It's very unlikely we will be playing again IMO. We pretty much retired after winning the first quadcup. Think we played two (?) pcws in the run up to the second quadcup, and it showed with our lack of practice. We signed up because no-one else did and it was easy money. I was ready to stop playing after the first quadcup.

For what it's worth, I actually like c3. It seems most people complaining about it have no idea how to play it and just rage out when their mindless attacks don't work.

2nd, I mean, it's not q3ctf3, it's qzctf3...

the forward flag allows for quicker in/out through rj's, the center is more open with the pu/mh below and the ra on top. It's not just mindless wall-of-def anymore. And the fact that q3ctf3 was usually played 5on5 (well, at least in EU) and qzctf3 is played 4on4 allows for more breathing space.

+ for the map, whereas I think it's a shame that Bloodlust (c9) has put it's focus so much on midcontrol, instead of the extra breathing area where ra/mh used to be in the 3W package.

well it's funny how ctfers always whine "no maps, no cups,blabla" and then quad makes $1000 cup and 3 teams show up cause others think $5 buy in was too much. :D

All the top teams showed up for the first one tho. Just sucks that it's always the same teams that show up. Back in the day clans practiced to actually get better and you could see div3 clans steadily rise to become top contenders, sadly that isn't the case in QL.

but still, last week's ctf cup had a majority of new teams/clans and i hope this one will as well and it'd be nice if some older teams could be attracted, like yyt for example.

in my oppinion clans are just bored to play the same 4
maps again and again. thats why most clans stopped playing.
qlctf had a quite good start. i remember bibs season 2 eu
had about 80 signups and lots of new clans were found.

Why ctfers don't play ctf5?

It's too unconventional. No armour in the base for the defense, as all the major items are in midfield, and it also has a CG/NG. I'm not saying those are bad things, but the typical quake player is extremely conservative and resistant to change. To play a map with such an unusual layout would require such a different style in play that most people didn't even bother to try - instantly proclaiming "it's shit".

It may be as bad as people fear, but I'd still have liked to have played it a few times with different setups to see if any worked.

These 1 day tournaments are funneh, but nothing prestigious imo.

BiBs is fun and all, but where is the coverage? There is none so I don't find it entertaining to follow.

Back in the days everyone played in Barrysworld cups and CB after that. Actually this year I found the CB cup the most interesting, but then the final got fucked up by LLL.

I've played qw from 2001-2009 off and on, but I like their NQR and EQL leagues.
The teams need to report their own matches with a screenshot. They can add a report if they like, but it's not forced. I always keep track of their leagues as it's simple to navigate and see the scores etc etc. Why isn't there such a simple league in QL?

I think the lack of a league which everyone wants to play in is something QL misses the most.

i guess teams are lazy. bibs 2nd season had a lot of walkovers due to teams not showing up. i guess it's really not worthy to organise more then these 1 day cups for ctf since on the long run everything fails. anyway, esl has ctf ladder as well, it's barely played (if played at all).

In the qw seasons there are also teams folding and going afk. You can't stop that. It's ok, but personally I just miss something to follow.

Just wait for a good update with new maps and then some teams might go back active again. You can't organize a good league/cup without good maps.

c7 was good in the beginning when it was fresh and everyone tried different tactics and played it very offensive. Now it turned into turtle mode with RA stacking (which gives 2 defenders) and stuff.

I would hope for a map pack which gives 10 playable maps so matches are really diverse. The thing is at the moment there is so few maps that it is easy to play the same on all of them. If you have for example 10 maps, you will have teams having opportunities to switch it up with map choice and tactics. Now you expect what the other team will pick and there is no surprise whatsoever to the tactics that will be used.

Remember when wcp15 entered quake ctf? It was refreshing and it took some time for teams till they were very solid on it. But before that solid state it was fun watching the quad runs, sneak attacks and all that work well. (Quakecon cloud9 vs gunzoids/aAa is the best example on how cloud9 destroyed all European teams on that map one year and then the European teams learning the map to give equal competition next year).

Entering old maps won't work wonders though, so I hope ID is smart enough to enter some new maps that no one played before in Quake 3. Giving W3, WCP1, WCP5, WCP9 and WCP15 would be a good thing, but still it's not hard to look up the tactics that worked in Quake 3 for those maps instead of making your own.

c2,c7,c10,w3,cp1,cp5,cp9 and cp15 should make up for a good enough map pool for early tournaments though, adding some new maps to mix it up to make it like 12 would be ideal. a Best of 3 would be very interesting to play then. You'll get this 'one team owns this map and the other one owns that one' feeling again which gives real competition. You would want to beat the other on their map. And picking maps based on strength, weaknesses, play styles etc. would be created.

But I guess that this won't happen for another 6 months at least. But I like this retirement at the moment, maybe some lower division teams might rise up with the lack of pro teams to beat them ;)

Doesn't have to be because Quake Live is 4v4. In Quake 3 it was still mostly 5v5, which is quite the difference. I would probably use different tactics on maps like w3 and cp9 if they happened to return, because for example the rail change will affect a lot on cp9. In Quake 3 rail was so strong on cp9 that you had 1 or 2 middle all the time and it worked. I doubt 80 damage rails will keep off 2 people heading for you if you can't kill 1 instantly for example.

Those old maps and introducing a new map each month would still be my preference though.

Agreed. We need a drastic change like this to the map pool if QL CTF is gonna have any hope of staying alive. There's a lot of competitive teams who have dropped about because of this as well as tournaments and leagues.
