To make it short, Quake is all about (duel): aim, map knowledge, map control, tactics, timing, movement, dodging, choosing right weapons to certain situations/locations. Maybe I missed something, but that's basically it.

Although SC is a different game, it's an RTS, it has almost all of that mentioned above plus _A LOT_ more. Don't want to go into details, but watching hundreds of Korean games with English commentary to actually get what's going on made me realize that SC is a sick game with enormous skill level and it's still being evolved (yes, Quake also, but not as much).

I really believe SC takes a lot more skill than Quake on a pro level. You have like ten times more things to do in game, but as I said I dont want to go into details. It's just my opinion after all.

I play and watch both games since years, all i can say is that sc is the best rts, quake is the best fps, end of story.

that not cuz there's more strategies and things to memorize at starcraft that starcraft suddenly becomes more difficult than quake. If people like rapha/cypher/cooller could play quake 10-12hours a day, they would probably have almost perfect timings, almost perfect predictions, almost flawless style of play, and ofc constant 45-50%LG & 70-75% rail. And even after like 8 years of 10hours/day of quake they could still improve their overall acc and stuff. Human reflexes and hand/eye coordination are limited you know... Same for the tactics/item strategies etc... Cuz there's basically an infinite amount of different situations in the arena, even if you don't particularly notice it, you would notice it if you could play 10-12hours a day :).

People opinions are all directed by the starcraft hype these days. You know, cuz they see 15k viewers at some day[9] stream they think that starcraft is the most skilled game of all time, cuz they see the korean play at national TV, then sc is fucking so pro serious game. Don't get me wrong, i also think that starcraft is an awesome game and that ofc it's one of the most skilled game ever, but comparing it with quake and saying that it's far ahead than quake in term of skill is simply wrong. It's not even a matter of apple and orange, it's just a matter of fact, quake is the most skilled fps ever, starcraft is the most skilled rts ever.

Oh and btw, if you think that sc is that complex, then again you're wrong, sure if you're discovering it just yet or if you play it just casually and/or only watch korean matches then the game seems like omfg impossible, but trust me that if you play it regurlarly for like 2-3 years then everything becomes more clear and you realize that it's not THAT hard in fact. The only real hard thing is to beat the best players :), so then it's exactly like quake in this case. Also, just try to show quake to some sc "pro", you can be sure that he will be impressed by all the things you have to learn and improve, i mean, straff-jumping, aiming, dodging, items timings, positioning, predictions, cfg, keys binding, map knowledge, sounds, weapon switches, spawns etc etc. For someone playing the game and/or watching the game for years sure it seems obvious and "easy", but for someone else... :)

I think you'll find that exams do matter in the long term. I agree the LAN would be an experience and a worthwhile one, but not at the expense of chucking exams.

If you don't have qualifications you won't get given a chance to go for many many careers out there.

My point is he's 15. I don't know what the qualification tiers are like in Belgium, but in the UK it goes compulsory GCSEs at 16, A levels at 18, then university degrees. On your CV you don't even list your full GCSE grades, as long as you get a C in english and maths no one gives a fuck.

If he's doing the last set of exams he wants to do in normal school then fine, he should concentrate on them. Other wise, if he's smart and it's anything like my country, passing exams he's taking at 15 should be easy and won't affect later life at all.

If you feel he realizes the importance of education, or if he is really good at school, missing a few exams won't make any difference.

But if he is bad or doesn't realize what school is about,, letting him go might be a very bad choice.

I agree for passing exams, and I am sure there are exams where the grade is also important. They just never were for me.

It aren't the exams themselves which are important per sé, it's the moral lessons behind them. Especially so in the teenage years of a persons life.

That is the age at which a person needs to learn what they can and cannot afford to do in later life. And postponing or neglecting a certain annoying task in order to be able to do something more fun is a luxury one simply cannot afford in most "real life" circumstances.

Even if the short-term benefits of said activity probably outweigh those of the more tedious one.

Eg. Boss tells you you need to complete project x on the first sunny day of the year. You say no sorry i'll pass i need to go outside and work on my tan. That just does not work. There will be plenty of chances later on to do the fun stuff.

The truth is in fact quite the opposite, the older you get the less opportunities you'll have to do the "fun" stuff.

Also laying in the sun is on a completely different level as going to a quake LAN tournament . Traveling to a foreign country, meeting and socializing with new people, proving yourself under stress in a highly competitive environment. There is plenty to gain from a trip like that.

Of course he shouldn't make a habit out of it, or have any illusion that it's a viable career path. But jeez, he is only a kid. There will be plenty of opportunities to do the "boring" stuff later.

But i just do not agree overall, who is paying for this indulgence right now should he go? Exactly , his parents. You can't expect them to pay for something that does not make sense from a parental point of view.

What eri is getting at (and I agree with) is that what counts is your disposition towards things that are, as a whole, important. Quake, ultimately, is not important, while education is. Cultivating the attitude that it's okay to slack off to do fun stuff is not sound parenting.

If your parenting has been excellent otherwise, occasionally doing it might not have a big negative impact. On the other hand, if your kid is not responsible to begin with, it's likely a really shitty idea.
