As far as I know, even big organizations (like ESWC, CPL) didn't payout. Soon it'll be almost same risky to being a progamer, as working in the building industry. : )

Nice to see proteams organise these huge tournaments, even more so when it's QL along with CS that's getting embraced for the LAN.
Assuming that QL DUEL gets picked up for IEM 5 however, I would, along with some people around here as evident, prefer to see a teamgame (I'm a fan of mixed gametypes instead of just TDM tho) tournament. But then again, it may very well be the 1v1 format's lower cost (1/ 5 or 4 for travel costs and probably a 45/6=7.5 or only a slightly bigger prizepurse) that made it the choice.

You know a lot of QL teams with sponsors that can send them to a LAN? This is I think the main problem of introducing QL team gametypes in big tourney series.

Fnatic is paying for the travel costs right now, so it's about fnatic's expanse right now.

CTF or TDM - the only way to keep Quake Live ALIVE, and interesting for ppl/audience.

We need:

1. Many good admins and smart org,
2. Ppl who will make frag movies of each tourney,
3. Ppl who will make arts for teams/org. leagues/cups,
4. CTF/TDM league for Pro players and CTF /TDM league for starters/mid skilled players,
5. New maps for CTF/TDM,
6. Coaches,
7. Perfect stream cfg,
8. Top e-sport org. ql rosters (atm only fnatic/lll/4kings/infused have ql squad),
9. QL chat new verison (smth like mirc but inside QL),
10. Show matches
11. Strict rules for all the legues, same for all the players
12. More stuff like demos/vods/interviews/coverages
13. Force pro players plays with there real names/2nd names instead of nicks,
14. Force pro players use there real pics,
15. Make a PRO player accounts (not only spawn button),
16. Quake on WCG (I can't understand what is the problem here?, c'mon ID pay some money to sneaky koreans)
17. Lan version for QL :)
18. more head admins for QL (One SyncError can't do all the work with community)

P.S. This product can be popular like cs, but seems that no one really cares... It's a pitty

Cooller/Fortune do not play from netcafe. I play from netcafe, cos at home i have huge pings to any serer for about 2months, and i can't fix it, also i can't change provider. Last match vs Finland, Sapego played from home also.

At the top level duel will keep quake alive a lot easier than team modes. At lower levels people might prefer team modes, so leagues for us is a good idea, but I think the uniqueness of duel, much smaller travel costs and ease of following the action makes it much more promising to see the game grow as an e-sport.

But duels are boring to watch. CTF is way more intertaining and exciting.

That's completely opinion based. For me there's too much down time and it's too easy to miss the action when watching a CTF stream. With duel I will see pretty much everything from one point of view, and everything I miss is shown on a very good overlay.
This is going from s spectator POV, I understand a lot more people might enjoy actually playing CTF. For the player base to grow I agree with son1dow, pick ups and leagues for everyone is a great bit to work on.

I find both TDM and CTF very tedious and boring to watch, but I know that for quake in general to grow there needs to be a mix of TDM, CTF and duels.

It's understandable why most tournaments decide to go for duels though :)

I'm new to Quakelive but followed the duel scene for quite some time now. Espeacilly Vo0 pwning @ painkiller got me interested in fps. After painkiller vanished from the scene I didn't care that much about fps anymore and played 1.6 24/7 -.-. Then I tried some warsow without any appreciable succes coz I hated getting raped and so I stopped playing warsow. 1.6 again :P.

There were always a few factors, which kept me off dueling:
- lack of beginners and friends playing it
- hard to learn comparing to 1.6, lack of any noticabel succes for beginners
- kinda frustrating to get stomped over and over :P
- cfg ; I know that having his own individual cfg and hud is what a lot of players enjoy about quake but as a beginner I want to play and don't waste my time whether it is better to play with fov 90 or 120. Not to mention +vstr binds LQL

Besides the listed points above I don't see any big future for either tdm/ctf or any other team shooter out there. Tdm is kinda boring to watch and non quakers don't even get it why it is important to have a rail near by dm6 ra. All they see is people shooting each other randomly and that's it. However ctf is pretty easy to understand but imo there are too little actions in 20 min compared to a tight 16:14 1.6 game with aces, ninjadefuse and so on.

On the other hand duel has everything you need for a big eSport game.

- man vs man; hero/loser
- everybody understands it
- close games (cooller vs rapha @ iem finals)
- different personalities

You get beat over and over, well so did everyone else. It takes years maybe, of losing 50-0, before you learn anything. CS players, of the time they only are, I win 25-0, with 150 ping, against 30 ping, after only two weeks in counter-strike. It is pussy-game for 2 fingered-players (and by 2-fingered, I mean they are lame as fuck).

Maybe there could be some kind of educational, progressional institution, or maybe people could just stop being pussies, and put in the same time and pain everyone else did?

Perhaps Quake doesn't need new players for the pro scene. I don't know. But I know that new players are essential for a community to grow otherwise most new players will stay away from the game. I just stated the obvious based on my own personal view and experiences and your bashing me for that.

I agree that TDM is the most interesting game mode atm, but it needs alot of love from ID to make it really good. Unfortunately ID doesn't seem to be interested in doing anything right now.

If I was them I'd just pay the money out of pocket, reputation's worth more. But as they said, it was a bad sponsor and all the others (and there were quite a few) paid out, so I wouldn't worry even if I didn't know that the sponsor was MSI.

Topic has been discussed a thousand times and whilst i agree it sucks that they were unable to pay the prizes out, or instead paid it out of their own pocket, the sponsor pulled out, and i'm sure it was written somewhere in small print :)

I don't think that they themselves have a server but I'd guess that they probably could spawn servers with permission from id.

It would be a nightmare if they play the final in Korea or Japan servers because in China the connection to these 2 countries are always bad.

The reason major events don't have team tourneys is because they have CS for that, they only need Quake Live to fill up the 1v1 FPS gap. As well as that duel attracts a lot more spectators, and is easier to explain to an esports (so not a specific Quake) follower.

Yeah I imagine it's a lot easier to sell to sponsors if it's a clearly different format to 1.6.

Change the freaking qualification dates already. All top players will be at dreamhack, except for the "top player" guard.

CTF at the moment, in QLive anyways, is the biggest pile of sh*t on earth (compared to osp/cpma days).

I've always viewed it as any team games with respawns are fairly boring and confusing for the newer viewer.

That's not to say that clan arena is the future, [because it's shit.] A game needs an objective and different ways of obtaining that. Hense why CS is so popular for spectators. If a player dies, that's him out of the fold. No need to pay attention to him now. It matters more to stay alive and play up. The players have to plant the bomb in either location and have strategies on how to go about doing this. There is a beginning and an end and the way the rounds play out differ each time (it's not just take point A, take point B, take point C as with TF2 or DOD).

This is why (in my opinion anyway) respawn team games have never really caught on spectator wise as much as duel or team games whereby a players life means a little bit more (if you die in TDM from a spawn, it's kinda like - meh, try again). As I mentioned before, I'm mainly talking about games like TF2, DOD, etc.

Quake TDM doesn't suffer as much, but I'd guess most of the people watching it already play or understand TDM anyway so it's kind of a non-point. The only difference is that there is a single (or sometimes double as with CS) objective in the shape of quad/battle suit and how they are utilized. With TF2 and DOD... It's flags. Not really as game changing as a bomb or a power-up. Game deciding sure... but meh. I think the way that 2GD was explaining TDM in his shoutcasts really helped newcommers understand the actual gameplay of TDM instead of it just appearing to be a ffa.
