The plutonium is much hard to detect cause it only gives alpha radiation and at a moderate but constant rate, alpha radiation also is shortlived (once emited) but extremely harmful to biologic tissue. Even the xenon gas cloud that is said to be no problem, is in fact a great problem. With it speedy decay, it creates many dangerous isotopes which are slowly raining ffs. This gas has already covered the entire nortern hemisphere. The rest of the ugly stuff is slowly doing the same cause dust particles going up on Fukushima are picked by the Jet Stream.

from my very limited knowledge it's somewhere along the lines of:
a cell's dna is damaged (be that due to sunlight or radiation or for x other reasons) and the body's attempt to repair that dna fails, mutations are possible. cancer is a product of several mutations, most mutated cells die before anything like that happens.

dna damage - new cell uses said dna - anything can happen but mostly nothing does - 'cancer' may develope.

On a serious pitch, my grandfather died of cancer caused by radiation. He worked on the nukes they dropped on Japan (ironically as that might be, in the current discussion). Nuclear agents are nasty stuff. I never even got to meet him. Died a good while before I was born. Nuclear power is nothing to fuck around with. I can't imagine why, in the modern age, where we can use things like wind and solar, people continue insisting on nuclear.

Im not nuclear plant expert, but honestly I expect that the evacuation zone in Japan has too small radius, since fuel cores in some of the reactors are already melted
(remember - only 4 of them were damaged during the earthquake, and propably the situation is out of control on around 2 of them or 1, by which i mean that they cant stop fuel core meltdown, since their coolling options that they have for disposal are just not sufficient for this situation).
Melted fuel will be coolled off in special kind of theoreticaly - full tight pool which is built underneath each of the reactors in case if situations like this would occur, after which the whole building will be sealed in sarcofag like in Chernobyl. Anyway the emission of radiation in japan might be still be increased, since the reaction is still happening, its not like a nuclear explosion or anything like that, its high emission of radiation that can not be stopped in any way for the moment, until all the melted fuel will be in that pool.
By the way about the opening "explosion" - it wa caused because of the failure of coolling systems, the steam that is beeing heated up by reactor core and powers the turbines (that produce electricity that's how those type of reactors work) wasnt coolled, so it destroyed the reactor system, causing the beginning explosion with some emission of radioactive substances, making the cloud that is going around the world right now.
Homever, the emission of the izotops was the highest just right after the beginning, due to really short half life, cloud that is floating right now is not dungerous in anyway, cause the radiation is just really low at the moment, so basically there's nothing to be affraid of outside of Japan.

Anyway I think that radioactive emission right there will be getting higher and higher for some period of time, and im not sure if people out there are informed about this, cuz there's not much that is beeing spoken about it on the newschannels in my country, people out there might be on a really serious danger, the question is if japanese government would want to cause such a big panic in Tokio and surrounding cities that would occur, but as I said, this statement might be partially false, I dont think ive got enough knowledge to make any sure statements

Kopp Online, Xander News and other non-English news agencies are reporting that the EU implemented a secret “emergency” order without informing the public which increases the amount of radiation in food by up to 20 times previous food standards.

According to EU bylaws radiation limits may be raised during a nuclear emergency to prevent food shortages.

But there is anger across Europe because this emergency order was issued while officials say there is no threat to the food.

You guys really didn't get the point. The point is not how bad the fukushima situation is (it is already not far from Chernobyl though), but how the Japanese fucked everything up and made it so bad.
Maybe you should know more. One example. There is another nuclear plant in Japan called "Monju" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monju_Nuclear_Power_Plant). An accident in 1995 stopped it for 15 years, and they restarted it in 2010. In 2010 another accident stopped it again, and this time, they are not able to repair it. This thing now cost them 100 million dollars per year to maintain, but can produce 0 electricity. The amazing thing is, the Japanese have to maintain it for at least 1,000 years until it can cool down itself. This reactor could explode at anytime if they fail to maintain it. The guy who is the leader of the operation team suicided for this matter. Now it's just a timed bomb.

Test runs will continue until 2013, at which point the reactor may begin to feed power into the electric grid, being "full fledged" operation.

On November 24, 2000, Japan Atomic Energy Agency announced their intention to restart the Monju reactor. This decision was met with resistance by the public, resulting in a series of court battles. On January 27, 2003, the Nagoya High Court's Kanazawa branch made a ruling reversing its earlier 1983 approval to build the reactor, but then on May 30, 2005, Japan's Supreme Court gave the green light to reopen the Monju reactor.

The restart was scheduled for October 2008, having been moved back five months.[2] A restart date of February 2009 was again delayed due to the discovery of holes in the reactor's auxiliary building; in August 2009 it was announced that restart might be in February 2010.[3]

In February 2010, the JAEA officially obtained the OK from the Japanese Government to restart the reactor. The restart was definitely scheduled for the end of March.[4] In late February, the JAEA requested the Fukui Prefecture and the Tsuruga City for deliberation aimed at resuming test operation. With a go-ahead from both entities, the JAEA will be on track for starting criticality testing in March. After testing has begun, it will take several months before commercial operation can resume - as for any new nuclear plant.[5]

Operators started withdrawing control rods on May 6, 2010, marking the restart of the plant. The Fukui Prefecture governor, Issei Nishikawa asked the METI for additional stimulus to the prefecture including an expansion of the Shinkansen in turn for the restart of the plant. Monju achieved criticality on May 8, at 10:36 AM JST. Test runs will continue until 2013, at which point the reactor may begin to feed power into the electric grid, being "full fledged" operation.[6]

This casued all the problem I mentioned. Cause they are not able to get this thing out. Most probably, this thing damaged the reactor core as well. The Japanese have no mean to detect it, and just can let it be. You think you can drop a 3.3 ton thing in a nuclear reactor and continue using it?

Let me explain this to you in more detail. This Monju reactor is a breeder reactor. So they need to remove the generated fuel from time to time. This "In-Vessel Transfer Machine" is like a giant tweezer, which gets into a small hole on the reactor shell, and takes old rods (which contains generated fuel) out. When it dropped inside, they are not able to take it out, as they don't know where it is inside of the chamber. Inside the shell it is filled with liquid sodium, which will burn when meeting air. In this way they cannot open the shell. They had shut the controlled reaction, but natural reaction still goes on. As the reactor is generating new fuel (that's why it is called "breeder reactor") when it reacts, they have wait for a long long time until the react finally stops.
