Not the best example but you can see Rapha jump into the corner instead of going straight to the exit and eating a direct rocket, so dont always go straight for the exit.

In direct battles hold one strafe key then switch to the opposite one for a split second the straight back the original, That usually makes them miss their shot.

Nice one. I like it, because it's in the heat of the battle after Rapha is hit then bounced in mid-air. Cooller's second rocket would have hit him for sure, instead Rapha goes in the corner + he hits a rocket immediately.

Nah, I play +forward and I end with the highest score pretty much every game. It mostly irritates me that the other people play in such a boring way. Such as the whole team camping a room on dm7 after 3 minutes when they are leading 5 - 0.

not trying to claim to be the best but i think i can say a few useful tips as i have played quite an amount of CA so i know the play in that game mode.

Now, dodging can be seen as something very particular per weapon. Since RL/LG/RG are most used weapons in CA i'll just try to explain the way i dodge. (The following examples are based on 1v1 situations as 2v1 and worse situations are basically about position dis/advantage. Also, health and armor are definetly a deciding factor ofcourse! (i'll say so when it is, imo))

RL _situation_:
depends on: distance between you and enemy, placement of the initial rocket and your current position (of the initial rocket).

Depending on who shoots initial rocket: (due to who sees who first) if your's a hit (to his feet or a facial one), you can dodge his easier as his second rocket will most likely will be the opposite as to where he missed his first, it's not guaranteed but since you have him with his back 'against the wall' his first thought to shoot the second rocket will most likely be to correct his first rocket -> opposite direction.

if you are bounced in the air, well: 90% of the time you are dead in CA.

if you both miss then you could move as i described above. BUT the thing here is that you have two other buttons which are very useful: forward and back. it's harder for him to read your dodge patterns when you are doing some unpredictable stuff (duh.) so what i do: when he misses, i press forward, to get closer and move maybe 2 or 3 steps in the same direction.

so: you move right, he misses, you close in (forward) and go 2 steps RIGHT again.

Now obviously you are thinking, like how close? this question is now unneccessary as you will 'feel' when it's close enough/or not.

LG "situation":

Imo, LG is best dodged by good placed rockets. i find it very strange when you counter attack someone with LG who already has an LG on you since he will win it, unless you know about his hp/armor ofc. shoot rockets to his feet when he's beaming, he'll go offtrack (if it's not strenx/stermy/tox ;p).

RG:

know when his shots will be (1,5 seconds reloadtime iirc) but this comes with feeling. just when he's about to shoot, move left or right, very handy to 'double' dodge here in your pattern: left - right - right - left - right - left - left - etc. these patterns seem easy to read as they are written now, but with the suspens as "i have to hit this shot now" he will likely lose focus to read your dodge pattern. This pattern can also be applied to the RL situation but i wanted to tell you about the forward and back first :)

edit: btw in that video you posted, you can actually SEE that he moves backward when the three(?) guys are firing rockets at the same time and in that reload time (as he knows since all of them are reloading) he has a split second to escape by moving the opposite direction, TOWARDS those 2 guys in the entrance. the guy on the stairwell and that guy who just rocketjumped would never expect him to move towards 2 guys, but he did. they expected him to move back and left, to the corner where he would eventually... die. he did it very nice, though those guys weren't that good i think :P (they noticed him slow etc.)

Thanks also about back and forward tip because I use them mostly in close-range fights when you have to circle around your opponent, but I will give it a try in mid-range fights.

About LG, I used to think the same way, till I met players with good accuracy. I learned 2 things from them, that's how smart I am .. only 2 :) :

1. when fighting on higher grounds. Use LG to push back down any enemy that rocket jumps to help his friends. Works with other weapons too, but you can switch faster from one enemy to another with LG.
2. when you need to retreat. Depending on the situation use LG to slow down the enemy, giving you time to escape. Sometimes if he misses to much, you can delay the retreat and kill him.

For dodging you can't do much better than watching cooller vs rapha games.

To dodge rl it often helps to move forward and back instead of just left or right. Usually people aim towards your feet, so you can screw up that aspect of aiming by changing the distance they are from you.

For lg there are a couple different strategies... If you want to maximize the amount you're hitting you can try to mimic the other person's strafe patterns for short periods of time. You at least need to be aware of how they're dodging, then you can just start to aim in that direction in advance and let them strafe into the beam. In fights where someone ends up strafing back and forth really quickly it's usually better to track the inside half of their model, so that you have more time to readjust your aim, and so they have to strafe across the entire lg beam.

To lg defensively and minimize the amount of damage you're taking in lg vs lg fights, pay a lot of attention to the other person's lg beam. Try to wait until they're just about to lock, then dodge in whatever you think the most inconvenient direction to track is.

Low sens players sometimes have trouble with very close range lg because they run out of space when forced to turn a lot. Higher sens players must work harder at longer distances.

For plasma, just dodge back and forth really quickly and try not to walk into a stream.

For rail, just move weird. Try not to have an obvious trajectory when they're about to fire. Good players will hit around 50 percent if you're dodging correctly, which easily turns into streaks of 3 hits or misses in a row.

There's more, but ultimately the only way to learn to dodge or aim is by playing people better than you.

In summary: just point and shoot.

Dodging when their brain is in the "comfort zone" is what I am looking for. Of course if they are tired, bored or just playing to waste time it's not an achievement.

Actually, it's kinda hard to dodge people with extremely bad aim. Most of the time you expect people to aim by predicting patterns or just go for direct hits if close enough, and you can react to that, but bad aimers kinda panic and spray all over the place. Try to be elaborate, and you're bound to grab a rocket in the nads. It's easier to just do the basic left-right against them.

Asking to be taught how to dodge over the internet is like asking someone to tell you how to bob and weave in a boxing ring. You're just going to have to get your ass beat down for hours upon hours to learn how it works.

Even in box, u watch movies and you have trainers who teach you how to fight. Asking for help, sometimes speeds up the learning process.

Always predict enemy's aim and do "bait-moves", like doing a spesific movement twise, then do something else, because most lighly the opponent will think you will do that movement again. More experienced players has that knowlage that they are 1 step ahead of enemy's movement, so they expect you to do that type of move, at that point its all a brain game by positioning and angels. Hard to do it on the fly at first, but eventually it comes natural.

But in 2v1 its a whole other story. +back is a base move when it comes to that, and +forward when you see its safe to do it (when you predict that enemy dosent shoot at a specific place around you, you move towards there without telegrafing too much that youre going that way)

What caught as a rule is:
You have to evaluate an avg skill of your opponent.
ie. a good player will often be surprised if his enemy is a noob by how stupidly he moves, thus aiming in a stupider pattern.
At times if that enemy is wrongly evaluated a better player than he is, a good player will try to aim smarter thus missing more shot because of those noob stupid pattern movements.

Works the other way round. You almost could out aim anyone if you can read people clear enough.

I feel dodging and movement is something just learned over time. Aim can be picked up relatively quickly, ie, there are top tier TDM players that only took to Quake in QL. However, despite having sick aim, you can tell they simply don't have the same dodging, movement and situational awareness that only stems from playing the game for 5-10 years.
In short, don't think about it too much - and just get playing. Your mind doesn't think of dodging theory while in game, it's purely your innate reactions that govern your movement - your innate reactions can only be formed by playing, and not by reading.

I donno about very good players or even professional players how they train themselves to get better.
But if you want to get better and I speak from my experience, you must try to understand, observe, and put it into practice. Otherwise your skill will fluctuate depending on the time spent in Quake.
You play alot, you are in top shape. You take a brake, you will have to start all over again. It's a circle.
I agree with you: "You can't think dodgy theory while in game". Instead I just do this: I try to put in practice 1 max 2 things in a day. I start some games with bots to get comfortable and then I go online.
I make demos also to see the "master piece" :).

+1, it's probably not the best way he could practice, but it's very good to watch for noobs like me.
spawns, silly mistakes their opponents do in fights, etc.
