If they're picking two games from each category, I'd say that CS1.6 and QuakeLive are probably the most probable options.

You'd think COD but that's two team-games in the lineup and CS1.6 is just a ton more popular competitively. WCG doesn't have an FPS duel/deathmatch title so QuakeLive fits the bill

CS1.6 is still extremely popular competitively. I'd be hard to ignore it. I didn't say they were picking two games, but if I think about it, the previous WCG's had 2 fps titles - last one was CS1.6 and Crossfire iirc and Crossfire is basically just a foreign CS1.6. This is also when COD4 and MW2 was already around, so they had the option to add that but chose to basically go with a copy of CS1.6

I obviously wasn't talking about cs. Crossfire isn't just a copy of cs if it's the game I'm thinking about, it's the Asian version of it that's popular there, and WCG's all about Korea. Or was it special force?

Yeah it's the Asian version of it, but CS1.6 is still hugely popular in Asia as well, so that's a bit meh :P

Not sure on the numbers, but I think CS1.6 has the most people playing it at present. COD7 I could easily see if they were doing it as a console title. Dunno how the PC holds up but I doubt so considering all I hear about patches and cfg fixes.

mw2 was largely ignored because there were no dedicated servers, I think black ops has them, but I don't know what the cod community is doing.

I think games that are in beta stages or not released are not allowed to be put in the lineup for WCG, which is why SC2 wasn't put in the last WCG because although it was available, it was in beta.

QuakeLive was never put in because it was in beta (for a fucking long time at that)

Can't remember how it worked, but basically country pays for each slot they want in WCG which is fought out in qualifiers.

So for example, Sweden wants three CS1.6 enties. They hold a WCG-Sweden Qualifier where the top3 get through to the Grand Finals along with other nations.

Can be a bit problematic if one 'country' doesn't want to shell out for more then one entrant. Sweden usually puts out but nations like Russia wouldn't so much

It's basically like that. Every local partner chooses which games he wants to hold a qualifier for and can pick a maximum of two players/teams for each of them to send to the grand finals.

They pay a fee for each player that covers hotel, food, etc (last year it was 1000 euro iirc).

Any way, organising a QL qualifier on LAN will be a pain in the ass, much more than a SC2 one, and that's reason enough not to pick it.

I don't know about the last ESWC, but in previous years it was a similar system except that local partners also had to pay a license fee of around 10.000 euro to be able to hold a qualifier.

COD might be a famous series but Black Ops' player base should be talked about once the buggy MP is patched up by Trey Arch, let alone roll it out for a tournament with prize money. They are better off using COD4 Promod. Medal of Honor' MP is bollocks.

I say 1.6 and QL. 1.6 has a good number of active professional teams/players along with QL. If not QL (zillionth LAN excuse), COD4 should replace it. Apart from that SC2 sounds good.

what issue does capcom have with esports events or organisers?

they would pick up SF4 just because it's popular now and take advantage, when in the last 10 years they haven't contributed anything to the competitive fighting game community who struggled, survived and grew entirely on its own.

also their events would cannibalize the tight schedule of the community tournament circuit, ran and attended by dedicated people (some of them held for well over 10 years). if any of these grass roots tournament organizers are hurt and disband, when the SF4 wave of popularity washes out and WCG/MLG drops the game, it will be very hard to bounce back to how things were (the Quake scene might be a relevant example).

lastly, the fighting game community is very colourful, rowdy and genuine (coming from the arcade culture), it doesn't need unnecessary censorship and interference from corporate shills.

Capcom doesn't have an official stance on this, but they have people in key positions who were once community members and know that their success has nothing to do with mainstream "esports" businesses.

but who knows this time around, maybe they will feel the fighting games ecosystem is well established by now (with major events drawing very impressive numbers: Evo 2009 - capped at 1024 players, Evo 2010 - 1700+ players, the rest average around ~300 players) and they will let them use it...

SSFIV is less popular than many other FTG in Japan already.

yeah, of course.. Japan is the Mecca of fighting games, also SSF4 is not out in arcades yet (release date is this december)
however, the western scene always gravitated around Capcom games which had the fiercest competition.

The most popular FTG in Japan is Guilty Gear series for many years... Not well receied by europe/US market though...

actually the most popular is Tekken6 (almost every month on #1 according to arcade operators in the last 1-2 years), but yeah Guilty Gear is up there
