and since I'm not at uni anymore I need a laptop + stick for being on the road anyway. So it would come down to reading normal literature.

Only plus I can see so far is size in my luggage, don't know if it's possible to read on the kindle without a lamp during the night. Don't care about the little money I could save, plus this way I can recommend and lend books to friends (cause they won't have a kindle, either :P)

The iPad is great for browsing the web, email, chat etc. Since getting one I start my pcs much less often.

It's not great as an ebook reader though - I don't have a problem reading the screen etc, but I did have an issue with it overheating when left out in the sun for an hour, and that was in the uk so god knows how it could be used on the beach on a sunny day.

Newspapers? Why stick to traditional media when you can get all the news you want online?

im not saying its perfect, but for my needs its the best device yet made. i dont even use epubs, i'm mainly on pdf's.. i like to being able to have a dictionary and being able to highlight text with a touch screen.

can you give me another device that allows this other than the sony ones for this price? i just wish there was something like this but with a bigger screen ( prs-900 has a joke screen)

Oh I agree, I also have a PRS-600 since it seemed to be the best reader for my needs as well.

The justification issues with ePUBs is a bit annoying, but there's third party firmwares in development that will solve the issues. They currently work on PRS-505 and are being ported to the 600. I currently convert all my ebooks to LRF using Calibre since justification works with that format.

I noticed an issue with PDFs and the dictionary: if you use a tool like LaTeX to create the PDF, for some reason the PRS-600 doesn't understand the character encoding and so double tapping a word will highlight the whole sentence and finds nothing in the dictionary.

I was under the impression that the 700 had a joke screen whereas the 900 had a screen similar to the 600.

what bothers me the most about sony software is the zooming feature, if you zoom a page to cut the white margins and go to the next page, you will have to zoom again, since it does not save the zoom settings of the last page. Do you know if this is being adressed in a patch? : D

about prs-900, i say its a joke screen cause they just increased the height and did nothing about the width of the screen, its like a cripled screen, the larger size (only height) doesnt realy help if you want to read some technical books with graphs and images.

I wouldn't hold my breath for a firmware update from Sony regarding the zoom issue you mentioned, but it might get fixed in one of the third party firmwares. There are two I know of:

From the discussions I've seen, they plan to release a version that works on the 600 sometime in August so hopefully we won't have to wait too long.

By the way, do you use the Sony software to manage your ebooks? If so, I would recommend you check out Calibre! It can manage your ebooks both on your computer and on your reader, synch between the two and convert ebooks from almost any format to any format with loads of options. You can even subscribe to RSS feeds and have it create ebooks from them for you. I have not touched the Sony software once since installing it :)

You can convert ePUBs using Calibre to almost any format, including formats supported by the Kindle.

Initially I thought what a crap ... reading books in a device. But then I read your comment and looked at amazon and I want one. I think is awesome for work, work related pdf docs and books. Instead of looking for papers all over your desk, on your desktop’s and laptop’s folders, on your bookshelves, you have them all there with you.

If you want one to read PDFs I would wait if I were you. The current form factor really isn't great for reading PDFs that are typically A4 sized or similar, especially if they have diagrams or images. You can reflow the text on most readers, but the result is more often than not aweful.

For reading PDFs or technical documents, you would be much happier waiting for an A4 sized reader.

I was thinking about buying a Kindle DX because the new 9" Asus and Powerbooks keep being delayed, but for this price I just pre-ordered a Kindle 3.

When they finally release the new readers with plastic screens I'll just sell this one and buy whatever's hot at the moment.

Unfortunately no, a few manufacturers have announced products that would fit the bill but the release dates keep getting pushed back and I haven't really kept up to date on new announcements.

I was waiting for the Plastic Logic Que which would be perfect since it was supposed to be able to read DOCX and XLSX in addition to the popular ebook formats, is US Letter sized and designed mainly for business use, but I don't think it'll ever get released :/

imo they should just give you a license for the e-book when you buy the paperback, in that case I'd get one right away. too bad they are probably not really looking for profit from the devices themself though.

Agree, i prefer paper, but sometimes its very useful to be able to search a book electronically.

Until those things cost 30$ with a day's worth of akku runtime it isn't even worth thinking about it. Those overpriced gadgets are useless.

With a library pass I can get all the books I want. I can read ebooks on my handy, portable consoles, pc. I can print them on my laser printer very cheap. I could even buy books @ amazon they are incredibly cheap and sell/trade them afterwards.
