Well, the root cause of this is that id relies on volunteers to provide coverage for a game they want to sell. That will ofc not work in the long run.

Of course, QL will never survive permanently. That doesn't mean it can't be successful until something better arrives. Look at Starcraft in Korea... I realize, they are Korean, but the point is, a game should and can survive competitively until there is a suitable replacement.

The world of 'pro-gaming' is different from normal gaming. The same standards cannot be accurately held to both.

quake only survived because people who grew up with it was still playing. now that theres time to attract new players they are at major disadvantage. take this as an example: todays choice is either cod with cool gfx and low skilled playerbase or quakelive with bad gfx and playerbase with 10 years of experience.

i seriously doubt anyone of the younger crowd would go with the 2nd, knowing they would have 10 years of catching up to do. on top of that, i bet a game like CoD looks way more attractive than quakelive to gamers who didnt grow up knowing the history of quake.

i doubt korean starcraft would have survived if not so recognized by media. starcraft has been recognized as a sport in korea, cant rly say the same for any game outside of korea. other than some coverage by eurosport, professional gaming isnt rly recognized in the outside world.

yeah, guess u could say that. im from sweden thou. but im gonna be honest, lately now, SVT (swedens first TV channel or some, everybody who owns a TV got it) are starting to show some intrest in e-sport.

Well in Germany there has been some main stream media interest in eSports for years. We had ESL TV as a normal cable-tv station too though.

The EPS has been the most important national league for years, now with CS tournaments fading and so many SC2 tournaments with more pricemoney, yeah, it kinda lost its importance. Still, the ESL has done very well in Germany for years and has been the most important entity in German eSports long before they went international on a bigger scale, they even signed the German postal service as a sponsor for the EPS.

So they had to close down the Scandinavian and British EPS, what does that say about the German EPS? Probably nothing eh?

I think for them to survive though they will need to become a bigger player in SC2 and probably hold more offline events around Europe, maybe even scrap the IEM concept.

yeh, dont know much detail, all i know they had to close events mid-season and such. maybe they are doing well in germany but that doesnt mean too much i believe. if they werent forced to close down events, they wouldnt.

Are you talking about the IFNGs? They had to cancel the events because local politicians forced them to after a school shooting in Germany. Politicians didn't want CS to be played there, ironically huge trade fairs for weapons in the same cities were fine.

A shitton of other LANs were forced to cancel aswell, again local gun clubs were allowed to do just what they wanted one particular event was called "Schießen auf dem Schulhof" or "Shooting in the Schoolyard"(maybe someone else can come up with a better translation, am in a bit of a hurry right now) was allowed although a LAN on the same weekend in the same town had to be cancelled.

Also the year of the shooting was probably the best year for the ESL financially and viewer wise, there were more IFNGs planned as in every other season but the cancellation of most (or even all, not sure) events in southern Germany (I believe it was Karlsruhe, Stuttgart and Nürnberg that were cancelled) was a bit of a disaster. I believe price money didn't drop until the economy crisis hit though and while most of the international events and leagues were cancelled or closed down like the CPL or ESWC the ESL survived.

i'm not sure if id relies on anything. i thought people were casting because they want the community to grow, not to do what id wants them to do. and i think lvl^ justgave up. nothing wrong with that. i can't blame people doing volunteer work. as soon as they got the recognition they deserved, they got lazy. and why shouldn't they? they don't have to prove anything, they're in the big leagues now.

really? :D other than 2gd as duel caster theres nvc and ischju, neither of them was ever very good at it, and as i understand, 2gd is a free agent. only thing they have is more or less disrepute and vor covering only tdm, which they are doing great.

they were doing small cups all the time and after one big tournament (can't remember wich one, maybe fnatic beatit/dreamhack) they got loads of donations and were congratulated from all fronts. since then pretty much nothing except for vor, nvc and disrepute doing tdm like you said.

exactly, its rare than something ever happends on lvl^ outside of the tdm. lets take TheBeard for example, if u were to put 2gd on his side his stream would be equally good as lvl^s, if not better. as it looks today, i wouldnt dotnate 2 shits to them

to me it seems like dis & vor actually enjoy what they do and disrepute's passion for tdm is obvious. ischju/nvc just want the e-fame, which they got.

nvc is still casting duel from time to time, ischju casts ctf from time to time

lvl^ covered not only Dreamhack, ugc and fnatic's cup but also did a lot of streaming at the IEM world finals

it's just they keep out of the 1-day online cups like zotac etc....


lvl^ is in my understanding covering the most competitive events (that often were underrepresented), it might be a good idea to at least stream the semifinals (both of them!)+final of those 1-day cups to strengthen their profile (ev. with nvc cast? i'd enjoy it)

but casting zotac from 14:30-19:00 - that's usually the feel-good-crews of the day's work. it was holyshit with forecast+partner and recently beard.tv who did that. germany now has moppz filling that spot fantastically. it's fun and relaxing to watch, but it's not so much MY thing.


PS: you could always become a streamer yourself. you need good upload bandwidth and an acceptable processor, but then you're good to go

and in general, they always did their work out of personal motivation in their free time and if currently there is nobody who wants to spend every sunday evening with streaming then that is a bit sad, but i can understand it and there is no reason to blame them. its not like they promised anything in the first place

no im not saying they should stream _every_ zotac cup, but cups where they have streamers online and time to do it, then they should imo. watching quakelive online play isnt funny when forced to listen to russian/german everytime.

lvl is not only about duel? they also cast tdm and the ctf nc and some other duel stuff from time to time and thats on top of major events...

"rely on pros to carry them" you are getting the wrong idea, they could stream alone but they know that having a pro on stream offers more insight and that the viewers love it, so they step aside like at dreamhack where i am sure they were motivated and would have like to cast more, thats a nice move and not desperation. and they never claimed that they have good duel casters btw

when i question why they still are sticking around for, i mean mainly their duel section. havn't heard ischju cast a duel game since the zotac before UGC, and before that i think it was DH. to expect any duel casting from nvc are just wishful thinking, considering the guy has played 13 hours during the last month.

they might not rely on pros to do the job for them, but im sure they are well aware that it actually can happen. its not like they are looking into new duel casters or their current casters are trying to improve.

its not that they dont cast weekly online duel games, its that they almost never do it. since fnatic beat-it (summer/winter?) its more than rare that u see lvl^ listed under streams when it comes to online duels.
