I am sorry that it wasn't more clear when it was posted, all of the text has been updated, it will not be financially feasible for use to support the travel costs of sending an European team to Quakecon coming in this late in the summer. So as it stands right now we will only be scouting North American teams.

I just wished there was a lvlworld esque site that was fully suported by quake live allowing user made maps. Apart from that, I can easily live with all the other minor bugs/issues. GTV would be lovely but isnt quite as essential as it used to be due to more and more people steaming these days. I agree with you that so, so much more could be done with QL. Ah well :(

If you would continue to read the sentence directly following the one you quoted "All participating teams will be divided by skill level into separate divisions, allowing teams of all skill levels the chance to win some money."

Even within separate divisions, you will have clans who are better and clans who are worse.

I mean, say there are three top clans that are roughly at the same level, but a pretty clear cut above the other clans. (which is pretty realistic, imo) Unless you make Div1 out to be just three clans, I don't think anyone else that is in the same division with them has any realistic chance of winning the cup. What would motivate them to pay?

You're also gonna have the problem of clans saying they belong in a lower div just to have an easier time getting $$$

Unaware if they have discussed this, but possibly higher prize pots for higher skill leagues... That may entice people to play in higher leagues if they are Div 1 material but not necessarily top 2 or top 3 material to try harder for those more lucrative prizes.

Either that or sponsorship + pay2play payouts to allow the pot to stretch a few more positions down, if sponsorship is an option.

IMO this is exactly what the QL community needs, especially North America. An organization that provides extremely decent payout for ONLINE events,expanding events to other gametypes like CTF and TDM instead of another stale duel cup, offering near HD quality pay streams, or free ustream options so your always able to watch coverage of events.

Yes, I think the pay2play will again (as shown repeatedly) be a problem for the quake community. The intent of Quadgaming is noble, but irrelevant in terms of actual signups.. it's ultimately about how many people will step up and pay $10/mo ($120/yr) for tournaments where most won't get $ back - very few in my opinion. They should probably look for sponsors instead.

This sounds awesome and I am all for it but theres such a small audience for this. 1. The small Quake CTF Community 2. the amount of people within the ctf community that will pay pay2play 3. Gillz. I think 5 dollars a month would be a better idea.

first of all the first event is free and they will pay out 2000$, but as you can see by the lack of other ctf tournaments with prizemoney, its hard to get enough money back with just sponsors, so they decided to try a different way....
furthermore nobody forces you to play/pay, if you enjoy it enough, think you can win it back, or just wanna support a great ctf tournament series you can pay. nothing wrong with that.
also once teams get a bit more stable, quite a few can find clans to pay this kind of stuff for them

i am not sure if the concept is going to work, but its a bit unfair to say that they are leeching money from the quakers. still you could argue that 10$ per month is a bit too much, but we will see how many competitions they are going to offer,

To be honest the idea itself isn't that bad. Some can argue that 10 bucks each month is too much but at least they do something for the community. Then again 50-70 dollars for each team is way too much imo. I doubt that you'll find enough players who are willed to pay so much money. Furthermore the past showed that not every tournament cashed out the prize money (hi@cpl). Not that I suspect you but people will in the end, thus you have to prove your reliability first before you can charge money from players.

This is awesome. Its rather similar to what Cevo does in terms of having players pay money to join the league and then use that money to fund prizes. The biggest difference is that unlike Cevo, the prizes are set and are not based on sign ups (or not specified about) but this is an organization aimed specifically at quake CTF (probably TDM/1v1 at some later point) so I think the community will only benefit. I hope they sponsor a good team, someone please get BROKEN to Texas :(
Paying $10 a month to play in an organized skill rated CTF league for cash prizes while also being able to watch tons of matches on the HD stream seems good to me.

Yes. Yes. They won the 2 most recent leagues and are in the final of the third (out of 3). I would like to see broken, k1ck, LLL and fnatic at Quakecon but if you have to choose one I would think the current 'champions' would be the best choice.

sign me up. 10$ a month is nothing and even for lower skilled clans who might be "paying2lose" the fact is they will get to play vs high skilled teams/players in a structured environment which will quickly raise their skill level.

Also this is good for NA cause if players are actually paying maybe things won't last 4 months and never complete. Maybe players will be more motivated not to dick around and waste everyones time before matches blah blah and not showing up.

Isn't it great that there is a organisation that actually tries to make something happen in QL (CTF) instead of posting announcements and not doing a shit (Hi at AGP :D)??? You say 10$ a month is too mutch for a hobby you like if not love. So what is tennis then??? They pay from 300-500 EUR only for equipment and a court fee that often is five times higher than this 10$ preimium membership. Also did you look at the premium-shop on their site??? If you would have done it you would have seen that they offer 3 months for 25$ that means you save 5 bucks. So now we do some math and see that if you buy 4x3 Months you will pay 100$ for a whole year. That means that you will get two months free of charge and can play in two tourneys without the stress that you actually are loosing money. Now look at MLG (Major League Gaming) they have a entry fee of something about 325$ for a Halo3 team consisting of 4 people. They still manage to get 128 Slots filled for their pro-circuit events (even eu-teams travell there). Most of the 128 teams don't stand a chance against the Top 16 that almost allways go trough to the championchip-bracket (Classic was the only upset in the last and this season coming from nowere and taking 2 place at Columbus and top 5 places in other tourneys). Still they pay the 325$ plus travel costs and participate. Why because they love their game and want to get better in it. It is time that quakers start to wake up from their sleep caused trough PK/Q4/CPL and start to invest in their hobby again.

I really like c7 and think it's about as good as cp9. c8 is about as good as cp5 (though, I don't really like cp5 or c8, they have a boring style to them)

c10 is a crap map with the current architecture and I hate it.

That leaves us with 3 playable maps, even if one of them plays boring, which is good enough for a bo3. Hopefully the new CTF map will be made interesting, it certainly has some promise.

It's fast-paced, emphasizes team coordination, works well with different playstyles (3-1 and 2-1-1), gives a big advantage to the team that can time the medkit/RA/MH. What part about that do you consider shit?

RA room is closed and hideous, and as you say different style like k1ck 2flag-2midish and only 1 attacker gg map cp9 if you do that you barely will get the flag, you need 2-3 attackers all the time on cp9 and powerups are important on cp9, while on c7 REGEN is basically just a chasefest hardly a powerup.

Yes, ctf7 is not a very powerup oriented map. Neither is ctf2 for that matter, which "is the only decent map in ctf". I actually dislike the powerup orientedness on c8/c10, only 10 useful attacks per game, gg. RA room is vulnerable, sure, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. Going for RA on c2 is an even bigger deathtrap.

And I wish you wouldn't get personal here, it has no merit to the discussion. Or would you rather discuss why you lost ctf2 with a 4/5 cap difference to the 2def-2mid team?

Funny about the importance of powerups and attacking in q3, all I remember from 5v5 OSP CTF is 1-0 or even 0-0 scorelines between the top clans. Compared to that, QL CTF is actually more exciting. And I really don't get the cp9 worship. I personally played that map for over 5 years, I want to play something else now.

btw, amusingly, with the current team (after me/scoot joined), it is actually us who have won "every" ctf2 against you in an official :]

Yes I agree that the maps are far from perfect, however with the likely hood of quakecon doing tdm being absolute 0 ctf is a better choice for the community leading up to the event. But ask anyone who knows me, i am a HUGE tdm fan (particularly 2v2) so just keep your pants on it will come :)

Anyway, about the league, I personnally a mean probleme here.
The monthly fee itself is not what bother me, but the fact that individual player have to pay, and not clan, is.
At the moment you want to provide a service to CLANS, in form of permitting them to participate to money rewarded tournament. So you give a service to a clan, but ask individuals to pay. For me there's a major issue of logic here. Even without considering that, I think asking the players to pay will end up to a lot of problem, like big clans paying a lot, people aliasing not to pay, etc.
By switching to a clan monthly fee, everything becomes clearer. I'd switch to a 30-40$ clan monthly fee, as it seems to be a fair price, but that's up to you.

Problem is that I fail to see how a regular quake clan (not a power house like 4K that probably have someone to deal with that stuff) would manage to pay a monthly subscription as a clan (meaning that every players pay a bit I guess).
So given that I don't consider it logical or doable that individuals pay, and workable that clans pay, I'd say the project has a great chance of failing.

I'd pay $10 a month no problem if its a good system. Consistent high-level online competitions and decent prize money is worth $10 a month imho.

The Quake community keeps expecting handouts as if professional Quake is somehow a great investment. It amazes me that we still have Quakecon or any other major tournament that pays prize money.

On the surface it seems like a good idea but $10/month is way too much money for a monthly tournament system. The skill gap between the few teams that even play CTF regularly is massive, even at the amatuer level. I am probably average at best and paying $10 per month to play what would essentially amount to two matches per tournament is ludicrous to me.

It makes perfect sense for the teams that are already established and have been playing Quake CTF for even a modest amount of time together to want to play in a tournament system since they have a huge advantage over anyone new trying to play in it. New teams and players not only have to deal with being extremely far behind the established teams as far as skill and strategic levels go but also be subjected to seeding systems which makes it even more difficult for new teams to want to keep playing since they will keep getting steamrolled.

A much better idea is to run a pay to play season system like CEVO (and CAL back in the day) where players can compete regularly in a 5 or 6 week season and then be put in a playoff (here is your tournament) system at the conclusion of the season for the chance to win money. Have a pre-chosen map each week for the duration of the season. This way each player has the opportunity to play against the entire range of skill as well as understand the mechanics of each map.

I commend the idea and effort but ultimately I cant see this being anything more than the same 6 or 8 teams spending $40-$80 every month to watch one of the same three teams win the $1000.

Atleast for the start. When there are some teams with equal level (will take atleast 1 year) you still can switch to your actual systhem.

2nd: It is not a problem to pay a clanfee of 30-40€/$ per month. Lowskilled CS:S teams here in EU also must do this in order to get a private server and a TS-/Vent-Server so why can't Quakers do this???

dunno about euroland but the team scene in na isnt big enough to support this sort of thing. Theres barely 5 or 6 active ctf teams and maybe another 5 inactive ones. You can always find a scrim with one of the active teams anyway. So i dont really see the point of this for the team modes.

Duels on the other hand are another matter. Theres plenty of competition at the mid and high skill levels. I would pay 10$ a month if they ran good duel tournies. (i would also do it for the team modes but thats just me).
