should get a tagan psu, you can plug in all the cables when you need them, which most of the time you dont, and just wreck airflow having aload of cables tied up to your case and unused

I cant seem to find any Tagan PSU's in either scan or ebuyer (the two places I am hoping to buy from).

I also looked up the power needs for an i5 and that gfx card and 500 was suggested. would you recommend higher?

After a quick search it seems modular PSUs are more expensive, and I could probably live with the wires as I am not overclocking and will try tuck them out the way.

I felt the OCZ PSU was reasonably priced at £50 so thats why I picked it. Do you think it is a poor choice?

they are 12v each, etc etc, a cpu of 1.65volt uses around 65watts on a constant to remain stable or close too

most neons and ultra bright LEDs are for cars, not low powered versions made to actually be in a PC

Forget 1156, you need socket 1366, buy the mobo second hand and the i7 920.

Its a much better longterm investment and will hold its value better when the next socket comes out cos it will be the next most desirable one.

Yeh 1156 will be dead long before 1366 your right, but I really am not into buying second hand parts for a PC. I mean warranty/returns/misuse (overclocking) etc kinda shuns me away from that idea.

You don't need a i7 for gaming :x. Rather get a phenom and stop wasting so much money if you only want to play games. If you do photoshopping and video editing then a i7 might be the right thing.

AMD Phenom II x4 9xx might give better performance for money, but you gotta check some site for benchmarking.

With AMD you could check a motherboard wtih USB and SATA 3, though I don't think those will be needed for awhile ( 2 years or more ).

problem with amd is that they only support ati crossfire, and ati is wank. simply have to get an intel board for sli compliance to be future proof and have good solid drivers (:D)

personally i dont know, but google tells me theyre pretty close together. and ontop of that, for gaming they should be identical. maybe with some tasks the amd pulls ahead because of its default clock beeing slightly higher, but then u can overclock intel so easily... :P

like p0rt said, go to a decent site that sells psu's and filter out all the psu's that are not modular, get one around 500-600 watts in the pricerange of ~75 quid, if its got some kind of 80 plus rating then its even better, but stick with A-brands.

ur memory wont make any difference for gaming (whatever is under 1600mhz will be fine too) unless u intend to overclock.

i dont really know what hte best p55 board is atm but Asus is usually good quality so thats fine.

CPU, i5's are fine for gaming but keep in mind a core i7 on 1156 will have hyperthreading = effectively 8 cores instead of 4, might come in handy for games like battlefield bad company 2 and future games.

HDD, ive had issues with the samsung F1's in the past so im going to avoid samsung for a while. dunno much about F3's but if u just want a fast boot disk i thought the western digital black 640gb or 1tb were the quickest of that make.

gfx card: fuck ATi, get an nvidia gtx 460 1gb edition, upto u if u want to spend 10-20 more quids on a factory overclocked version or not but its worth it in my opinion.

case and dvddrive dont really matter, there are tools to make a dvddrive spin slower -> less noise. and u can always stick some noise isolation in any case if it doesnt meet ur standards, but ofc u can always do some more research and find out wich case is teh most silent for a good price.

Its not really though.

Intel are only doing this because they have a stockpile of 950's/960's due to their retarded pricing structure and the more costly cpu's not really doing anything over the entry level 920 and 930 as they overclock like stink and the more expensive one's don't OC anymore. (Pretty soon they'll do the same with the 960)

If I you had a 950 or an 930 at 3+ ghz you would see very little difference between the two, even though one costs twice the price of the other.

It still costs a small fortune to build an entry level i7 rig, but yeah, I would probably stump up the extra 40 bucks to get the more exclusive 950.

But this isn't intel doing somethign good, this is simply intel shifting stuff they can't sell because of their initial greed and misunderstand of their markets.

That's why the next CPU's they make will not overclock.
Because overclocking renders their more expensive CPU's redundant, unless they have more cores.

Now if they reduce the price on the 980x or the 970 then maybe that will be something good.

The entry level 920's and 930's were just as fast as all but the 6 cores on air. It killed any incentive to go beyond an entry level i7.

I'm splitting hairs over buying a new (unopened second hand) i7 980x for £625. I would never pay retail, and its still so much money, but I would use the extra power. It just a lot to swallow for a CPU.
