he needs to improve his aim imho. it is what has let him down recently.. and on top of that he sometimes does odd decisions - plays less carefully and seems to be a tad behind other player's decisions.

but is this mainly because he has been competing on a high level for a while and the other players had the ability to adapt to his play style?

he was bad at quakecon cause he played a lot of ctf and lost his focus, i guess.

then at gamescom he played better and better as the tournament progressed, beat cooller 3:0, and played really good in the final. but killsen played the match of his life, and basically hit a million rails, especially on that last ztn.

i'd say rapha would have won 8/10 times vs killsen

And what happend to him at ASUS Cup? ;) Loosing 0-5 against Cooller was also unexpected.

He beat Cooller 3-0 within the past day, Cypher hasn't beaten him in a tourney since Qcon 2008, and he's won nearly every event in the past year, yet Kilsen complains the other two guys have "reached another level". a) he said the both of them reached "another level" which means they improved and nothing else, they obviously were not as strong as rapha before, so saying killsen meant they both were better than rapha now is just a weak assumption you made. It should be a challenge for every competitive person to measure themselve against opponents that have improved.

I think he was pretty down due to the succession of events. 3 major lans in 3 or 4 weeks, he must be jetlagged to death. Once he has some rest he'll be back to normal. (sadly.)

If rapha spend 1 month in europe he would own.

The reality is that rapha is a very creative and gifted player .. but he doesnt have aimers to practice in the US.

Everyone knows that if you don't get pushed you don't improve. in pretty much everything you do.

So its logical that his aim doesn't improve at the same rate as his tactics.
One month practicing with strenx/cypher/avek/stermy etc. and rapha would be a monster.

rapha always goes to europe before big tournaments and practises with the players you mentioned

rapha should practice with tox, since the guys playing (and often losing to) Tox are the ones that placed so well at Quakecon. :)

The Quake player rankings have been shaken up quite a bit since Quakecon. k1llsen, stermy and maybe spart1e seem to have stepped it up a bit and rapha hasn't been on form. Hope tek9 do another top10 poll, would be the most interesting one yet.

2.cooller (cooller was only guy to beat k1llsen at gamescom and his final against cypher at quakecon WOW he also beat rapha easily on asus cup TWICE without losing a single map, so he is improving a lot)
3.k1llsen (if he is consistent, only guy i can actually see outaiming cypher)

5.rapha (if he uses his brain, instead of taking stupid risks)

ya beat rapha EASILY in asus cup yet lost 3:0 to rapha at gamescom. holy fuck ur stupid as shit.

he lost 2:0 and 3:0 at asus. So he lost 5-0 if add all maps, he didn't win a single map in 2 matches(the winners bracket match and losers bracket match) he was totally owned and plus on quakecon rapha lost 2-0 to cooller so yeah out of 4 games rapha won 1 against cooller in the last 3 tournaments which are all recent.

rapha won those tournaments several months ago, in quake a lot changes in months, people adapt, players get better, some get worse, game gets patches, map pools change etc.

I'd say number one is between Cypher and k1llsen right now. They definitely need to play a bo5 with some cash on the line.

Either way the Quake scene is pretty exciting for a spectator at the moment. With some oldschoolers coming back (z4, czm, tox) and the rankings shaken up like you said. Curious to see how this seasons IEM plays out.

i hate to be a nother german defending k1llsen but you are really underestimating him

k1llsen missed a lot of big events and his training has been on and off, in his current form he plays quite stable and i think he can do just fine in the next event. that doesnt mean that he will win or anything but predicting he is not even getting out of groupstage... (he had some really unfortunate groups in the past btw)

but well, he still has a tendency to fuck up games he has almost already won ;)

k1llsen's got a really crazy rail, when its on hes fucking scary as shit, when its off though, hes just fodder.

I played him once in quake 4 on Monsoon before he was really known, only player I ever acccused of cheating cos the accuracy and reaction were just off the scale.

I would not take ASUS seriously at all. Very low prize money and not a major tournament - I would consider gamescom and quakecon more.

as far as prize money goes in quake nowadays, asus is not quite that bad.

the only letdown is that it's basically an online tournament, and for that alone it can't be taken seriously

It's because of how Rapha's style looks.

No, it's just cause he's American, so people in Europe never see him on servers or hear anything about him outside of tournaments. Hence they basically just hype up who they see around, or who they hear about 2nd hand. The same thing happens as far as general opinions about CTF go too.
