I actually think the relatively high dispersion is what makes this weapon interesting also tactically. As guard said it feels overpowered from far distance, imagine if it was more precise, say like mg, it'd be way too killer.

If I recall correctly, there was a system when firing CPMA ssg - bullets always spread with a certain pattern. So maybe tweak it somehow like that? Could that be called random afterwards?

Why do we need more weapons? The balance is fine as it is. Every weapon has it's use.

I think the problem is you'd like to fill niches rather then try something new in the game and see how that works. Chaingun is special in a way that it's a rapidfire weapon with relatively big bullet spread and not a weak weapon like MG. Perhaps it would work perfectly on some maps.. who knows.

Well, the chaingun is from Q2 :P. And the "recent" replacement for the chaingun is... the lightninggun.

Both weapons work the same way, overall, along with the machinegun. So, although the chaingun might be a fun & deadly weapon to use, it's still too similar to the MG/LG to be a real interesting addition to the gameplay, especially the gameplay balance. So let's say that it's mainly a "gimmick" weapon, for fun.
Also, it has far too large spread and the fact that you have to wait some time before it reaches its full firerate makes it kind of inappropriate for vq3/ql competitive gameplay. It worked great in q2 because of the slow rockets, slightly different movements, slow but strong rail etc etc... So let's say that it was/it is good for competitive q2 gameplay, but since ql becomes closer and closer to cq3/cpm/q4, i don't think that the chaingun would work very well in "competition". And if you tweak it to make it more balanced/interesting, you realize that it become evens closer and closer to the MG/LG, so what the point really ?

I don't really see it that way. MG and LG are two different weapons and therefore it won't go closer to either of it but more like stays in the middle. I also think there's a bit of ssg in the chaingun cos of the bullet spread.

Yes it will stay in the middle, and that's the main problem :).

We already have the plasma which can be used at all ranges/any situations quite effectively but which is also very hard to use (probably the hardest weapon to use effectively) and... not random :)
And i don't know any other weapon that fires plasma bullets tbh :P

Well I tell you plasma in fact works like rocket launcher - if fires projectiles (and it's not important if it looks like blue cloud or rocket). Those projectiles differ in parameters like damage, spleshdamage, firerate and speed and of course graphics makes it looks so different to human eye :) But I believe PG still found place in QL and its usefull and the most suitable wep at times.

There are more differences between PG & RL than between MG & CG or even CG & LG.

In q2 you didn't have any pg, nor any lg, and the weapons def for the rail/rl etc were different than in q3, that's mainly why the chaingun was a "must have" weapon. It worked (and still does) great, it was a nice addition to the gameplay, but in q3/ql ? I don't think so, unless you want ql to become "gimmicks land" aka unreal tournament :). Nothing wrong with UT, it's actually a good deathmatch game, but imo quake is more interesting for ->competition<- mainly cuz of its simplicity & balance.
But if you want to have fun and don't care much about competition etc, then ofc you might have more fun in UT (altho that when you're a casual, quakelive/q3 is better because it's more simple, easier to understand and play when you're noob at deathmatch fps).

There was a hyperblaster in Q2 which was similar to plasma gun but more shitty :); Yeah I understand what you mean with the UT comparison, I really don't know if it'd turn into 'gimmicks land' game, but if we suppose so, maybe more fun is exactly the thing, what the game needs to attract some noobs.

On a sidenote there was also a beam gun in Q2 mission pack which pretty much resembled LG way more than chaingun did.

now I'm thinking about which mod. At the moment ctf maps with chaingun are terrible. Ca would become even more random than what it is now (rockets + focus one person, gg)

I can only think of a pro ca server with the option of adding chaingun. That will also attract people from q2 and other quakes, which seems to be id's approach from last patch, if some other features are available such as double jumps (more height than chain jumps) and some q2 maps.
Even then it won't be a considerable addition since we have lg already, but meh.

For me, I didn't play Q2 or Q3:TA. I was too busy having fun with q1 when q2 came out and with q3TA, I think I might not have been playing the month it came out/was popular. :P

Having not played those two games, or have any interest at all to play them, I don't see where the CG or NG fit into the q3/qlive arsenal. And the matches I've seen from q2 using the CG I find boring.

I'd much rather see nailgun in more maps, at least it has an interesting weapon dynamic to it (bouncing off walls) and is far from overpowered or easy to use :)

I think nailgun should be like super nailgun from quake 1, but with the bounce abilities. Just shoot it at the floor so it flies up into a guys face, and could have some knockback.

Maybe prox mines should have a trigger. Like you press +button5 to explode them. So when you pick up a 5 pack, you can toss them in air and explode them at people. Imagine that shit, your teammate rj's up and you toss a prox mine in air and explode it to help them double rj, and they had a prox mine also stuck to them before hand meaning that is double air rocketjump.

Which would be awesome. + fighting guys by tossing mines at them and exploding it would be sick.

And mines explode if ANYONE goes near it, teammate or foe. So you can piss off your team if you spam it everywhere.

Imagine 5 prox mines hidden under armor, then 200/200 guy picks it and the mines kill the careless guy instantly ... Is that not powerful enough? You would still make improvements to it? :) But a hand granade, exploding one at time, with the ability you described sounds just fine!
