I can't remember if it one of those that can delivery 120 Hz only in its native resolution, but if it is, than 120 Hz should be working with this.

yeah

you can make sure by checking the osd info tab (or whatever it's called, don't have mine here atm. basically press the menu button and up two times iirc). If it says 120hz there when in game it's putting out 120hz, if not it's not.
also, depending on driver settings etc, it might only do 120hz in 1680x1050 as vib said. Try setting it to that and see if it works and then go from there if you want to set different resolutions/aspects.

1st

Right click on desktop-> Screen resolution -> Advanced settings

select monitor tab -> Make it to 120hz -> Apply - OK.

2nd

Right click on desktop -> Nvidia control panel ->

Then select -> Adjust desktop size and position ->
Click on 'Use my display's built in scaling' Then apply.

These things will work if you have windows 7 and Nvidia card.

Ati cards has problem to support 120hz I heard.
You dont need to change in game resolution such as r_mode -1

Then in game try Alt + tab or q3 minimizer and do step 1 again.

i have an ati hd4770 and i dont have problems on supporting 120hz, actulally it supports 120hz at every resolution. The problem you may be talking about is the low 2d clocks sometimes causing corruption in 2D mode on 5k series, that can be easly fixed.

i took to screenshots, one at r_mode 16 and other at r_mode 21 and they respectivily report 1280*800 and 1680*1050. This may sound a noob question but, isnt de size of the in game map architecture dependent on the resolution, i mean with a lower resolution shouldnt things look bigger? i have mesured the size of one of those archs, and they have exactly the same size at diferent resolutions, but at lower resolution it just looks worst, with more aliasing etc...

the map looks bigger at a low resolution like 800x600 or 1024x768 because you are trying to play with a 4:3 resolution on a 16:10 monitor, hence everything is being stretched to fit the whole screen

you could as well play with 1600x1200, also a 4:3 resolution, but a high one, and it would get stretched too.

im not refering to that....im playing at 16:10 1280*800 = 1.6....

All 16:10 images will look the same

In fact, as you change resolution/aspect ratio (e.g. 4:3 @ 1024x768 to 16:10 @ 1680x1050) the only thing that'll change in quake live is the amount of view on the horizontal plane that you can see. The part you're then probably confusing is FOV, FOV in quake live does not change with resolution, therefore you won't ever notice a difference unless you start changing that. In quake 3, images did not scale properly when you went to widescreen because it was not supported properly, therefore many people had to adjust fov values using a calculation to get the "same view" (e.g. 100 fov in 4:3 was about 111 fov in 16:10 if i remember correctly). Infact, many still do that today in Quake Live and that's what i like to call "placebo".

Thanks for the help guys. I'm at my parents for Christmas dinner at the minute so I can't do anything yet. I have an ATI card, can't remember which, I'll have look when I get home. I was hoping to run 640 at 120hz.

Why not just use 1680x1050? Or if you really want 4:3 make a custom resolution of ? x 1050

Sensitivity can feel different at higher resolutions. Especially when you use a 3.0 or WMO, you can run into pixel skipping.

Not really. You only need more than 400 DPI if you play in Full HD (1920x1080). To be exact ~415 DPI are still enough.

A mouse with 450 DPI will be ok for almost all setups.

Exactly, and that's why those players might use low resolutions, because high sens on low dpi on low res is fine.

Or buy a "high" DPI mouse. 800 DPI is enough for pretty much every setup in combination with a high sens.

Why the low res? That would suck, you can now run at any res at 120hz.

Ok, I'm only getting 60hz. My card is a ATI 4670. 120hz is enabled in the display settings but the monitor is reporting 60hz when I use the menu button and scroll to information.
Idealy I'm wanting to keep my quakelive as it was with aspect ratio 4:3 and 640 X 480 res but at 120Hz.
I'll have a play around but in the mean time if anyone can help me out I'd be very greatful. Thanks

I've set the desktop res to 1680 X 1050 and it's now putting out 120hz. I still want to achieve 4:3 at 640 X 480 and 120hz in Quakelive though.

Remove monitor drivers (not required), restart pc, download the latest ATI drivers, restart pc.

That should fix it.

Thanks, I'll give that a try. I can run quakelive at 1680 at 120hz. I'll update the drivers to see if that enables me to run the lower res and different aspect ratio at 120hz
