I get this too and i've seen that it's the case looking at another computer on the same network playing, it's not even a select base of players that say it either; i'm pretty much told it whenever I play. So far as I know all my config settings (snaps, rates, etcetc) are all in order and I can find any reason why it's the case.

Lag meter shows me as having about 30-40 ping constantly yet I look like I'm playing on a U.S/Euro server when i'm playing locally (Australia).

i'd given up trying to fix it a while ago so i'd forgotten that my demos vs bots ARE choppy. it looks as if i'm playing at 30fps or something.

i've got constant 125fps outputting to my monitor running at 120hz, vsync off. i can't understand what could be causing it.

i've tried all sorts of (some retarded) things:

swapping monitor and/or dvi-d cable
disconnecting my second monitor
turning off gpu scaling
setting "multi-gpu performance mode" to use just one gpu (i've got a gtx295 which is basically two gpus bolted together i think?)
using my monitor's native res
using "force vsync off" in my nvidia options
i've obviously wiped my config more times than i can remember too.

i'm going to cry now.

All demos recorded on localhost will come out choppy like this. Remember the g_synchronous clients dilemma in q3? That's what's going on. So this is not indicative of your problem.

I tried some settings with a player who has choppiness, and nothing worked. Not cl_maxpackets, cl_packetdup, or rate. I had timenudge 0 of course.

I really would like to know the cause so I can help these people fix it, it is sooo annoying to play against, and I don't think I should wait until Id implements smoothclients or something : )

I will check my demos, but I would be surprised if they warp. Afaik demos just record the network stream which should be as smooth as the game I see on my screen, right?

in CPMA, many people told me that I was warping badly even though everything looked fine from my POV. On checking the demos however, they were choppy as hell.

an optical booster is probaly broke, and nodoubt BT broke it while rolling out they fibre lines, optical packets degrade without a booster every few miles

same as analog lines, but have lost packets

iirc it has to do with certain ISPs stacking several packets and then sending them at once instead of sending each individual packet immediately and individually

Somebody who has this needs to test another machine on their network, have a friend verify on whatever servers that the choppiness remains or disappears. This way we can more or less rule out the host system as the problem (ideally more than one person do this).

Also what should be checked is the server, if on some servers you do not have any choppiness then we can be sure it is a routing issue. If it happens on every server then it indicates that somewhere early along the hops is the problem.

I don't have high hopes anyone will actually run these tests, but it would be nice to know what _exactly_ causes this.

I got 3 different PC with several different OS installed, and 3 consoles, all does the same effect, it doesn't matter if I plug them into a router or directly into the modem. And its happening on every servers.

At 3am when everybody else is sleeping my net is perfect.. in fact no other isp from my country provide such good net like I get at 3am (only talking about home connections ofc), I ping 26-29 on German servers and I appear super-smooth to others.

There are certain times when my net goes apeshit, so I assume that if too many consumers using the net on "my" node, my packets are throttled in some kind of way.
For example, at Sundays 6-7pm I always start to warp very badly.. but once we had a long weekend when Monday was also a non-working day, and most ppl went on vacation.. that was the only Sunday evening when I had perfect net

I pretty much stopped playing because of this, I don't want to ruin the fun of 7-9 other ppl:(

go back to landline DSL, wifi/max is for uni`s and will never be an equal share of bandwidth, or ISP`s wont be able to use upto 20mbs or whatever the cap is on yours

your problem is a well known side-effect of cable connections coupled with a large enough number of users. not much you can do, your isp sells more lines than they should.

I get warp on Virgin Media even though most of the time i don't see it, it's usually ping spikes :/ On pingtest i usually get 40ms latency to London (I live in London) and 40-50ms jitter.. it sucks.
EDIT: Released and renewed my connection in the router settings and now i'm getting 25ms to london and 15ms jitter.
EDIT: now it's 28ms latency and 17ms jitter, no packet loss either for all the tests..

Since I found a similar thread at Quake Live's official forum regarding this warping issue, I might as well share my version of the problem here:

I experience what seems to be the same problem.

I've actually been experiencing this issue for quite a while, and it appears to only be a problem when I play during the evenings, from after 17:00 (maybe the network traffic reaches it peak at that time, which causes a load on the connection, or something). Too bad that's the part of the day when i usually play.

Same for me, I seem to be "micro-warping" (warping a very short distance but very intense) in front of the other players in a server, without myself noticing it.

My rate is 25000, cl_maxpackets 125, snaps 40. My lagometer looks innocent, although I can see a slightly difference where there are tiny tiny tiny green spikes, almost not noticable, when people are accusing me for warping. This does not necessarily has to do anything with the warping issue itself.

I actually did just talk to my ISP tech support who has tried to find the problem without any good results. My connection seems to work properly without packetloss, jitter, lag etc. and he couldn't see any reasons why I should be experiencing this problem. This was tested at the same time I seem to be warping.

1, Snaps doesn't exists in QL

2, as many (including me) wrote it above, your ISP is selling too many connections on the line your modems belongs to (your house, street, district, etc...)... and when too many ppl is using the net, you just won't get "enough" for a smooth stream.

3, probably svr is also right, but iirc its done by the hardware and not by the admin,(have no idea if admins can or can't alter this behavior)

4, nothing you can do, its up to your isp/admin to give gamers more priority, or its up to you to switch to an isp where you may get an individual dedicated connection which is not shared with torrentwhores and other high bandwidth users

What I don't get is why I feel no problems. If my packet stream is not constant, I should notice something, like my lg that does not hit, or troubles dodging, or whatever, but on my side I did not notice anything. How can such a problem have such asymmetric effects?

the level of misinformation in this thread is astonishing. of course there is no one single answer to what could cause this kind of problem, but stabs in the dark and random attempts at rationalization from a limited perspective do nothing to narrow the question down.

to the deniers, first of all, it is entirely possible to have the game look perfectly smooth on your end, and for everything to check out--your connectivity is good and stable, your latency seems okay and ping reports nicely in the QL scoreboard, you don't have packet loss or CPu/GPU issues, and there are no system interrupts or other network problems causing hiccups that you can readily discern.

I had this problem for about a month or two. I didn't realize I was warping until others finally pointed it out and I assumed at first they were idiots or insane. knowing something about networking stuff, I checked all of the obvious things immediately. my physical connection was fine, my connection to the internet was fine, and my computer(s) were fine. I verified with multiple gateways that there was no suspicious inbound/outbound activity. I verified that I
got full throughput and throughoutput. I verified that there was no packet loss on the line or on the internet. I tested from multiple computers and multiple routers. I tested multiple Quakelive installations. I tested from my wireless network, I tested wired, and I tested wired with different cables. I even re-did my coaxial cabling, "homerunning" the line for my modem and switching out old RG-59 for RG-6. this upped received power level from about -10dBmV to +1dBmV. none of these things, however, helped the issue. it's important to echo what Lorfa said, by the way. as far as I recall, demos recorded locally still have choppiness if you don't use autorecord (effectively enabling g_synchronousclients, which I don't think is actually a configurable variable now). this might not be an indicator of CPU lag or software issues. I think in my case my demos recorded from online games looked smooth when played back, but I honestly do not remember for certain now. just note that it may be deceptive or misleading.

I determined the problem was caused by the netcode. why specifically did it happen for myself and not others? I had awkward jitter. my ping was stable around an average or 40ms, or whatever it would be, but every third or fourth packet or so, it might spike up to 100. there wasn't any packet loss.. just very brief and flittering spikes in latency. the reason this causes warping is, I think, related to the client-side prediction code. irregular updates are apparently enough to throw off the prediction stuff in rather strange ways.

what was the ultimate cause of the jitter, though? I doubted it had anything to do with packet scheduling or shaping or anything of the sort. I'm wise to this because ISPs in my country have increasingly been throttling BitTorrent connections and things of that nature. I know the signs of packet shaping and I'd checked in Wireshark and I didn't find anything out of the ordinary. I'm on a cable modem. I bought the modem I'd been using 10 years ago--it's a DOCSIS 1.0 device. I don't think the specs are relevant, but maybe something in the way it handled forwarding traffic had gone bad. maybe there was a recent update pushed from my ISP to it that afforded this, or maybe it had just gotten old. I bought a new modem and the jitter went away instantly.

at first I thought this jitter was fairly normal and within expectations, and that there was nothing I could do about it. I, however, became more and more suspicious when I discovered that I experienced it from the first hop onward, and that nothin changed when fixing my cabling or even hooking the modem up outside of the house right at the demarcation box. you might want to try this and all of the other things I've suggested if you're perplexed. but it's not guaranteed to solve the issue, as really anything could be happening.

it's part of the docsis technology, they stack several packets, I had the same when i was on docsis 1 and I dont have it anymore.

Update:
My ISP suggested to change my broadband-socket which I connect my modem into. This in order to adjust my transmit level, they said. After the technician changed the socket to a new one my transmit level had been improved. He talked something about a TX-value (transmit level?) and said it should not be above a value of 109. Before it was 115, and after the socket switch it is 107, which he said is a pretty big difference. I've experienced a slightly improvement in the game. I don't seem to warp as much as I did before, although I still warp. My tracert results to servers are alot better than before. However, this did not solve my problem to 100% so I consider changing to another ISP.

TLDR; The problem seems to be at your ISP and its routing, if you experience this kind of problem: Change ISP.

I think I got most of the basic "competitive commands" here, but some are to talk about:
visual cvars: should there be ignorehwgamma and a few tweaks with (map)overbrightbits/vertex light???? might look different on different monitors and some players just don't like the bright style and want huge amounts of contrast between map and enemymodel
hitbeep: I can't recall what the default value is, so I just included mine
leveltimerdirection: some players are already adjusted to the inverted timer, but big minus: bevaviour in overtime
autoaction: shouldn't be a problem usually, but non-admin-IE8 didn't record for me, and there *might* be some problems with slow disks, decreased performance, etc.. that I'm unaware of
screendamage might be advantageous as you know where you're attacked from
lightningimpact: i know of nobody who likes that setting on, but I had it on for some time...
allowtaunt: dunno, some CA guys maybe want it on??
s_ambient: useful for locating mines in CTF
simpleitems/picmip: varies from player to player

point is u shouldn't need to do all this, it hurts the growth of the game. Imagine how benefitial it would be for QL player base if the cfg came with all the 'must have' settings enabled + most of the important adjustments were in the menu.

I use virgin media and yes i warp.....

Virgin media customers in england will get it a lot for a couple of reason.

It is to do with the cable/fibre optic network and the way it works and the upload capacity on line cards at VM's equipment end (the chasis).

Due to the download being fine it appears ok for the user but it warps for others because of the over utilization/congestion on the upstream.

Virgin media is one of the biggest ISP's in the country but now one of the worst for gaming due to the the above problems causing packet loss and latency for most gamers, be it on quakelive, Call of duty, xbox live, PSN etc.

Do not choose VM as your isp if you are a gamer.
