Just get another CRT, it's more than just a monitor. If your hands get cold it can warm them up; if you need something inexpensive to hurl through the window in case of a fire a CRT is perfect; if you get mad and punch your screen you're the only one getting hurt, not the tank-like CRT.

i'd hate to start a debate here but... those kinda exist already. the problems are elsewhere as the op stated, image quality and viewing angles and some others things (eg. backlight bleeding) are still bad.

LED backlit is shit (lack of uniformity, blue tint etc) unless you mean the superexpensive RGB LED used in professional displays.
And why would you want built in scaling when the GPU does a better job?

And as zealot said, the Alienware and the BenQ (apparently they fixed the ghosting in the new firmware) are pretty much what you're talking about. The Asus one is supposed to be okay too, and the LG ain't bad although its colours seem awful as no one has managed to calibrate it properly.

Well, I don't have a very recent nvidia card so maybe that's why I'm fine (on DVI that is, over VGA and HDMI GPU scaling was an absolute nightmare and I gave up)

The Dell U2410 is a pretty solid monitor but it does ghost and does have a tiny bit of input lag.
Far better PQ and viewing angles than all of the 120hz monitors however :)

If you want a 120hz that doesn't look too bad you must look at the BenQ and the Alienware, but they aren't cheap though. Or you can wait for a better one to be released...

I got a 2233rz now, there is a slight difference between crt@160 hz and 2233@120hz but I really find it to be neglectible.

I had 3 crt die on me in the last year, my impressive sony 21" died, two iiama 19" died (wtf iiama? or should I say Llama...)). also I got scared because I move with my aunt and unc... I mean because the last samsung crt that lived made weird noises, high pitched static with certain colors, popping noises...it would have died very soon, adding to my history of ~8 broken crt in 10 years. this technology sucks.

My 10 years old CRTs highly disagree with this statement. You just happen to have VERY bad luck and you aren't making a proper use. :>

after using crt 10 year, I am using now notebook, its like fresh air for my eyes... i can spend 4-5 hours in day on pc and they are ok, with crt, after 3-4 hours, you feel blind...

Depends on the person and the CRT. My eyes were perfectly fine with my old CRT for like 10 hours straight.

So what is the general consensus on the best new flat panel monitors available purely just for gaming? (FPS, UT, Quake, etc.)

I'm more concerned with how smooth is plays....input lag, ghosting, etc. Proper colors, lighting, whatever is secondary.

BenQ, Alienware....is this the best there is today? How do they compare with a standard 120Hz crt (smooth playability)? on par, negligible difference, or very noticeable difference?

I have a co-worker who may be ordering a monitor pretty soon. We would appreciate any advice or opinions.

AFAIK the 2233rz and the Acer 245 have the lowest pixel lag (and therefore the least ghosting) but regarding colours etc they are pretty crap. Input lag is rarely measured properly so as long as you don't see 16ms+ in the reviews don't worry about it.

If you also want 1080p decent colours etc, the BenQ and Alienware are better (and much more expensive too).

Compared to a CRT.. well they work very differently and a properly working CRT still has the edge no matter what.

my settings are very similar to those i found off a review i read, guy did extensive calibrating and stuff i cba with. the rest are linux specific settings.

exactly the same with my Acer, pretty much all TFTs (especially those meant for '1337' gamers) have shitty settings by default (dynamic contrast enabled -> the colors are over saturated, by far too bright and too vivid, there's too much contrast etc. etc..

and that's why kalston's statement is full of shit.

The BenQ and Alienware are not that bad with default settings.
The newer Acer (GN) is almost ok but the older ISN'T.

It's not like any of them are great regarding colours anyway (even calibrated), they're still just TN panels etc.

it is fucking hard to get proper crt's these days. the one I have changes its brightness and clearness every few minutes. it is extremely annoying but w/e.

i asked noctis to send me one of his old crts but the bitch does not even want to do it for 50 bucks. he is too lazy.

All have their cons, but pretty much cope with your description. (having in mind your description is not really demanding)

Keep in mind that on a TN panel the colours look different at the top and the bottom of the monitor (even on the best ones), best seen by looking at a purple/orange background. Shadow detailing is pretty poor too (decent on the Alienware)

Also, the LG is said to have more colour banding than the others, which could be very bothering in videos.

Make sure you keep that in mind, especially if you're coming from a CRT.

No it is not for work. Just a hobby from mine otherwise I would have to get a separate monitor as tn panels usually suck. And yeah I'm coming from a crt so I'm a bit afraid that I'll be disappointed but I cba to use my 17" crt anymore. saw one going away for 120 euros on ebay last week. used but good condition.

I have an Alienware 120hz @ 1080p and can't say there is any noticeable input lag at all. The picture is great - a little bleeding, but you don't noptice it when you're gaming only when you have a very dark or black screen i.e when you're booting up... so not a big issue really. I'm sure graphic designers wouldn't be happy, but we're talking gaming here and for that it's great. The only real gaming problem is the 16:9 aspect ratio. Never realised how crap that was. If I'd known, I'd have bought CRTs until they finally produce a 16:10 120hz flat panel and then make the switch. So that's my advice wait for a 16:10 panel at 120hz and grab it! It will require a Display Port connector to ensure sufficient gfx bandwidth, but these are becoming more common every day, and VGA should still be an option if necessary...

Unfortunately this aspect ratio seems to be falling out of favour with manufacturers for some reason.

and there are three 120 Hz 16:10 lcds, namely the samsung 2233rz and two viewsonic's. there resolution is 1680x1050 though - for me that is not an issue although I have a 1080p screen at home. I would prefer it to be 16:10 (1200p :p).

Yeah - that's what I meant 16:10 1920x1200. Didn't really consider the lower rez 16:10s... I don't really want a monitor smaller than 24 inches. My AW is 23" and I feel cramped.

Where are the goddamn OLED screens that are supposed to completely best CRTs already? Did technological progress fall into a ditch or what?
