Rapha is a positional god. My main nigga cooller can time 20 items at once but rapha will show up and spam the fuck out of him every time.

We all laughed at rapha when he boasted he was 5 steps ahead, motherfucker cranked it up to 11.

The only people i can see that can beat rapha are probably:
Cooller when 100% in form and determined to beat some ass.
Cypher running on 5 cases of bawls.
Stermy while simultaneously getting blowed by Matteo
Av3k after stealing Rapha's Sketchers and feeling smug about it.

Stermy beat him twice, once on that online tournament and then right after on lan.

Rapha takes advantage of players that use flamboyant moves and the such. Pushing them into making mistakes he can capitalize on and not making any mistakes himself. Stermy isn't flashy, he's by the book, even refusing to sometimes use his aim and run over you (unlike strenx). This means he hardly ever makes mistakes, but unlike rapha he doesnt force you to make any mistakes.

This is why Rapha has a tough time playing stermy, if he goes head to head, he gets out aimed. And he can't really punish stermy for making any mistakes, and can't catch stermy when he is making a flashy move (boring fucker)

But this is why cooller/av3k/cypher will beast the shit out of stermy, since they do flamboyant shit to mess with his style, and stermy isn't smart enough to catch them doing it, so he gets rolled.

really the only thing I think about stermy's game is that he's a little too much by the book sometimes. He does have great aim and he can take advantage of any opening you give him.

Edit: I'm really no expert, but it seems like Rapha's game goes past just punishing flashy players. DaHanG to me isn't flashy and during those moments, he still gets punished as well. I think he punishes any moment where they leave themselves open to it- to the max.

also stermy is one of the 2 pros that doesn't use accel, the other one being strenx (crashing into walls and having a very difficult time with rockets and rail flicks)

av3k seems to used accel now, but when i played him last times around winter he said he neeeever used accel in q4/q3/ql

Like i've said before, Rapha is a master at pacing and 'time' in the game. And I don't mean item times. I mean how quickly people can get from point A to point B. Rapha knows this automatically, so if you are going to RA on T7 and rapha can actually beat you there, he will go and set up a trap but if he knows that he will be 1 second too late to set up that trap, he'll just spam it or even wait for your ass to go get rail right after RA or some other ridiculous strategy.

This inherent ability allows him to know when to chase or back away from items and if he can set up traps in time. You can see a glimpse of this in the cooller video, when he spams grens and goes around very quickly to surprise cooller at some item (YA i think)

He does these 'time' tricks a lot, there is no wasted time when watching Rapha, he is always where he needs to be to counter your next move before you even know what your next move is.

Raphas strenghs are:
+ Rocket Launcher
+ Doesn't waste any 'Time' (read above)
+ Perfect positioning depending on where you are vs powerup
+ Perfect Item Timing
+ Perfect Knowledge of enemies health
+ Doesn't let enemies hit him for free (always gives as much damage as he receives)
+ Doesn't get caught off guard
+ Knows when to back away from fights or when to commit

Do you think, if the pro-Quake community adequately recruited, and could provide ample financial contracts, rapha would be the 'best'? Isn't it the case though, only young players are 'the best'? Honestly, from what I can tell, people get better at video-games as they grow-older... even potentially being better at 45 than 18.

Regular people never understand the mentality of professional athletes. You need to make enough money, while you can still play, to sustain yourself (and possibly your family also), beyond when you can still play. No such money has ever been present in Quake (fatal1ty sponsoring products does not count). So what do we get? A bunch of kids, who don't have any real financial responsibilities, acting the role of 'best players in the world'. What idiot can't see through the facade?

Carmac, there is a program called QL Demo Tools (http://sourceforge.net/projects/qldt/) it acts much like a VLC Media Player for Quake Demos. Works very well, has pause, slow-mo, fast forward, etc. Try it out, see how you like it, I don't know how exactly you're capturing the feed from the PC (probably splitting the output from the PC) but give it a shot, it might helps.

Also, I suggest having players doing a complete pause (timescale 0) rather than slowing down when they want to explain something. Still have them do slow-mo for parts when needed, but I think you should also have them pausing too :)

It is common for good players to be unable (that is, to a level of their "actual" tactics) to explain themselves, I think.

raphas one was better for sure, but not just because of the language barrier. he had a more interesting demo where he spent alot of time out of control. in that dm13 demo cooller is jsut running the items trying not to make a mistake for 10mins. nothing that interesting happens.

Wasn't to surprised on how this turned out. The language barrier prevents him from going into the detail that rapha was able to give. Without that detail, these type of videos lose their quality. Cooller most of the time was just explaining the obvious or sometimes not even saying anything at all. In the future it would be best to have some type of translation cause as it stands. There's a big difference between the rapha video and this one.

Sorry to disagree, but I found rapha's part to be less informative than cooller's. Maybe you're mistaking somebody talking non stop for giving you actual information.

Example: iirc all rapha had to say about cooller was that his game style was "strangle" type control and something about his use of rail, where a miss wouldn't be crucial.

Cooller on the other hand, aside from mentioning rapha's tactical game, did constantly point out ingame moves peculiar to rapha, and giving credit at the same time. Ok, he didn't explain every detail of those peculiarities, but then one just had to look at what cooller was pointing to.

This cooller part was in fact very enjoyable. Informative and personal at the same time.

It just amazes me how we can see things so differently. Let cooller try this again in his native tongue with voice over, and all is good. Trying to defend the undefendable is ridiculous!

lol this is the response i expected from the cooller fanboys. "did constantly point out ingame moves peculiar to rapha" Yeah thanks for pointing out that he's gonna pickup an item or when mega is gonna next after he picks this up. This is stuff the viewer already knows. The reason for this videos is he can explain why exactly hes gonna do something.

After about the 8:30 mark, cooller stops even talking till about OT. Some of the most important parts of the game and yet he doesn't say anything. Even after OT he doesn't say much either. Carmac basically had to start prying out information from cooller just to keep the dialogue going. During 2nd OT Carmac asked Cooller what he was thinking and all he could get out of him was "I'm try to make maximum damage". Now if Carmac were to ask rapha something like this, we would get a more elaborate answer from him about the strategy he plans to use in the next minute or so. Again this is probably a language barrier or Cooller might not be that talkative of a person.

With that said, there is a night and day difference between the quality of videos between rapha and cooller. It would be nice in the future to maybe have some form of translated voice over so these players can properly explain exactly what they were thinking.

Talking about picking up items? Looks like you missed the lg dodging slomo cooller's been elaborating on. Or him pointing out the very neat drop down of rapha's, to midlevel wall hugging under the ledge and thus evading coollers rockets. In fact. looks like you missed the whole lot of it.

Example from rapha's installement: spawn blah blah blah yellow armor blah blah going to rl but then "here's the problem" and he goes to slomo on those two really nice rockets coming in. This works alright, but it's pure show. Everybody knows that two those rockets into the face are "a problem". And that they result into a "deep deep hole" he has to "dig himself out". While working on the presentation level, all this blabber provides zero content.

Cooller on the other hand, any time he says "that's rapha" ingame, he's basically saying "look at what he's doing there", and pointing to something noteworthy. And when looking, I do see what he means, and that it is noteworthy indeed. True, he's not detailing or explaining what he means, so the presentation could be considered lacking. But content on the other hand is ample, because he's highlighting points worth it.

But then, his presentation is actually great, too. It just needs a little finesse to realize that.

All this only for the records by the way. Because you'll never get any of this I'm sure.

Sure I watch movies, but bear in mind that a Quake match is much more dynamic than any movie you will see. There's a constant shower of visual signals that your eyes need to interpret.

Pausing will work, of course, but if you make a video where a viewer needs to pause to follow it, you fucked up. (Side note: Cooller requested English for this one.)

For the record, I think he did a good job - him talking a bit less than rapha makes me think more on my own about what's going on in the game when I watch it.

He ALREADY slows the video down while talking so he can make the point. Similar pauses in key moments to read the subtitles would be quite the same thing, won't they? Moreover, I can read a few times faster than cooller can speak.

For the record…I have nothing against cooller, he is our Michael Jordan of quake. Without cooller, there wouldn’t be as much interest as there is now for this sport. For some reason he just doesn’t care about learning enough English to communicate to all of his fans. Hell, maybe that’s why he has so many visa problems.
As bad as my English is, I could have at least expressed some of what I was trying to do…here’s an example.
Carmac “What were you trying to do here kobe”? Kobe “Mr. Carmac I really don’t know what the hell I was trying to do, besides run around and hope I hit something” slowing video down “Right here he was going for yellow armor, and I knew I had to bust a cap in his ass”.

Well I think some type of translation voice over could work well but that might not be the problem. Some players during post game interviews tend to give very short answers to questions about what happened in the game and yet some other players will go into more detail. The problem with these type of classic match videos is when you try to do them with the players that give the short one word answers. They aren't gonna give a rapha/2gd style explanation of what or why they did something. Imo these short answers explanations are gonna ruin the quality of these classic match videos. I guess the only thing carmac can do is just try to work more detailed answers out of them by keep asking more questions during the matches.

Commentary is quite a personal thing, the fact that 2GD is liked so much only shows that nobody can comment in the same way. And rapha is rapha, if you expect all shows to have commentary exactly like rapha's and are going to compare all shows with his, you'd better immediately ask Carmac to do all the shows with rapha only. =)

He probably is learning English. You underestimate how difficult it is to learn another language well enough to speak without thinking about it. And even when you get to that point, you will still be horribly shit.

especially considering russia probably doesn't have the best educational system around and russian is a lot less similar to english than most of the languages people here have as their native tongue.

I don’t underestimate how hard or easy it is to learn another language, since I’m bilingual myself.

It's different to grow up being bilingual and then start learning another language in your spare time when you are an adult. I grew up learning my second language from a young age, so I would agree, that it isn't impossible. However as an adult I have tried to learn a few other languages. I studied Italian full time while living in italy, and although I got to the point where I could speak quite well (after 6 months) I wouldn't say I was anywhere near being good enough to give in-depth commentary during a quake game.

Although Cooller may have been able to take english lessons, I don't think that he would have done english at school. So unless he studied english full time, the amount of time that he would have been able to put into it, wouldn't be ideal.

Considering his background, I would say his english is quite impressive, and although it would be nice for him to speak better english, putting in the effort just to please his fans, would probably offer very little reward to him.
