What's needed to make a map? I'd like to make a decent 1v1 map and most likely fail trying :)

- GTK Radiant
- copy of Q3
- bit of patience to learn how to use GTK, reading the manual and searching the web etc

The hardest part is probably just coming up with a good design for gameplay, the next hardest thing is making it look good, but it depends what textures you use, some are easier to work with than others.

Yes it is based heavily on those maps and a few more. Its kind of a 'compilation' map I suppose.... :) Its got its own thing going aswell though.

No, there really aren't hundreds of good duel maps like the four listed. I know LvL's list pretty well so maybe you could link some that you think are as good. As you said hundreds that should be easy. Most have terrible area proportions and item placement.

I had a problem with the Q3 version of the map:
Some custom textures
and
Couldn't load it from the menu (filename too long :/)

All fixed now, and I updated the link in the original post, so if you downloaded the map before now, you might want to re-download it :)

I played the first beta and it was amazing; hope you find time to finish it someday. I know there aren't many players left for Q4, and most duelers are stubbornly replaying Monsoon over and over, but there are still a few of us who would really appreciate this map.

I had loads of problems with it, technical things.
Also at the time I was using Quark to make the map, and it became so slow it was unbearable, and I just got totally bored of it.

But now I've learnt GTK radiant, I could finish it off... I did give it over to the GTR team, as they wanted to finish it. But I'm not sure if they've made a start on it yet. If they haven't I'll finish it off and post it up. I can't say when, it depends when I get the chance to have a few good goes at it.

Heres a screenshot, you can see it was almost there, so not too much work to do:

Bit of an update - I've been working on the map a fair bit, trying out everything I can and narrowing down what works best.

I've had a few decent players look at it and give some advice. The old version did have some problems, so it had to be changed.

I will release a version of it soon, just want to fix a few small things I'm not happy with. But in the mean time heres some screenshots:

I had to convert the QL textures that didn't work in Q3, so thats why theres tech stuff mixed with gothic. In QL it suits it more. But tbh I don't care too much because all the textures will be re-done in beta anyway.

Well it needs to be play tested, because its *never* been played with two people, only vs bots.

If play testing goes well I'll finish it off, then speak to sync about it. And he'll either say yes or no... :) but I will make sure its a quality map before asking.

If anyone wants to play test it, come to #bstmap on quakenet and I'll play it with you, or just go to the server with a friend.

Then after playing, put your comment here, especially if its a good one ;---) that would go a long way towards convincing id its worth adding.

change the player clipping left and right to RA at those boxes, thats smth that makes me wanna strangle mappers.

edit: actually there are a few places on the map where i run into invisible walls, thats pure rage material

Going to release a beta soon, layout is done, just texturing/detailing/lighting etc to finish now. Its kind of cool, now theres a lot more textures in ql :)

I tested it with some very good players and they really liked it.

So how did you get it running with the QL textures? You unencrypted the QL pk3's, took them out of QL, into q3, and then make the map for q3, and then stick it into QL again?

Those screens really were just for the layout, theres about 2 hours of messing around with ql textures there. Trust me its going to look good, I promise :D

The alpha was pretty much Q3 only, for gameplay testing perposes, the beta is QL only, for graphics perposes.

I spent a long long time working on the layout, determined not to touch how it looks, I really didn't want it to be all show and no go. I want it to play as good as it looks and vice versa ;)

besides that i'd place RA near jumpad and remove stairs near it, remove hole in the wall and move teleports closer to RL. IMO there is too long sight line going through shards corridor, i'd lower ceiling in intrance to corridor to breake this line

About the line of sight thing, the raised ceiling on the entrance is a new thing I tried, to free up the movement. It wasn't play tested. But I suppose I can free up the movement and get rid of the line of sight by moving the entrance further in when I lower the ceiling.

I don't really understand the point of the RA room changes though. Can you explain the reasoning behind them please?

I know that in test version which I prefer there is no this corridor causing long view but i think now that removing of this corridor is a bad thing coz in this case all roots are concentrating in central area and you cant escape any room without going to center. so IMO the best layout will be test version with corridor from base version, with RA moved to here

another couple of things to think about : teleport exit leading to RA room - it actually dublicates way to RA near which it placed making this way less usefull. mb it's ok but you can try to place tele exit somewhere in corridor between ra and mega room, mb closer to mega room.
and broken bridge - mb rebuild it? just to cover lower level seeing from upper level to make lower level more safe? if it will work in this way

Yeah I am going to have another look at that tele because the way it was set up, was so you could jump onto the RA platform, but its not there anymore so its a bit weird now.

Not sure about the bridge, will have a play with it, but last time I tried it it felt a bit odd. But the maps a bit different now :)

It's not my role to comment on competitive 1on1, but I feel the map is good.

Maybe I'm biased by playing Hektik and Aero lately (which are not only small in overall size, but also compact and cramped, if you know what I mean) but playing this map I had the feeling that the scale of everything was too big, as if it was a rocket arena map.

I would love to see this added to QL and being able to duel in it.

Just ran around the map for 5 mins and the first thing that struck me was that its not a duel map. Its simply too big and complicated and is a +backers paradise. I think it would be much better for duel if it was made smaller with those long uneccesary corridors removed. However, I found the architecture and the design of the map very interesting in places and this map definately has potential but as of now its more suited to 2v2 or ffa.

The maps had a fair amount of play testing (albeit in q3) and it didn't seem too big at all (its about the same as furious heights but maybe even smaller). But I agree it could be a nice 2v2 map aswell.

No official word from id yet but sync said he liked it very much. So hopefully it will get in.
If it does it will be tested in the ql focus group before its added.
It has been tested in Q3 though, by some v.good players.

Map has a great flow and I really feel that it embraces aggressive playstyle with so much possiblities to aggressive rocketjumps to get even more speed for strafing. You have done very good with routes and how you can move fast around map.

Only thing I feel is still somewhat lacking is the lg room. Ground level of it should be more spacious and glass box or whatever doesnt really look good / fit too well in its place. I would suggest to change glassbox to somekind of generator thingy.

i played the map offline, and i had no missing textures aside from the teleporter. it could be that i have the proper textures overriding these ones, because i have all the ql map conversions, and all the .pngs in them have been converted to .tga...

either way, the server is up, and people are welcome to come play. the config is still pretty horrible though.

Cheers m8. If you can get it working, then yeah, would be great. However it does use a lot of QL textures, some being .png files, so it might not be that easy(?).
I can make a q3 ver if needed, but I'm pretty burned out atm (and busy with tons of other stuff), so will be a few days time.

the textures are fine offline, because i use sv_pure 0, but on a pure server theyre all missing. its cuz i have so much custom crap... its still playable, but it would be best if you converted all the textures. i could, but im waaay too lazy :)

added it to the server. i dont know if i should leave the server up all the time, just because thats not how we've been doing it up until now (we would start the server only if we wanted to play), but other people who rented the same server just left it up 24/7.

either way, its set to load this map + 1v1 by default, and im trying to get the motd to display a link to this thread, but for whatever reason, the first 2 lines of the motd are being overwritten by some osp/cpma links, and i cant remove them.

you can add it to the op i guess

one of the first things i noticed was that the map was sexier in general than it used to be.

then i ran into a wall because there used to be a hallway there.

then i noticed that you removed the fence floor, and i was really happeh!

then i left the game because it was boring :l

the map looks really, really nice. good work.

I like it, lot's of good ideas in it. I would get rid of the mesh between the pipes on this picture though. It would allow to shoot some rail/rockets.

Yeah, dunno really, I added that mesh in beta4. Little things like that need some play testing really. It could be cool but then again it could be too annoying. Sometimes things like that, which seem to be cool, turn out to be annoying Oo

Well like I say I don't know, I guess there is some kind of problem (maybe legal stuff?) they are working though because cityy has some maps ready for ql as well. Both of us haven't had a map in ql before so I guess if we get our maps into ql it'll be under some new agreement. Its just a guess though. No I'm not demanding money or anything like that.
