The crosshair movement is calculated by angles and isn't related to the ingame resolution, thus isn't pixel dependant. (unless you're playing with in_mouse -1 - win32, which is dependant on your resolution but only for when the win cursor hits the edge, giving negative acceleration).

Just try a sensitivity at different resolution, it gives the same cm/180° result.

So, as noone claimed it before I say the point where your mouse isn't accurate enough to draw the game world as accurately as possible is the crea barrier. replace pixel skipping with hitting the crea barrier.

The underlying system has nothing to do with the ACTUAL pixels on your monitor. Any time you are going to scale the input, you are going to lose accuracy. Skipping a pixel is just as bad as ignoring a movement.

shape of salmosa sucks as for me. the mouse is inconvenient to hold. and when I put the mouse on the mousepad or pick it up mousearrow moves a little bit on the screen. dont remember I had this problem with deathadder

The only "new mouse" ive considered buying is the Steelseries Kinzu, because it has a very similar shape to the WMO, and I asume it has a sensor that is a million times better compared to the WMO. But again, it is really worth it?

about 2 weeks ago I bought an abyssus, coming from a wmo.
It kind of feels like a better quality wmo, while not having the exact same shape. Also I can't stress enough how much I hate that blue led light, and it looks a bit "too gamer" so it won't be a good thing to use it at the office.

In the end the thing about "gaming" mouses is to buy whatever you want as long as it has a decent sensor.
Wmo is a very good mouse but it feels too cheap. I've said this a million times yet I'll repeat it: the best mouse possible would be a better quality wmo with a dpi changer (a big plus of the abyssus).

it's not about the sensor. The only problem with the sensor is that it's only 400dpi, so it's not even decent for using lcd screens unless you really love stupidly low desktop sens or dig mouse skipping with windows sens above default

Well I used to play 1280x1024 in one game and 640x480 in another but realized quickly that they came out at different sizes. If you use the black borders for aspect ratio 4:3 etc, put it in 1280x1024 and then the same in 1280x960, you realize that the horizontal side is marginally wider. I found this made the picture clearer and actually easier to aim with (but that was because I was used to 640x480 which was a err... unmultiple -derp- of 1280x960)

For some reason, LCD monitors apply some sort of well filter the lowest the resolution you use. I mean, the pixels are not as sharp. It's hard to explain. It's like some sort of cheap anti-aliasing. I've tried 1024x768 and the image is terrible compared to 1280x1024.

as i posted i'm not crazy about the mouse and i don't have much experience with it, but it does the work flawlessly.

shape-wise it differs slightly from a wmo but it is still noticeable. The sides are smaller and it's not as high as a wmo (to this day I put my hand in the exact shape of a wmo lol, leaving a gap between its top part). On the other hand it feels better and the mouse feet are way better than wmo's stock ones

edit: I use a dirty old qck heavy (2-3 years) and no problems so far

What problem do you have in your hand to not being able to use the WMO for everything? It is a perfectly comfortable and ergonomical mouse. How many hours do you spend in your PC daily? Even if you worked with computers, it still wouldn't make sense to get such a mouse "because it's more comfortable". You don't see people at offices, programmers, and so on, using gay looking "gaming mouses". They would use your default ergonomically okay looking Microsoft mouse or similar.

Yes, I wasn't particularly impressed with that aspect of the mouse either. However, I bought it, and since I'm playing with it, it does work pretty much flawlessly and feels much better than the WMO / MS3.0 (Both of which I own and I have been using the ms3.0 since 2002).

I also use the mouse at 450dpi, since you don't really need more. Because the mouse is light and has no negative accel, I have no problems moving the mouse at the lowest, or the highest sens I would want to play with.

It's also really really nice to not have to fiddle with mouse drivers to get it working at 500hz (Which is an issue for windows 7 64bit)m you just put the switch on 1000hz and there it's done.

Mmm I use the WMO at 500hz with the hidusbf app. It's pretty cool since it doesn't need a restart. A button in your mouse to change hz... seems kinda dumb to me, no offense. Why? Unless you like, go to a lot of lan parties and shit, so you wouldn't need the need to install hidusbf.. but other than that? An annoying button that you may end clicking while playing, fucking up the match.

Anyway, should I use 1000hz? I've heard it may end up fucking your usb port or something. Is this true? My computer is kinda decent, a Q6000 with a GA X38 DQ6 mobo. Wouldn't mind some extra 500hz of smoothness but not at the cost of damaging shit up. Are you usually allowed to use 1000hz at lan parties? I remember someone mentioning how 1000hz was not allowed at some event, and stermy had to play at 500hz or even 125hz which is totally crap. I can't play at 125hz anymore, feels terrible.

hidusbf works fine, but because of the unsigned driver thing in Windows 7, you have to go through a long process of getting it sorted out, and has a habit or fucking up if you change the USB port (Which means you have to go through the process again).

Also, hidusbf caused other input devices not to function, such as my wacom pad.

With regards to 1000hz, I'm only using that because there is no 500hz option, it's just 125hz or 1000hz. The difference between 500 and 1000 is only 1ms, and their have been reported problems so I wouldn't try it. It's not a button, but rather a switch at the bottom of the mouse, there is no way to come in contact with it while playing.

Oh yeah, another bad thing about the Abyssus, is the lift off. This is easily fixed with tape at the bottom of the mouse, but it's irritating that you even have to do it. Of course, You just do it once, and I've never even thought about it after that. The lift off is less than the WMO now.

I agree that 125hz is terrible, so weird that we begin to notice these small minute changes over time.

From what i've been reading, I think there is no reason to buy another mouse. I guess I'll stay with the WMO 1.1a. I may even buy another one just in case this one brokes and in the future it starts to get really dificult to get one.

There's no risk of frying anything using 1000hz, some mice simply can't get a stable rate above 500hz ( wmo/ie3.0 comes to mind ), a lot of mobos still can't poll that fast and it sucks a ton of cpu for what's pretty much a placebo.
If I bought a salmosa, the first thing I'd try would be to put the switch on 1000hz ( even though it should work with 125hz too unless they did some voodoo in the mouse itself ) and bump the polling rate the oldschool way to 500hz with usbrate.

I used to use a WMO but I use a Xai now because it fits my hand grip better. Of course the side buttons, better surface, clicks and scroll wheel are a big factor in as well.

The worst part is I even bought into it a tiny bit (but it was more in terms of Sujoy's Mousescore) and got a Deathadder 3G which to be fair, does have all it's fancy gimmicks, but is one of the best sensors and shapes around. Deathadder 3G is apparently awful, original DA however is a brilliant mouse which on a technological level is far better than the WMO, the only downside in my opinion is the weight. My sensitivity in FPS games is typically too low to use a WMO without skipping but for RTS games I always switch to the WMO just because it is lightweight AND comfortable for the kind of movements you need to make.

I think low weight is extremely important.

Good shape, light weight, robust sensor (usually optical), and proper lift off distance.

So far the wmo comes the closest to meeting all of these. Is it perfect? No, but it is very very good.

It could be bested for sure, all the technology is there, but so far no dice. At least I can say that abyssus and the kinzu are interesting 'attempts' to satisfy both market considerations (ridiculous ones if you ask me) and the above criteria.

strictly talking about gaming, my MS 3.0 was 8 years old before i bought salmosa, and its side buttons, both of them, were clicked approx 8 times while playing quake, ever. out of those 8 times, 1 was me trying it out, and the other 7 was just an accident. totally useless.

using a DA3.5 here running at halfed dpi (1800). i didnt bought it because of the dpi but:

*i like the shape that is similar to habu & ie3.0
*it has a long wire (>2m)
*the wire is very flexible thanks to some kinda mesh coating
*the surface is seamless and non-slippy
*its running at 1000hz default, so no need for any tweaks
*there are many firmware upgrades so its up to you wether you want correction features or not
oh and its black.. just like my pad & keyboard so that looks kinda great

that "ultra high precision 3500dpi sensor" bullshit is just the necessary marketing stuff. i bought it cuz of sheer workmanship quality.

How is the lift off distance? Its quite high on my DA 1800. Did they fix this?

still works at 4mm, doesnt work at 5mm
(tested using staples of cent coins: 50c+10c=4mm, 2x50c=5mm)

(note that they had higher liftoff values in 1.05 or older firmware, aswell as vertical corection until 1.22 or so)

Thats quite high.
I solved it by replacing the IR-LED with a red one.
After that, it has the lowest lift off distance of all my mice.
On my qck its lower than with the Xai.

i had a mx510 before that and it had then very same liftoff
and c'mon.. dont try to tell me that having to lift a next-to-nil weight by 5 instead of say 2 is something human brain wont adapt and hand wont able to do.

the whole "omfg too high liftoff" goes back to the time when gamers went from zero liftoff (ballmice) to like 1cm (first opticals) wich obviously was something completly different and thus decreased their performance.

having a mouse with a high liftoff (and btw the DA is not one of em) doesnt mean its bad.. but that you'll perform bad when ure not used to it until your head adapted.

its all such a placebo thing.. i had horizontal correction in my DA and played fine with it until i read about it and was all like "omg u could be so much better".. got rid of it and played like bullshit for the next 2 weeks.
pros using 3-5sens and .05 - .2 accel aint because its "the optimal" thing.. its because they looked at each others config and copied stuff. same goes for ie3.0 and whatnot - its all in your head

And yes, the LOD of a MX510 was also too high for me back then, thats why i put the MX500 internals inside the lighter MX510 shell at that time.,

ofc you can adapt to a high LOD, but a low LOD will be still a noticable advantage over it.

well.. no? why should lets say 2mm be better than 4 in general. thats like saying one can aim better with 40cm/360 than with 30cm. stuff like this sounds logical at first but doesnt work that way. one can adapt to high lod and have the same success as with low one. such minor stuff is extremly easy for our brain to adapt to with a 100% result

The best keyboards obviously don't need flashing lights or extra keys, but the ones used in StarCraft are like $5 a pop, absolutely awful with rubber dome switches. Pretty much any <€10 keyboard you buy in a store will give you similar performance. I use a very similar keyboard for gaming and while there is nothing "wrong" about it, it is impossible to argue that they are any good.

"Good" keyboards aren't those produced by Razer, Steelseries or Logitech, they are the ones made by IBM, Cherry, Filco; they are mechanical, reliable and durable which isn't at all true for the samsung DT35

If companies promoted superior ergonomics above their "superior sensors" it wouldn't be as insulting. Still stupid as hell to spend so much money in a mouse for just some extra buttons. In the cheap-mouse range, there is a big ass variety of forms and sizes. If you still can't find a mouse in that range and you really need to spend 50$+ on a mouse to avoid wrist damage, I would get that shit checked.

well, there arent many cheap mice with the same shape as the expensive ones, and if those expensive ones just so happen to be the best fit/feel for you, theres not much you can do. the technical and physical-whatever sides combined make a good mouse. a comfortable mouse with a crappy sensor and 2 buttons wouldnt really be that good, whereas a really uncomfortable mouse with 9001dpi would sell better, but not that well. the more expensive mice have more creative/different shapes than the cheaper ones.

i dont think many people would buy a $50+ mouse just for comfort unless they could get it for free, or really cheap, and it felt really good. a lot of pros use crappy mice, because they feel the best. tweaking your config makes up for a lot of the dpi-whatever.

The DA for example is technologically superior to the WMO and certainly won't get outperformed by said mouse. Just because some "competitive gaming mice" are trash doesn't mean they all are. For some it is impossible to use the WMO because it skips at high speeds/low sensitivities.

There are lot's of people reporting negative acceleration problems and other oddities @ 1000hz.

Never had a single problem with my WMO @ 500hz, ever. Low sens or high sens.

Just read the ESR mousescore, the wmo @ 500 hz starts having negative accel around 1,55 m/s.
It's fairly easy to hit that speed with sensitivities lower than 20 cm/180°.

That gotta be a ridiculous low sens. Also, I use accel, so I flick the mouse around to move, like most russian players.

IMO 1.1 is such an underestimated alternative beside of the WMO epihany @ ESR. I know it's the beloved mouse in the quake scene but why is there no need for side buttons in quake? Apart of duels u need more than your weapon binds on keyboard. Not to forget you can browse the internet so easily without mouse gestures. WMO doesnt have side buttons. 3.0 side buttons kinda suck and its feet have too much friction. 400dpi is not enough for my high sens and res. Atm I use DA 1800. You can get a brand new DA V2 for $60AUD so its not expensive.

It is ridiculous that some of these mice cost more than a computer motherboard. Same with the gaming keyboards. Tons of this is because of marketing genious, you do not need to spend over 90 bucks on a fregen mouse. I was stupid enough to buy the logitech g9 (not that its a bad mouse) but I didn't need to. I will never buy a highend mouse again or a keyboard, since my g15 keyboard has sticky keys after only 2 years (my old hp pavilion keyboard still works with no stickiness 8 years!). Marketing ploy to try to steal your money and using the pros to try to convince people "you can be pro too if you use razer".

I used a WMO for a very long time until they suddenly stopped selling it here. I used a 3.0 for about two years and while it was very good, it was a tad too big and heavy for my hands. So I got myself an Abyssus and it's pretty good. Not too expensive (about 25 USD if converted) and small and light.

I don't hit any better or worse with it but the shape is nice enough.

because his cfg when he switched to a da was EXACTLY like his wmo ( exact same values ), because the modifications made later on when he switched to abyssus ( or whatever the model is ) were basically to replicate his wmo settings ( 450vs400ish dpi ) and because we're not complete retards believing razer's bs and that a player of such caliber would completely change his mouse settings to please his sponsor.

I'm using 450. At higher DPI and/or lower polling rate, I noticed some jitter. Basically 450 dpi and 100hz are the settings that work as they should on my pad (Mantis speed).

Funny how fanboys ignore that wmo+imo have negative accel too. Perfect control goes only up to 1.55m/s. I can't play 30+cm/360 or I'll hit those speeds very often. Playing with low cl_mouseaccel like 0.1 makes it usable though.
Its just that you get used to it. Strenx for example, very good aimer but with his low sens I'm sure he goes beyond his kinzu perfect control speed often.
Sad truth is, there isn't a perfect gaming mouse yet. WMO (negative accel), MX518(prediction), DA(high lod)... its about which flaw is least annoying to you. Not even mentioning ergonomics..
Some expensive mice like g9x or xai are very good.. if you can adept to their flaws (positive accel in this case) you'll have a mouse superior to the wmo: working mousewheel, sidebuttons, better cable, lower lod and the ability to use higher sens with high resolution display. You may not need this but others do.

Nothing funny, and everyone agrees with the 30-35cm/360 threshold.
Keep in mind that most people here play quake and most people using lower sensitivities would still use accel even if the mouse didn't start to crap out.

there is no direct correlation, but people are more inclined to hit that with a sens in the 30's (cm/360°).

it largely depends on your playingstyle though, long swipes across the pad vs. lots of picking up and re-centering.

1,55m/s is from esreality 2007 mousescore, ~30cm/360 is my own experience @ qck heavy and quake live + quakeworld.

all great mice no doubt but all 125hz stock which, at that polling rate, is next to fucking useless. So you have to OC your USB to 500hz or what have you in order to really get the mouse to perform. Even though it's super-easy to OC your usb polling rate, most people probably don't want to do that. So they buy a mouse that comes stock at 500+hz or has the options in the driver to easily switch between polling rates (like me and the g5/g500).

I like the 3.0 a bunch, but I never felt comfortable taking USB-OC software to lan tournaments just to have an admin come over and be like "hax, your disqualified". Although I guess it's sort of common for pros to OC the usb to 500hz at tournaments, because I know they aren't hitting shit at 125hz.

They are all allowed to OC their USB, otherwise Cooller, Rapha, Jibo, Fox, Stermy, Toxjq, and everyone else who uses/used the WMO would have been disqualified.

Also, why do you care about LAN tournaments. Only like 15 people play at QL LANs anyway.
