there's also footage on YouTube from the B3 Alpha2 tournament (1996, the precursor to Evo). it's in really bad VHS quality but it is watchable if you're into that. i think that year some Kuwaitis showed up and the Americans were like WTF.

anyway, i only wish i was older in that arcade period.. i didn't really understand Street Fighter back then. bootleg cabinets didn't have the special moves listed on them, so i could barely grasp things like charge moves or general mechanics.. nevermind something like combos, crossups etc.

i got really into MK where characters had the same basic moveset (apart from special moves), SF was always confusing because every character was radically different (apart from Ryu, Ken ofc) and motions where difficult or time based, no predetermined dial combos either.. and of course (at that age) the gore and shock value in MK was far more interesting than the comics/cartoony graphics of SF

Its basically a glitch in the game where a character can execute moves before the opponent can come out of block frames.

Blocking specials in SF takes energy, , TBH situations like that are usually agreed not to be abused as its very hard to do and you're obviously trying to do it, but in america they play with less honour than in the UK and Japan so its not surprising some of them were building their games around it.

Try that shit down my way and you'de get ousted pretty quick or physically verbally abused.

Just becuase there is a flaw and explot in something ,doesn't mean you have to abuse it. But this is the country where everyone sues everyone for stupid shit "because they can" so its not surprising.

also there's no honor "in-game", in the end it's a video game with clear rules defined by gameplay. if you can't take it, adapt and overcome.. don't fall back on outside rules (excuses)

Yes but tomo was probably one of the best players in the world at that time.
Using such people to justify something in a game is really stupid, becaue even fellow pros said they were victim of it.

Secondly, something that serious would NOT have been allowed by the game devs if they had known.

If you then choose to use it its not cool or clever or justified, it just means you'll do anything to win. but when you rely on such exploits to win a game you only cheat yourself because if its not an intentional mechanic of a fighter and its a sreally serious one, come the next version, you'll simply start losing bacause you built your whole game around unsustainble gameplay that no longer works as they removed it.

i understand what you're saying.. some things anger me a lot in these games (hello 3rd Strike Chun!), but i get over it because there's no winning argument here (and i can't really change your mind on it either).

the reality of the game is what it is.. people will always try to get ahead, it's very hard to draw a line especially when most of this stuff sits in a grey area and the game developer doesn't support you officially

thankfully there's no such nonsense in SSF4 (apart from some matchups, but hey no game of this nature will ever be perfect), even less in SSF4 Arcade Edition (hi Seth nerfs!)

i only wish Capcom fixed some of the obvious stuff in the past games.. but remember those were the birth pains of the genre (the technology in those times made development and patching very costly, arcade boards came with built-in ROM chips and all that..)

only scrubs complain about chun. this is whats agreed upon amongst all the better jap and us players (not including kuroda ofcourse)

Its not, if SF4/SSF4 was a balanced game then give me one solid reason why capcom would implement a blind select system into the sequel?

The only reason they did this is because people counterpick characters, to exploit weaknesses in the matchup design they they just can't balance with brain/ability.

If the game was balanced there would be no need to input blind selects as every character would have a winnable matchups so there would be no incentive to counter pick.

As you can see, its not a balanced game, and laughably, guile went from low tier in SF4 to top tier based on nothing more than faster sonic boom speed and a super, now waht what does that tell you about the what is needed to be successful at this game?

Spamming sonic booms and a super and little else is all that's needed to turn someone from shit to god tier. (and I'm a guile player so hardly biased)

its not what it used to be, for me super turbo was the pinnacle, yeah it had super and some god characters, but for a game made in 93, no fighting game ever stood that test of time that that did. Or ever will.

a game of this nature (asymmetric gameplay) with so many characters (the majority of them unique) will always have "bad" matchups.

that SSF4 tier list on EventHubs is for the most part orientative. it's based on limited data and personal judgements. there's no general consensus on most matchups this early in the lifespan of the game.

even though, notice most matchups fall in the 6-4 and 5-5 category (556) and a few matchups are considered 7-3 (39). that's not by any stretch set in stone (as things evolve), but there's only 6% really disadvantageous matchups in the game.

also if you look at the total numbers you'll see 22 (out of 35) characters above the average threshold (170 = 34 characters x 5). moreso if you look at the differences throughout the Total column, you'll see very compact tiers.

that's incredibly balanced if you've followed other games in the past to compare stats with.

the numbers in that table might not be accurate, but the reality of the game shows that most characters can win and the few bad matchups you have for your main character can be resolved by playing a secondary and be prepared for them.

its still a good game, but there's only so much respect I can give a game that rewards the opponent with a free ultra for losing.

I can't tell you the amount of times i have spend 30-40 second chipping my opponent down to take 50% of their health, only for the game to reward them with an ultra which then requires them to land ONE SINGLE MOVE (or tag it onto a retarded juggle) to claw back all that damage. its a broken ratio but one that is needed for todays gamers otherwise they get steam rolled by old players or don't have the drive to play. Why do you think so few players play quake? its too much of a game for the masses.

ST was not so bad as you had to earn the super by using special.
in SF4 it can be charged quickly by absorbing attacks and getting beat up.

it become a bit like mariokart, the powerups and catchup code can decide on a winner.
