Nice backend "upgrade". Have experienced way more problems and slowdowns since the "upgrade" than I ever did before. Site feels like I'm running on 56k, that is when it actually loads.

during last week the site were often very slow, which they have fixed with an... "update". in order to improve the site and the game they are going to need to close down the site sometimes, that doesnt mean they are moving backwards.

lol dark. You are so naive. Easily half of the updates from any given changelog are fixes that were applied due to poor testing and according to one ql moderator who has posted about this issue already, complete lack-thereof (testing that is).

It's fairly obvious to anyone looking in, that everything id does is rushed, done without proper planning and implemented simply to make the project appear "Alive".

Again, without proper support from bethesda, this game will just crawl along at perhaps a slower pace than duke nukem forever at this point. In the meantime the "niche" community that sync and co want so bad, is only continuing to shrink more and more.

Already, everyone who joined since quake live went into open beta status, has dissapeared and we're back to the same small crowd that was initially invited or wanted in badly enough in closed beta. In other words, no progress in 3 years in regards to ql population #'s.

What have we gotten since? some maps, a scoreboard, new awards, new cvars (that already exist), and freezetag. They;'ve also however, taken away the leaderboards and stopped updatign stats in people's profiles, the thing that probably brought people over from q3 in the first place. Right now ql is no different than q3 and doesn't offer anything extra, other than the ability for you to spend more money towards the project, money that actually would be better applied elsewhere.

In short, these updates are nothing more than eye candy for the unaware noobies who don't know the history of ql and how it's progressed forward. To them, any update is AWESOME. But ask them again in 6 months and you'll get a different response from the majority of those players (if they even still play at that point).

i do agree with u. to rely on old quake3 players for activity is just moronic. a huge part of them are prolly +20 years of age and have other things to do than playing games. quakelive is slowly dying as the number of new players doesnt match the number of people leaving the game, and on top of that people who are paying for it.

Then you are wrong, half of my friends-list joined QL not longer than 2 years ago, I myself joined in 2009 when open beta started and keep on playing, enjoying, flaming and whining ingame, so your toughts are wrong.

By the way Quake Live allready offers more than plain Quake III Arena (or even Team Arena). To get roughly the same experience in Quake 3 you need:

- Quake III (Team) Arena
- OSP/CPMA
- Several MB of map-downloads from lvlworld.com or elsewhere

and you still won't get:

- Game Statistics and Rankings
- Some small stuff like Blur (correct me if I'm wrong but I think it is not in Q3/CPMA), Killbeep, QW-Shaft etc.

Really ESR you are such a whiney-emo-bitch community. Fucking start appreciate what id gives you or in 1-2 years you might be back playing old Q3 with <1000 actual players over the globe and no tournaments apart from some Online Fun Tourneys and local LANs.

I am no troll. I am telling you what i have seen with my own eyes having played this game for 2 years now and mind you; I have the 2nd most played hours in this game. Only krailed has more and i haven't even checked if he still plays. Bottom line, i HAVE SEEN FROM EXPERIENCE, how the # of servers have easily halved since this time last year. If you want proof that i've played that much just say so and i'll show you a screenshot but be warned pal, i am no troll and i can prove anything i tell you.

I have seen these so called updates. In fact, they were a laughing stock the first year. If you can track down matefeedkill, ask him what he thought of them. He plays regularly with syncerror and .403, but prior to that he was my co-chieftain in clan pip. A clan of over 100 members i had for 5+ months. Long story-short; me and him used to joke around about the "cvar updates" for a long time on irc with others. Everyone was complaining about the "lack thereof" in regards to the updates. You telling me otherwise shows you're new to the scene.

And to say Quake live offers more than Quake 3 stockwise? Who the f cares what q3 offers single player. Q3 has a custom modding community and they have made numerous maps/mods for the game. I'm surprised you inserted lvlworld into your reply as you should know, looking through that site, that it is filled with just those maps.

Game statistics. Are you kidding me? Do you have any idea how badly those stats have worked over the years? Dude, newsflash, the leaderboard never worked and on top of that, it's now gone after it was stuck for 5+ months last year. And sift through people's profile stats sometime. They're borked beyond belief. You tell me if you believe your own stats, honestly. They're not updated anymore so save your breath lol.

If you truly joined this game in 2009 as well and never complained then you are part of the problem. Sometimes you have to rise up against the machine to get it to change it's bad ways. Oh and, those so called "trolls" you m ention about here on esr, are the very people who spoke out against id for years hoping they'd change or take their suggestions. I know many people like that myself. Imiol, rexcramer, combo, wobbo, etc etc. Those guys left hundreds of suggestions, very feasible ones; and id simply ignored them. And those suggestions could have helped save the game.

1. What exactly do you want to tell me with the first 2 parts of your post? That you are wasting all your time on QL and can prove it? That you had a clan with a lot of people in it? Should this somehow impress me? I don't give a fuck if you were in the biggest clan out there or if you have played more hours of QL than anyone lese, that does not say shit. However I will simply belive you (altough beliving a Anonymous-User is as save as climbing into a van with "candy" painted per hand on its site) and perhaps you actually have more experience with QL than me.
It does not prove me wrong in any of my statements it does not change the fact that 50% of my friends in QL play the game not longer than 2 years and did not play Quake 3/4 before (read they started with QL during the open beta), aswell that does not change the fact that I myself started with QL during open beta and before that I played CS:S as my main game and some W§W in between.

2. My whole point was, that if you simply sign up for Quake Live and install it (~20 minutes of time wasted on this) you will get more than if you buy Quake 3 (Team) Arena and install it. If you want to get the same ammount of stuff in Q3 as a newb you will have to google/read a bit to get everything you need to start playing in tournaments or on pickups, while in QL that all in the game. But you are right that Q3 offers way more when you know where to search and that the updates QL-Devs give us are miserable when compared to what Q3 can offer to us (can because you first need to know about all the stuff).

3. I know id is not doing anything that helps the community. I myself used to post some suggestions, but gave it up since they don't listen anyway. Wake up id is a fucking company, the only thing they are interested in is profit, if they don't get anything they won't do anything it's as easy as that, and the Quake-Scene does not give anything since like forever. So why should id do anything? Only because they are nice people and love the community??? THEY FUCKING SHIT ON IT THEY WANT TO PROFIT!

4. I did not spend a single cent on QL and won't do it unless they actually give me something I'm interested in or if I will see a huge improvement in my game (what I doubt). As long as the game is still there and has some players I will continue to play, enjoy, flame and whine in QL, but when it dies I will switch to something of more quality.

1. i was just trying to prove to you that i am no troll and that i have been here from the beginning (open beta) I mentioned the clan simply as a segway to prove to you that i know who matefeedkill is and what my relationship with him was before i explained to you how we used to talk about the updates. In regards to time played; it was to show you that i have seen the difference in ql population (in all modes, i'm one of the few with the award for having played every map 10 times (at least). And as i said, the amount of servers have decreased steadily since last year especially. It's certainly possible that your friends have stuck around more than others i know, what is your mode of choice?. It's perhaps an omen that ctf is indeed broken, as my friends were all CTF specific players.

2. i agree with everything you said in this passage and it is most likely the reason noobs stick with ql as it is indeed much more difficult to get started in q3.

The QL release was front page on digg/reddit/4chan/gaming blogs, so it got more than enough word-of-mouth advertising. Other browser/f2p games don't advertise with signs/commercials, but they still manage.

Minecraft pretty much owes its entire success to reddit.

that level of advertisement was apparent when ql went out of closed beta but i didn't see that level of commitment after last years quakecon ql sub model announcement. Then again, the gaming journalists who covered ql's initial release probably feel there's very little news worthy headlines in regards to ql. Quakeon this year will really set the mark. If we're not left with ooh's and aah's it's a done story.

Throwing more players at the game and hoping that they stick is exactly what caused the game to fail to begin with. The vast majority of players have zero interest in competitive gaming, so it's not like the huge losses that they've incurred were merely because of a lack of tournaments. As you said, gtv/lan/maps wouldn't make much of an impact to most people - they obviously didn't stop the death of Q3.

It doesn't need advertising - it would need an entire remake into something that doesn't even remotely resemble a game like Quake.

look through his games history. he loses and quits a lot (because he just goes for frags) but he always dominates fragwise.

What's cleary obvious here: putting new accounts in tier 3 doesn't work. He's played more than 20 games and he apparently loses on purpose to remain in his tier (tier 3) (more solid proof that tiers are not determined by frag/death count and more on win/loss, when it should be the opposite (how does id not know that, answer: they do).

In conclusion: Despite his 60+ games and despite dominating every game, he stays in tier 3 by quitting/losing a lot... (allowing him to play down in tier 2)

if the skillmatching system worked on frags, better players and/or cheaters would forceably be moved up a tier. The better players would therefore be skllmatched and the cheaters would get their asses kicked and stop cheating.

As it stands now, by basing a skillmatching system on wins/losses or points. The good players/cheaters can still go 100-1 and purposely lose the game to keep their sv rating low enough allowing them to continue to slum low tiers.or by not capturing flags/defend the flag in ctf specifically. (eg: low point total)

So in conclusion it should be a combination of both points and frags that determine the sv_rating of people. Points, for flagrunners and frags for slummers / botters. But certainly not wins/losses or points only which rewards stackers and helps slummers.

you fail to undersatnd the logic. Slummers know the system is based on points so instead of actually trying to win for their team, they just frag away to a 100-10 score or something knowing full well that it won't impact their sv rating, keeping them in tier 2/3. If, however, more emphasis was put on frags (along with points), then the 100-10 slummer would still gain sv points for every game he has like that.
