there's a project called quake2 live for q2 obviously. I checked today and seems it's dead.

is it really too difficult to implement? The feature we like the most is the web interface so with a double click to an image you connect to existing servers and so on. In the end it's a good looking server browser and nothing more.

edit: There's no need for accounts or to track stats etc. The only side feature I like is a friend list.

quake live should have been the best of all quakes + some of the good new ideas esr had in you-know-what-thread-about-quake-zero. but they thought they'll just keep it all for quake 5, which'll anyway never see the day because ql is a failure, because ql isn't what it should have been

they are going in the right direction though but too slowly. It took 2 years to get q2dm1, double jumps and aircontrol, which was badly implemented.
If it wasn't for the aircontrol issue then the most important thing missing are maps in order to have at least some remembrance.

on the other hand I do recall someone post here a screenshot with pmove commands and there was aircontrol there.

It was called airacceleration, you can open a /devmap and play with it the cvar is called /pmove_airaccel.

I don't want to go around pointing fingers, I know that I've played some games in the past that weren't exactly great but the community was friendly, tight and generally awesome, always accepting new blood etc.

well the community could implement a website like the quake live website for qw, tbh., but would anyone play it? maybe if there was a free version of qw, but I believe the qw community still needs a free playermodel to be able to offer the game for free, if the game is not free, it won't attract any newbs I guess ... I mean who wants to pay for a 15 year old game ...

personally, i would play qw all the time if it was easier to find matches, especially at a specific skill level. a "quakeworld live" site would be ideal for that. btw, isn't half the work done already with http://stats.quakeworld.nu/ ? could be pretty big imo

for a match system to work, you first need a big playerbase, I am not sure if this playerbase exists in QW ... also every qw player would need to use the website interface of the qw-live site ... you could start with a very limited version, which just pairs 2 user accounts against each other and connects both of the players to a server on which they have agreed through a plugin, and maybe the webserver could keep track of the scores on this server ... but of course, if you want to make it right, a much more complex system is needed for verification and also for stats, that is the gameservers must communicate with the webservice, e.g. you need also to enhance the servermods ... it's possible to implement this, no question ..., but first you need people for the web interface, and also for the mods on the servers, etc. ... needs a lot of time ...
and also needs quite some expertise on the developerside concerning webprogramming, modding and architectural stuff ...
but it's really nice programming project ...

Don't feel that big difference between 20ms and 40ms. I mean I can feel it but I still can hit 35lg and 60 rail :x. Though everything above 60 feels really shit like in any other game :P

If QL was QW then it'd have at most, half the people currently playing QL. There are tons of games out on the market today. It's not like it was in the mid-late nineties where there weren't that many good FPS games to go to.

Yeah I really shouldn't say good. But for most people, other FPS games are good enough and don't take the skill level/learning curve of a game like QW. That is a big enough deterrent for most people these days. They'd rather play something else because it's easier.

I used to like cpm/qw like gameplay more than vq3 but these days I don't really enjoy QW when speccing and I find almost every match boring.

Imo Quake Live/Quake 3 is far more entertaining to watch (and play).

you have air-control/bunny-hopping in both QW and CPM, but it's not exactly the same air-control.
you have strafe jumping in both VQ3 and CPM, but it's not exactly the same strafe jumping.
you have fast weapon switches in both QW and CPM, but here again, it's not exactly the same fast switch.
same for the rail in VQ3 & CPM.

So, you just can't put cpm & qw in the same bag, because those 2 gameplays, although being similar on some aspects, are still different and don't have the exactly the same approach of a good & balanced competitive gameplay.

no QW bunny-hop has stronger acceleration, and you can "circle" the target while moving, with some practice. basically you're not forced to make a flickshot to the left or right to hit your opponent while moving like in cpm. It's a bit less about "tunnel" movements if you know what i mean.

and about strafe-jumping, cpm player accel is stronger than vq3's one, in many aspects. Also, you can't do half beat and all these "expert" strafing technics in CPM. Mainly cuz when you have both bunny hop and strafe jump you have to make some sacrifices in others aspects of the movements. But still not necessarily a bad thing, actually i would say that it's even the opposite.

And btw, cuz in cpm there is the combination strafe+bunny, you don't move the same way as in QW or VQ3, thus your execution isn't exactly the same.

When you bunny in cpm, you have to keep your mouse in the direction you're bunny-hoping. If you od too large movement to the left or right, you can lose your speed drastically. While in QW you can still maintain your speed and acceleration by inverting +left with +forward, for example (or something like this, can't remember exactly).

I had this idea a long time ago, that they should add all 3 quake games to Quakelive, to sum up all the quake experience, but since they can't even fully realize just one, it's pretty useless to speculate on 3;)

people would be crushed even worse then they are now, especially since you can be spawn killed quite easily. Nowadays, people are incredibly ADD and impatient, no way would they stick with Quakeworld. If it happened and I was wrong, hey, I would embrace it. As someone in the USA, barely anyone plays QuakeWorld. Europe is pretty lucky to have some sort of scene still that has several active servers. US has one FFA server that is randomly active.

haha lol? Do you really mean that? Well, I think you just have shit aim then because shaft is certainly the weapon that is easiest to hit with. Also, in terms of consistency, it is usually the weapon that is the most stable (although this may vary once again depending on the frequency of use and the opponent and what mode you play. :D)

However, I still think that if you choose your moments wisely, shaft is very effective. You cannot except that you hit 50% when someone else is using rocket launcher negating your all so good shaft work - also making it harder to lock him when he swoops you around due to massive rl splash.

Rocket launcher is really easy to play with at the moment. Increased travel speed makes air rockets basically a must in every match - not to speak of direct rockets.

Rail on the other hand is kind of unstable for me too but I have never been a good railer. abso, sil and juv may beg to differ - their rail is usually superb - even stermy/strenx does not complain. You just have to be extremely accurate with rail and also hope that the hit gets registered :D

QL movement is certainly easier than compared to Quake World where, if you have bad movement, you are basically lost. Hey, in Clan Arena you don't even need movement - I see tons of people that can't strafe jump properly yet jump in your face with a rocket. BAM! ez :/

I would like something inbetween - I think recent changes (chain jump) have made the QL movement a bit more smooth and more advanced but it would be nice to see a few more addition so you could actually pull off some nice movement combinations that give you an edge over your opponent. Because at the moment, good movement gives you hardly an advantage.

I'm personally not really a fan of QW shaft, cuz there's basically no way to dodge it, unless you're ultra stacked or moving at 53467347643 ups. Otherwise it's mainly a rape weapon... Just like QW in fact...

What I mean by shafting is impossible is that if im in practice mode against a bot, the shaft behaves completely different to when im online with just 22 ms. It's not about how the bot is dodging and moving, it's about how I have to take a completely different approach to using the weapon because it doesn't hit where I point. In quakeworld I don't use truelightning (but even if I did it would be okay because of antilag) and i'm able to predict the lightning beam very well, but in ql I feels it's very difficult with 22 ms compared to 0 ms where I feel I dont have to predict but just aim

I just recommend that you play more then. Ask heartless, he might be able to tell you how to shaft properly.

How long have you been playing Q3 and QL in total?

I have a similar thing with rail, I swing between 40 and 70 percent. I probably need to lower my sens or something.

QW, although being fast & spectacular, is for retarded grunts & spammers. Not saying that all QW are retarded, actually and strangely enough, it's the opposite, i would say that most of the veteran QW players are quite smart. But their main problem is that they basically failed to adapt to something slower and more balanced, perhaps also a bit more technical. Not saying that QL requiers more skill than QW, actually both games are skilled games in their own ways, you have on one side a game where skilled players are always playing on crack, usually spamming nades endlessly, doing crazy airmoves, spawnraping like crazy, and on the other side you have a game where people are used to pretty much calculate every move they're doing.
I personally prefer balanced gameplay, as long as it's not slower than Q2 and not as 'tactical' as CS (well, in reality i doubt that CS is more tactical than Q3... tbh i think it's a myth).

If you're a true hardcore & oldschool "extremist" fps player, you might stick to Q1/QW or even doom2, otherwise Q3/QL is probably a better choice. If you're a perfectionist and you're not afraid of death, then you might try CPM.

Anyways, all this blind love towards QW is retarded, open your eyes and try to think deeper, also try to play as much fps (from 95 to 2010) as you can, even on consoles, and you'll then realize and find quite a lot of flaws in QW's gameplay.

qw has substantial differences with other fps games. That's why it will always have dedicated communities and ql won't.

In a lesser extent the same happens with q2, painkiller and multiplayer doom.

If we do get a Quake 5, I think it could be an amazing game in terms of gameplay. Making it like a balanced QW could really get some nice competition going.

Yes please. Quake has always been goth-like with a dark mood. Then Quake 4 came with its futurist look. Not only did the map textures look horrible but even the weapon models looked so gay with their laser-pewpew theme. Was really disappointing.

quake1 doesn't have a true sequel. Quake2 and 3 are not related with the first one, and quake4 is q2's sequel.
The very first quake players were not disappointed with quake4 only. They were also with quake2 and 3.

I think it's time id goes back to its roots instead of trying to copy or merge with what's popular on the industry right now, like they have been doing since 1997.
Since then the only time they tried to be different (like they were before) they developed quake3, or actually should I say true to what they really want to develop.

The departure of John Romero may have to do why quake sequels lack the original atmosphere.
