I don't think any of those players (ie, griffin, ERMAC, gellehsak) were ever successful from that point forward. Griffin told me, albeit sarcastically, he'd quit gaming if I made money in a tournament, but at the same time, how much did that kid make in the past 4 years? In summary, that point is moot and it's all opinions. All you and I know for a fact is that I beat you every time in Q4 and it took a game neither of us were familiar with for you to beat me at anything at all.

I smoked for a couple of years when I was young, just didn't agree with me, I don't do it at all now. Never got high, always got stoned, always felt useless. I don't like gaming or doing anything that requires a bit of thinking like that.

The L4D on acid was a lan party at my friends place, not me playing by myself in my room.

I can understand what you mean in regards to weed, it doesn't work for everyone.

Possibly sports have a similar effect but for most people will be tired of one or two hours of intense exercise and there are all sorts of positive side effects to that.

I mean sure it wont stop many of you playing videogames but you have to wonder whether the human brain (in general) has suitably evolved to spend hours in a fastpaced flashy 3D environment on the one hand while society and its demands are way different from that on the other.

There's tons of risks and harmful consequences of playing quake, sc and so on. This guy is totally on to something. While cocaine may be a farfetched analogy, there are certainly many cases of addiction. In addition, it's safte to say that thousands of hours of any game will change your brain in quite drastic ways that we have yet to fully understand.

I love more than anything to diss science. And in this case i think it's justified. Not because what they are concluding is not true, but because it is either trivial or uninteresting.

People want the science and the statistics to do the sober reflection for them, instead of doing it themselves.

Anecdotal evidence is given a bad rep, but really, a quick youtube search give you first hand experience of what exactly it is that is at stake.

In the same way, observing oneself closely can be much more fruitful than trying to relate these astronomical averages over tons of uninteresting people to give you knowledge of what exactly it is that it can do in each particular case.

The loop is more clearly displayed in these vids than any study like those psychology dabble in can ever show.

Anyway, "silly research by associating anything with anything" covers quite a lot these days. People tend to accept uncritically those that confirm their bias and reject those that do not by pointing out the obvious flaws that can be found in almost any such study.

This leads to these endless debates where each study is a pawn in a bigger game that eventually seems to lead nowhere. This leads to a situation where any finding is "controversial" - which basically means that we should be paranoid and suspicious of any claims.

Given such a situation one has to devise ingenious algorithms to weed out motivated reasoning (which is nearly impossible when the motivated reasoning is ubiquitous and polarized), or not form an opinion, or try to reflect on personal experience objectively.
