Well he is still a good player if you've seen his vods. The courage players are pretty good, but far from top of the heap. I think his problem had more to do with his inability to adjust to the Korean pro gamer life.

yeah that probably is part of the problem but far from all i guess. his struggling against zerg for example seems a real neck braker

He never player ZvsZ before Korea - he got a lot better in the few months but it was still his worst match up. And he had to play vs a Z almost every time in Courage. :P

It really sucked that he decided to go over there when Z was the FOTM.

Every pro had to win courage once. He was just invited to the team - but that doesn't mean a team can give out progaming licences - only KeSPA can.

KeSPA gives permission for teams to give a certain amount of licenses per year, IdrA was given a license by eSTRO and shortly after he was transfered to CJ Entus.

he begged sdm to give him one iirc.

Sad part is that he probably would have no chance to really get one, especially after his performance in TSL. Even Jaedong failed courage 8 times.

Jaedong made his proleague debut at age 16 so it's hardly a straight comparison.

I was just trying to give an example how even someone who was very talented would have an extremely difficult time passing it.

A bunch of pro gamers forming a boy/girl band would make a better reality show ...

a TV star, it's different; even if you are the best in sc, you can still lose easily if you get cocky, so being very respectful is rather common there

and respect is such a big part of their culture from what I understand, and I think many become timid from it. just by judging from this show, and the other characters besides Hyungjoon, I'd still say he's a more outgoing and less timid than other Koreans might be.

I have to say I agree though. Most of the programmers seem quite shy and try to maintain a dignified appearance most of the time (well, when they're not dancing on stage or something, but even then... :p)

Look at the Korean CS teams though. Very loud and fairly standard to CS: "YEAH" "WOOOOO" "IN YOUR FACE!!!"

hyungjoon is a pop star, he is used to people and attention. the pro-gamers sit inside and play for 14hrs a day, so don't expect them to have any social prowess :E.

I love this!!! I'm a new fan of ss501 too, can't resist the catchy half korean half english scentences. For anyone who is on the fence about watching it, as mentioned above its NOTHING like those shitty US reality shows. Also it gives a good insight on how it really is to be a pro gamer in Korea. These guys are practicing in their office up to 16 hrs a day and they're frightened of their coach. It's totally outta control :D

His personality really blew me away. In the beginning i thought he was a bit of an ass, just "doing it for the show" or something, but 10 mins in you saw how serious and humbled by the gamers he was. Imagine if they tried something like this in the states with the jonas brothers (thats a famous boy band right?) or something, it would be awful!

He could practice from now until the end of eternity 14 hours a day with Jaedong as his Zerg coach, Flash as his Terran coach and Bisu/Stork as his Protoss coach and he not only wouldn't become a pro but he wouldn't get close.

They just said that for the show to add some drama that it was even possible. What they really meant was someone with the required talent to do it COULD best case scenario become pro in that amount of time if trained by other pro gamers.

In fairness, I think the talent for SC mainly comes from the imagination to reinvent what you do (builds etc) and the ability to think ahead and second guess your opponent, but that could come with experience. The whole mechanical element and whatever else is just muscle memory

It's just a case of how fast you can intake all that information, how fast you can learn and remember it (and then subsequently, create new information).

I'd say that Hyung Joon in this case just isn't as good at learning and memorizing the stuff Shark's showing him (or even just realizing/thinking up stuff himself) which is basically the talent element. Someone else might be better which is why I'd agree with the show, that someone with the talent and dedication to learn from the pros, could become a pro quite quickly themselves

Given alot (read: ALOT!) more time he would be better. It's just that in that time, the opposition would have done more and the bar just keeps getting higher. Which is why given all the time in the world, he probably never would be as good as the pros, simply because they would have all the time in the world as well. He would just constantly be catching up because he's a slower learner :P

he's going from being a nationally recognized pop star...to spending 12-14 hours a day grinding away in front of a PC against players who have years of pro experience on him? Pro teams give their players hardly any free time, it's like a slave camp. But he'll probably get a bigger salary regardless of how well he does.

The thing is though, is he actually spending 12 hours a day practicing? It might just be editing, but it seems from watching all the episodes that he messes around and does the occasional practice. Of course, it would be silly to put 12 hours of practice into an episode, but... well yeah :p

The first season was kinda enjoyable, but some scenes were just too long and sometimes it was just way too scripted to be funny. Was a good show, nevertheless.
