You can do 75hz via vga i believe. It's still rubbish though.

You're prossibly confusing it with VGA mode.

It should output whatever the laptop is capable of, most are around 75hz max. The F keys or Func key + something else might need to be used to switch between laptop screen and external.

Only time I done this was connecting it to flat screen tv so I limited myself tp 60hz.

your laptop is limited by what it can output and the TFT will reach triple figures, so you're not going to damage anything.
