Right click desktop -> screen resolution -> advance settings->
Select monitor tab and check refresh rate.
If your screen is 120hz you will able to get 120hz.

will check when i get home, phoned msi and they said it's standard for a laptop screen. All i'm noticing is, is strange ghosting when i play ql... is that some other issue?

According to that link your notebook does not have 120hz.
Its just HD 16:9 LED screen. That doesnt mean it has 120hz.

I think the exact same laptop was used during the the msi beat finals? If so, it is capable of 120hz - every laptop is even if it only has vga output.

okay, you misunderstand a thing here. Obviously, the screen of the laptop is locked at 60hz because it is a "laptop screen" or LCD and they usually dont get more than 60hz. At least, I haven't stumbled across anything different - 2ms/120hz tft laptop screens would maybe be the future.

Anyway, your crt isnt locked at 85. First, it depends on your resolution, and secondly on the OS you are using. It is really easy to force higher refresh rates in winxp but in w7 it is a bit trickier. Mine does 120hz (800x600). I've got another one at home that does 140hz at the same resolution.

Thirdly, the EDID of the Monitor "locks" the actual hz rate which however can be circumvented by removing pin #12 from the vga cable - this usually is the only way to get 100hz and above in w7.

And 85hz is not fine. It gives you eye cancer. :)

it's watchable for they eyes, but in gaming worse than a 75 Hz CRT due to ghosting etc.

yes, exactly. 60hz on LCD's with tft technology obviously are much more appealing to the naked eye than compared to crt's with 85 hertz. Although both might different in their hz count crt's will always look shit unless you get above 100hz. Ask noctis, he can even tell the difference between 100 and 140. I can between 100 and 120.
