Is the singularity thing before or after the next mass extinction?

Kurzweil predicts this will happen around 2045 if I remember correctly. Dunno if a mass extinction happens during this time :)

If you are into futurism, i recommend you check out Summa Technologiae by Stanislaw Lem. The original is in Polish and it is unfortunately hard to find an English translation of Lem's work online, however i did find this.

Sequenced my DNA for 50$ @ 23andme a few months back. The amount of stuff that's happening. Lockheed Martin just bought a quantum computer, Creg Venter and his team have created the first synthetic cell, 3D printing seems well underway, and IBM is on its 15 year quest to simulate the human brain.

On the other hand, if I knew in 2005 that Facebook would dominate, that we'd still be playing Q3, a clone of SC, Second Life with 500k players and WoW, with the great new games on the horizon being another FF game or Diablo, then i'd probably have understood the skepticism better.

While Internet saturation went as expected, and is prognosed to continue steadily into the Third World, and mobile devices gradually replace stationary PC's, a lot of the quality seems copy/paste.

Instead of looking to a select group of thought like Transhumanism, or Singularity University and so on, I'll find different elite communities doing crazy novel stuff. Luckily in this age we can find and relocate to concentrated sites of exploration and discovery.

Morally questionable people of the frontier doing Neuro Psychology, Quantum Computing, Synthetic Biology, Implants etc. is the place to find radical new conceptions. There is no taboo in the concrete. If you're interested in Eugenics, go to dog breeders. If you're interested in Cryogenics, watch the biologists push mice to the limit.
