tested by not 2 or 3 people raking in 33k 5 (or what ever) years ago you did this unbeatable job. but at least 500 or more for larger games.so there is what... about 10 million or is my maths way off?
and yet again in one of our conversations you never read before what someone writes... I was referring to your gamestesting not bafta crap... Your bafta awards are pointless and mean nothing to me.
Again, you're not qualified to talk to me on the related subject, what I say doesn't make sense to you becasue you came into a conversation with someone a lot more expereinced than you thinking you know more. That's always a recipe for disaster. But typical around here.
Tell me, what is you history in gaming? apart from playing them and having an an account on a website? Do you have any expereince, other than what you think? I least I have claims!!
I didn't say my situation was a typical one, I said it was based on my experience which is fair given your reply was to me. You came into this trying to tell me its a crappy low paid job when the irony is I probably pulled a similar amount from it 10 years ago than what you do today despite you being 10 years older and classing it as a profession.
That's not bragging BTW, its just a suitable retort to your attitude.
P.S.
We're talking just over 10 years ago when teams sizes were a lot smaller and development wasn't that over inflated (I admit its crap today-its why I don't do it anymore).
Its quite worrying how confident you are in your words while talking complete nonsense at the same time to someone who was there.
I'm probably not qualified to your idea of "qualified", you are way too narcissistic for anyone to be.
My only connection to gaming other then playing and commenting on here is working on the quakewars cinematic trailers. But believe it or not, I, like many others aren't interested in working in the games industry, however it's common knowledge that a games tester is a low paid job and do not receive royatlies in any cash form.
as for the wage battle? Jesus this reminds me of when i was kid "Mine is better then yours" you make me laugh.. In all honesty you want people to be envious of you, but all you seem to do is make yourself look ridiculous. I can't understand why you seek everyones approval on this site so much, the fact you are trying so hard just makes it even more obvious either a) how much shit you are full of or b) you are sadly lonely..
On a final note just to clarify more of the bullshit you spread.. These bafta awards you claim to have are not directly yours i guess? Or is this part of the royalties you claim you received 10 years ago for testing a computer game.
You call me narcisstic when you're trying to lecture someone whose liased with Nintendo of America and Japan on Quality Assurance, worked in the testing field for several years and telling him he's lying about the way it worked out for him.
Can you be any more deluded?
No, doing a Trailer does not count, so you don't really know shit between the stuff you read and heard.
"however it's common knowledge that a games tester is a low paid job and do not receive royatlies in any cash form".
as for the wage battle? Jesus this reminds me of when i was kid "Mine is better then yours" you make me laugh..
Is this why you said out of the blue....
"Games testing is like the lowest job of all.. you get paid shit and have to do repetitive work."
Do you start to see how utterly stupid you are when I point out the things you say?
In all honesty What cos you were lying the other time? you want people to be envious of you, but all you seem to do is make yourself look ridiculous.
If you checked the thread I said nothing about games until someone else did, then I just replied and then you used that to make out I'm bragging because I pulled you apart so many times, as I have one again, in a factualy way. I respond becaue its a shame the site is over run by people like you. Of course I would look ridicilous to someone like you. Its a good thing, because if you think you're coming acrpss informed to anyone but a dozen or so deluded gaming addicts at the end of the web you're not.
I can't understand why you seek everyones approval on this site so much, the fact you are trying so hard just makes it even more obvious either a) how much shit you are full of or b) you are sadly lonely..
I don't that's why, I'm just responding, why don't you look at the source. Again, you accuse me of that hoping you blow over the specifics, the specifics are, you're full of shit, you think you know what you're talking about despite admitting you have no expereince.
On a final note just to clarify more of the bullshit you spread.. These bafta awards you claim to have are not directly yours i guess? Or is this part of the royalties you claim you received 10 years ago for testing a computer game.
Baftas are not individual award because no single person makes a game. I have been credited on games from a Testing and Design point of view. The only bull shit here is you. You just don't know it yet. Funny how when people successful put up a solid point you try to resort to the DIY guide of psychology :). It doesn't work beyond the deluded.
Its not bragging, its talking about things in an area that make you feel like a waste. That's why you keep trying to elevate me to bragging, if you a make post trying to take the piss, then of course I will rub it in your face but thats fair game. Check the thread and learn to actaully look what is being said.
i'd love to run through your post and depict it but i'll just leave you with this...
Mention of a bafta.
"Candyman didn't get a bafta.
You're one up on em"
Responded with multiple baftas and a games tester who takes trophies.
"I have more than one BAFTA, I lost count how many (may 6-12?), but the rest were just for testing games, so I never mention those.
I never been much into trophies TBH. "
Responded how game testing isn't a great job.
"games testing is like the lowest job of all.. you get paid shit and have to do repetitive work.. It really isn't that glamorous, not sure
why you boast about it ;o)"
Your response with <sarcasm>no Boasting<sarcasm>. (i'll highlight where you boasted)
I'm not boasting about it, I was 18 and it was foot in the door. When the games you tested averaged around 2,5 million sales and you got royalties off that, 20-30k a year was more than possible. It actually paid better than many coder jobs becuase they only got royalties every few years, testers got a constant stream of bonuses becuase they worked on every game.
now if you check through those, look how it goes from a simple comment to you making your response bigger and bigger by bragging about everything you think you have.
As for your great Bafta reasoning, well by gosh i think i have about 25? But believe it or not some of us understand that by merely being a small part of something doesn't claim it to be your Bafta.. And before you depict this with your reasoning which is fucked look at this...
"I have more than one BAFTA, I lost count how many (may 6-12?"
Amusing how you say "mention of bafta-while quoting other things after" without acknowleding the very sarcasm behind it!! Could it be that it would have shown what I said was true. You try so hard don't you? That was the whole thing and you just brushed past it which is why I know you're a biased turd. You had no trouble quoting the rest through!
I didn't read the rest of your shit after that as I daresay its not going to get any better for you.
Bottom line is if you want to be funny and sarcastic about my work I can do it a lot better in return, so the next time you see me "bragging" about my career, why don't you look at the source and see what I'm responding too, though even when I just pointed it out you demonstrated you innability to overlook that.
It's only ever a problem in a demographic of wannbe pro-gamers anyway becaue so many came up short and see everything with green eyes, so its natural you feel like someone is bragging because it puts into perspective how you little you really did. I'm not saying its everyone on the site is like that, but I am saying there are victims on this site and I can imagine how it grates for them, but that's jsut tough shit for them if they interpret it that way, or get funny and then get annoyed because I pull them to pieces.
I would do the same on other topics.
Do yourself this one favour, trolling is one thing, butdon't pretend to know about how the industry works because you read a few websites and then try to lecture me on it or I will pull you up on it.
Why did you change your name from lukeK too?
Was it because the demo I uploaded of nearly beating you in a game you've played for about 5 years longer than I? http://esreality.hexus.net/?a=post&id=1709868
9 years of promode and you scraped a win vs someone who has a fraction of your play time!
15 years of street fighter, a life in game developement, two years of claiming to be top in doom3, being so unbelievably good in q3 you even beat draven when he was new.
WoW is popular. I'm still not sure how popular WoW arena is. I haven't seen any numbers so I might be wrong, but I think quake could bring in just as many viewers.
The best game line up is obviously 1.6 sc2 and quake, and it is a realistic possibility this year so we can hope.
Unfortunately not. WoW tournaments seem to bring in shit loads of dumbasses. I don't think QuakeLive would bring in near the same number.
CS1.6 is probably the most popular fps around today and very popular in Europe (ESL is German based afterall)
SC2 is also very popular in Europe now as well and their streams are getting 10x more viewers then the QuakeLive streams (taking Zotac, HDH etc as an example).
