I don't think any team besides fnatic is capable of holding the costs of such a travel with 4-5 people... and they're capable of making a ctf team only really because they have atleast 3 quality duel players that can place top3 anytime, and linkin who can do upsets indeed. So they only really send 3-4 duellers and they happen to also be good at ctf...

And I was told calipt ( =((((((((((((((((( ) will not be able to go to quakecon because of personnal matters... and frankly YYT without calipt is not YYT ! (aswell as YYT without any of the trio sol4r-blad3-calipt isnt YYT ;-) )

We've always been wanting to go to Qcon, dating back in the Q3 days. Seeing how 32nd and gunzoids somehow managed to make it over there, back then we had hope of maybe acquiring a sponsor and of course pitch in some of our own money to be able to attend. Sadly Q3 and team-based clans weren't really in high demand for sponsoring...

The same thing is basically happening in QL now. Duel is where the (easy) money is at for most sponsors. Just support one player who can advertise your name for a low cost and you're good to go. If you look at European teams getting sponsored there only really are Fnatic and LLL and both those "teams" are mainly sponsoring their duel players, not the team of 5 or 6 people as a whole. Same thing for us, we joined YYT cause it looked promising with various other actual teams being sponsored (COD 4, CS:S, etc). We joined them as a team but quickly emphasize was placed on calipt as our duel player, which is totally reasonable. Now the YYT-organisation is just a big mess and none of us can really figure out what's up, so getting sponsoring from them is doubtful. Also, with calipt joining mTw for dueling, any real incentive for other organisations to sponsor us is more or less gone.

To sum it up, it's just unlikely for any purely team-based clan like us to come up with the sponsoring or money to be able to make it. Besides calipt, our team consists of relative "no-names" cause we're CTF players which is just a very small ninche of Quake which is mostly ignored by big name tournaments. I just find it sad the emphasize of QL is hugely on duel with basically 5 different duel cups in 1 weekend, while CTF is still regarded as a gametype only suited for public play.

We reformed our old CTF team in 2009 more or less exactly the same way we left it back in 2005, cause we really hoped for a massive tournament revival by QL. Not to take any credit away from the hard-working people who organize, admin and cover the various leagues that actually do exist, I just miss the sort of "glamour" CTF had in Q3 2004 with Eurocups and Barrysworld/Jolt Leagues that felt like they mattered. I'm probably just getting too old for this game and like all "old generation" people start only complaining :D

Yeah it doesn't seem like there's enough support for quakelive TEAMS, and I don't blame the organisations either since 1v1 is and has been lately the main mode to play, we've joined 2 organisations who didn't even put up with their word, anyways doesn't seem like it's going to matter with only qcon being announced as a team tournament.

I kind of get how ESL didn't want to make it just another team tournament for their other games and so organised the ENC; I, however, think that a clan\team cup of that size would've been so much better no matter if TDM, CTF or a mix of those.

I remember when there was Wireplay, Savage, Barrysworld, Jolt and Clanbase, it felt like the scene dried up and disappeared before CTF ever got to Quakecon.
The emphasis has always been on duel. I always found that it was a shame teams like Clan E, IQS, Cx, CN etc even the American teams such as PM weren't around so that we could see them play in a LAN tournament.

those clans glory days are from 1999/2000 when CTF was still developing. IMO, 32nd, aAa and gzd were much better clans.

I never reached the top, but was a good top div2/low div1 player. Awesome gaming times. What happened to those days when the leagues that were run were prestigious while they didn't have any prices?
It's a shame there is no league nowadays that gives me that feeling. Maybe it's simply because I don't play in a team anymore.

I'm a newbie. I didn't know there was COMPETITIVE level play until Doom 3, and even that was an old game by then and Quake 4 had just come out, but I didn't have it yet.
The first match I saw when I discovered that competitive first person shooters existed was a match between Raistlin and Clamp. They were playing Fragging Yard 1v1. After further searches, I discovered TSN Central and their VODs of WSVG matches.
And the rest is history, but technically speaking, aside from fatal1ty and thresh, Clamp was the first "pro" player I'd ever heard of.

Clamp really surprised me in that, was far too late in the game before I even started to understand what to do to recover. good times (even if it was q4 :D)

to this day I still enjoy speccing high level q4 matches more than q3/ql.

speccing wasnt that bad, the competetion was very high during it's run. Playing it was another matter though... atleast in my case.
