well, you're partially right, having such a third place final makes for a good 'warmup' for the viewers before the grande finale, but for players like cooller, avekkk, cypher, it seems to me that it is unnecessary.

the only good 3./4. decider i've seen so far was cooller-strenx on iem europe last winter, and it was neither the money nor the prestige that made it so great.

Top 3 money doesn't motive certain players, who know that they have almost no chance whatsoever to achieve 1st/2nd or even 3rd place. And why should they feel humiliated for not winning the entire tournament? LOL. They're often facing the best of the best, it's no shame to take 3/4/5/6th place, it's still a good result considering how high the level of skill is now days.

Lets apply this to tennis's Grand Slams / only TOP3 prize distribution / --> Federer and Nadal having 85~90% of the winnings, rest is for Djokovic, Murray and Soderling.

This is just my opinion. The reason you don't see me, or a lot of the older players going to a lot of tournaments anymore is just because it's not possible to combine gaming at top level, and real life with this kind of pocket money. Lets face it. To be a top 30-50 player in the world in this game. You would have to play for years and dedicate a lot of hours to have a chance, if you would start today.

I do agree with the winner/looser example (the mentality) you try to explain, at least parts of it. The winner should get more. But the rest of the top players should get something to be able to continue practice/motivate themselves if he is a top player in the world.

It would be nice, but I don't see this possible in todays 'eSport' that top 12-16 (a good example -> 2005 with PK world tour) would make enough money to support their practice and motivation. Then you would have a double/triple 'pro' player base and have more interesting tournaments.

However. When the total prize purse is small. There is no reason to split the last remaining euro/dollars to further than top positions.
