also dbz has storyline issues after frieza's saga, because toriyama himself said dbz was meant to end there but they wanted more money out of it. That's why at that exact same time the story becomes retarded, for example reviving red ribbon, gods of the gods of the gods of the gods of the gods (and that isn't an exageration. That's exactly the amount of god tiers on dbz), etc...and not even mentioning db gt.

I think that's why Vegeta is easily the coolest cat in the whole DBZ though. He's just so fucking tenacious and never gives up on being the biggest badass ever. As much as i dislike DB series in general, i did like that character very much. +he scores additional points for being a cynical motherfucker and the douchebag vibe he gives off while kicking ass, it's awesome. I mean he basically calls his own son a faggot for having white hair or some shit, how low is that? What a baller. Wish he'd off a major baddie as well, he deserved it.

He did kick Goku's ass so much he needed some fat samurai turd, Krillin and his son to tag-team in order to not even kill him as much as just drive him away, though.

Ya he had goku owned hard in their first meeting, which made me happy.

The 2nd time they fought during majin buu saga, goku was holding back going SSJ3 cuz his time on earth would have ran out, which is insulting to Vegeta.

i'd still recommend serial experiments up front; it's slow and sometimes unclear, but it's always at least symbolically on a very interesting topic (like paranoia agent i would say)

That's such an interesting thing that i've been mulling over lately.

The kind of distance there is between different genres and so on. The potential reach you have with five mouseclicks are endless, yet we're trapped by this barrier of not knowing what to look for.

Youtube is the perfect example of a place you can find pretty much anything, but for lack of key-words to search for you have nothing but the crap that goes up on the main page. This is a general thing.

There are methods like metacritic or imdb where you rely on some sort of critics, but I find even with this meta-awareness of method in searching for new things i'm more often struck by new things as if by accident; for instance looking up the score of a movie or noting the likes of an artist i like in an interview.

One good strategy is rely on a strength you have to find new things; so say if you are musical, you can rely on people who recognizably have skill to recommend art in other domains.

It's really hard to branch out, and you have to go against your preliminary instincts sometimes; that's why there's a certain level of trust involved when you try to leap into a new domain. For instance if you equate anime with childishness then you need some friend you really trust with quality to insist on it.

Just to point out why this is important, if it's not obvious: One of the reasons people watch mediocre movies and the shit on youtube frontpage is because they don't have the capacity to find what they really like.

There is a paradox that the most watched movies do not get rated high on imdb.com; you can explain this 1. by saying people who vote on imdb are more sophisticated, 2. it reflects movies as lowest common denominator.

The 3rd way to explain it, which i think is the most interesting factor, is simply that people don't have the extra energy to figure out which movies they would really like. To recognize how recurrent and problematic this is takes us a step in the right direction i think.

I don't get why people do that? That is as ignorant and preconcieved as it gets. Animation is THE most creative medium, only limited by imagination. I would take it over cinema any day.

Given the culture i've grown up it's a fairly obvious thing to do. If your experiences are limited to cartoon network and disney then clearly it's not easy to break the association.

This is such a general thing though. In the end some people will have a more difficult time, regardless of ability, to judge their own tastes reflectively instead of instinctually.

It's very hard work and has to be repeated in all areas where upbringing has limited you. Whether it's morality, food, art.. Some people are more fortunate than others regardless of honesty, intelligence, etc.

Of course, one naturally gets lead to consider whether there is something deeper to the inclination to regard cartoonishness as something childish besides mere accident of history.

On this deeper consideration i'm inclined to think that there's something special about japan that they let the cartoon world take a deeper hold. Perhaps, to speculate, their notions of life or whatever it is that lets them (?) consider robots less uncanny and more friendly, are the same kind of considerations that lets them more naturally accept the cartoon claim to reality.

I'm reminded of the low status that was given to Lord of the Rings in Portugal when I wanted to watch it with my siblings. It's hard to relate how they view it, but the relation was very much like the relation between the people here uninitiated in anime have to a "real fictional movie".

They lacked the associations that bound witches and wizards and spells and so on to the "real" world. It was irrelevant to life.

I can't recall dark city now. I do feel the inland empire mood and this euro caravan song to represent *something*, or like the deep sound in the back of many "burial" tunes.. I have no idea what roots that kind of mood has, it's not really absurd or surreal, or maybe it is, a new version of it.
