Pretty much. I can see why Howard Webb didn't want to send people off in the final and was trying to give them every opportunity to play with 22 on the pitch (even when there probably should have been 19)
Just found it funny that Holland had a hissy fit over a block on that left mid in the box when they were hacking shins all game
The problem with keeping 22 players in the pitch is that they are NOT playing football anymore. They destroyed Spain's initial play, which was being great, with really dirty play and left unpunished. IMO, this is worse than Urugay's so called "cheating". At least Urugay got their punishment which Ghana failed to score.
It wasn't the fouling that ruined the play after 20minutes it's that Spain have started the first 20mins of every game at a high pace and then eased off to conserve energy.
The aim being to hit teams quick and early and open up the game, but if it doesn't happen early you can't just keep going or you would be so knackered at the 60minute mark that you'd end up conceding goals (remember Arsenal v Barcelona?).
Yes, but both things are true. Spain slowed the pace, but also was taken off of the game by incountable fouls. Spain still keeps passing even when slowing down, and by that time they couldn't anymore because each second pass they got a bad foul, and many weren't even whistled. NL just didn't want any football happening by any means. One thing is presuring the ball creation, as Arsenal did at that game, and another one is making fouls by system and not getting any punishment.
Yeah, the British pundits attributed the change after 20minutes to a tactical switch by van Marwijk (of course they didn't say what he changed).
Luckily Seedorf was interviewed at the ground during half-time to inform the British public that it was in fact Spain easing off and there being lots of fouls.
They also proclaimed Iniesta as the player of the tournament just because he scored :D
Nope, they just say stupid things all the time, they usually praise Dutch tactics in PL (van Bommels tackle would have been "just late and clumsy") but last night it was as if it was the worst thing to ever happen in football.
Sure it was bad but christ, that's all they went on about.
True, but what's done was done up till that point, with 3 minutes left it was particually harsh, the black guy was fowled and the play on cost them the game.
The "hissy fit" was because Sneijder's freekick was clearly (unless your blind) deflected by a Spaniard and we should have had a corner. Instead they got a goalkick which eventually led to a goal.
Amusing how you english (read Zer1toN) whine about our play just to defend that cunt of a referee of yours.
Awwww bless. Brought out the England card. Face it, Holland were kick-boxing not playing football and you're lucky people didn't get sent off earlier and finished it quicker
Yeah, they should have played more confident, but even then Spain just has the better players for that type of play.
Right now, the only way to really interrupt their game is to foul and make them feel the pain, as shown by the Dutch. (And Germany in the old days)
So it has become the choice between two evils, play fair and nice and have only a small chance to win. Or play ugly and have a better chance :/
NL still lost by the very same margin Germany did, so, what was the advantage of using violence? None, and they will be remembered for they dirty play, while the German team will be remembered for their good football.
Netherlands lasted another 30 minutes and they had more scoring opportunities than we did.
But yeah those are ifs and buts and I am glad we got away from the brutal image.
For the Dutch the motto remains "Just look, don't touch" :P
Podolski and Trowchowski just aren't up to the job all the good performances were down to the great link up play between Scweinsteiger, Ozil and Muller.
He'll accuse it of being a failure at life and claim he's superior in every way.
Something like "You beat me at something I care nothing about. Congrats, you must feel so good about your pathetic life."
the intial pass to iniesta was when he was offside. the second one from which he scored wasnt but should never have been allowed since play should have stopped due to offside.
no really that picture is the result you will always get. Just replay the youtube video for yourself.
You crappy Swedish TV station should stay with hockey ;P
It misses the point though since it was intercepted (and Iniesta didn't interfere with play) he then moved into an onside position (well, he already was onside) during the second phase.
