Some time ago I decided to stick with Quake and play it as long as possible.

Im from Argentina and i must say thanks Avekkk. Here we have a lot of good players who can challenge the best, im one of the top players here. its a shame we don't have the qualyfiers and the resources to travel to the big Lan tournaments like dreamhack, esl, etc, etc...

uh, trust me, he is lifting weights alright. he does like 200kg squats and shit like that. his legs are probably twice as big as av3k's now. and i dont even wanna mention his arms :D if you want to compete in rugby, you have got to be one big as motherfucker. (I used to play Rugby as well btw) also I loved how av3k played vs strenx. he is playing way smarter, using rockets very effectively and just taking angles that strenx does not like/has trouble to deal with. plus, strenx plays very predictive at times (item whore) and av3k exploited that fact by positioning himself accordingly dealing a ton of damage every time strenx tried to pick up an item.

moppz should really take some English lessons. He can pay me, I'll give him some. Speaking of which, strenx still wants me to give him lessons about prepositions. Apparently, that is his weakness :)

First of all, if you really knew something about bodybuilding you wouldn't say he's taking roids, as the majority (most "fashionable" ones at least) of those, besides the huge strength boost (and various other effects) terribly reduce the bodyfat.
He's most likely bulking like there's no tomorrow, which I fear he's going to regret in case he's interested in getting to sub 10% levels soon.

Secondly, you might be not aware of the difference between PowerLifting and BodyBuilding, let alone how the muscular tissue works (jesus christ, "wors possible quality muscle " ? please go read a physiology book and get a clue): before I let google do the dirty job for you, I'd like to underline how most of those underwear fitness models your girlfriend (read: hand) drools on are, by definition, bodybuilders (some of them even competing at high level in other sports, noticeably fighting ones, were speed and reflexes are a must).

Thirdly, those exercises you mentioned, besides being fundamental for strenght/mass grow, are done by many other sports athletes to enhance their performances in various degrees.

As for the last point, you have no idea how I enjoy picturing you as an obese neckbeard in denial, attempting to criticize those who work hard (and love the process of doing so) to achieve something in their lives.

it really depends on what body type you've got and also if your muscles are about endurance or power and as sou can see he is a typical endo-meso, so actually made for the powershit instead of running marathons.

bb is mainly a sport where your genes matter. you build up muscles to show off how your body builds up muscles (aesthetics, volume, symmetrie, power etc.).

If your grandma played while she was young, had the willpower to improve and a coach to tell her what she was doing wrong (if she did not see it herself), sure. Right now she would probably have trouble holding the mouse still and learning things.

So one 18 year old player can play 4h per day and hit high accuracies while other 18 year old player that have different parents, comes from other continent can be at least middle player playing 8h per day.

In my opinion talent is the ability to learn better particular skills, enhance own weaknesses but also all biological factors like time reaction, perception. My gradma is weak in the matter of that factors, I have better reaction and perception than she, but av3k has better than me. In other hand my gradma cooks better than av3k and me.

I'm working as programmer and this is also my hobby. I like it and I was able to understand and learn it very fast and well, while av3k could be trying to learn that for ages and still not be as good as I am. We could say that I have talent in that domain, but for me it is nothing special. I don't feel my talent, it's something normal for me, but for someone else like my grandma and av3k it's something unachievable.

I should be more precise. Of course physical predispositions have some effect on your skill level, but I think that effect is often overestimated. Most important of these is willpower and determination.

Also, I don't think you started to be interested in programming (or related) in high school after finishing a class with a literature/history bias. If avek wouldn't be able to become good at programming now (which we don't know) doesn't mean that he couldn't become a programmer if he had focused on math in his earlier life.

I can agree, but I believe that we are designated to concrete roles in society by our genes. I think this is not really our choice if we will be good at math or not. Of course there is always a big field to improve in every area what requires a lot of hard work.

I spent so much time helping many different people in different age with math or coding and I know it very well that some people are just thinking in wrong way in some aspects. It's something that cannot be learned.

When I gave this interview most of all I just wanted to present you myself very well . Just to let you guys know more about me . My point of view on quake , scene , players , inside game and life and things in my life :) . I thought most of all I will see comments about my games . I think all of us are here mainly for Quake so it would be nice to add something new to our scene . I think quake is a great game but im afraid it can end soon cause there are games more popular then quake :( . I dont make a lot of interviews but this time I did cause i feel that I really miss times when i was 100 % dedicated to this game . why are people surprised the comments turned out more about the bodybuilding and pictures rather then the interview?

this kind of interview (questions and answers both) have been done for alot of players and there is not much new to it to attract attention, the bodybuilding and pictures are much more interesting to comment on though.

That was so long ago... Av3k was kid when he set that. I this he's relationship with cooller changed now too. I don't think they're don't like each other now.

I mean, just don't put anything words on ppl who you don't know to much. You are able to say some words which can hurt someone. We should enjoy the quake and stop talking shit about shoes and cellphones, becouse it is JUST stupid...

If I start drawing and have my willpower drive me to become the best painter in the world, somehow I doubt that I'll succeed and my paintings will be shown in museums :D I happen to be particularly bad at painting, even at school my drawings was funny. But sure, I might have become a decent painter eventually, after a lot of years of stubborn learning how it is done. But certainly not a genius with international fame.

Pro quake players can be easily compared with geniuses in other areas. In numbers.

Imho, to do something you need to understand particularly well how to do it. On a subconscious level, like having a natural grasp of something. If you don't understand it, then no amount of will power can help. You'll put it all in wrong place, mindlessly trying to do something unhelpful.

And what makes you think that after all those years of training you won't be able to understand drawing on a subconscious level, given you've trained properly and hard enough?
It's all about putting enough time into anything. Technique matters as well, but the time factor is crucial. You just can't speed some things up. You can have psychical predispositions (by psychical i mean brain structure as well) but in the long run that doesn't matter THAT much.

You speak as if there was a set of precise rules and procedures for everything, and mastery was about mastering this finished set to its fullest as quickly as possible. But is it really true that meticulous precise instructions always exist and that they always lead to the same result? Or even that everybody can always learn to understand this precise technique?

That said, I agree that putting time into something helps, I just think it would be wrong to expect to become the best. It could happen, why not, but it could not.

That wouldn't be real understanding, just learning the standards and copying them. That would produce a decent painter who copies others, but somehow I think that genius is somebody who sees a "picture" of rules in his area in such a flexible manner that he can innovate.

it's a self fulfilling prophecy, people who are initially not good at stuff rarely put as much effort into things as those who are. there's also an element of fun and competitiveness,

if something is fun and being competitive is usually fun, you'll put more effort into it. most people usually give up at the first step.

If you don't know what is wrong and how to fix it, then what are going to put effort into? Doing something on autopilot changes nothing in its quality, even if it's fun.

I believe that understanding is entirely separate from effort, and enough effort won't necessarily produce understanding. Unless we're talking of something entirely precise, like math.

this is debatable. sure if you got no clue why you suck then you probably won't make fast progress. on the other hand someone in the know could easily tell you: you suck at football because you are: too fat, too slow, have bad team play and can't hit the ball for shit. I imagine most people won't take the best out of that information.

anyway my point was that people who try something, suck at it at first, usually give up there. even tho they might have actual talent on a higher level of play.

That's what coaching is for: if you get stuck and stop gaining progress from practice, then you need someone to give you hints how to practice more effectively.

I don't believe in your assumption that people had some predefined limit in their brain that they could not pass. Of course inborn features matter, but it's not the crucial thing in making progress. Work hard, and you get "talent".

Btw you should read "Talent Is Overrated" by Geoff Colvin. He's cited some scientific research about the issue.

I've probably not expressed myself the way I intended to, so let me rephrase my thoughts so that we're both sure we understand each other.

In my opinion there's no real threshold, no invisible glass wall, no skill roof even that differs two people regarding getting better (let's - for the sake of discussion - define 'getting better' as the ability to put your will into any activity with an increasing precision/efficiency) in anything, with the exception of sheer psychical predispositions - think short basketball player, that's an awful cliché though.

While I don't necessarily think there's one fixed way that'll get you anything and works for everyone, I do believe that, provided with enough time, you can accomplish anything, and "having a natural grasp of something" (so called talent) gets you merely a better start.

For me that's a bit romantic approach to the subject of artistry, it's all about (conscious, sane and done in proper way) hard work, just like anything else.
No real 'genius' involved, ask av3k whether he thinks his genius made him go that far, or just all those relentless hours spent before the monitor screen.
The more time you've dedicated towards something, the better control you have on a subject, be it drawing, playing quake, or fucking your girlfriend, the broaden your horizons become, and eventually the more creative stuff you can pull off.

I have personal experience in the artistic area, athough obviously not with painting :), and my conclusions about it are that rules are superficial and can be tossed away entirely. Nobody really knows what makes some people better than others. Hard work is a requirement, of course, but nobody really knows for sure what the result of it depends on.

I actually like the mindset that you present, everybody can achieve anything, but I'm too pessimistic to believe in it in its entirety. If our characters differ, preferences differ, opinions differ, why can't our dispositions and possibilities differ? I'm not saying it's hard-coded in us, but obviously there's something in childhood (maybe) that makes us different. And so far people have big difficulty with changing even their characters and preferences consciously.

Um you cannot really compare video gaming to painting can you lol

+1 ischju but from what I've gathered and from only what I have heard cooller seems to only workout primarily chest and arms if even arms. Your back is the source of your strength. I say avek would thrash him in an arm wrestle.

plus playing vs noobs all day long wont make you better. if you want to excel at something then you usually need someone who challenges you and possibly is always one step ahead.

You always have to consider why people learn to get better. There is intrinsic and extrinsic motivation with the latter having less on an impact on your performance in the long run.

If a teacher teaches you math and you don't get it because you cannot wrap your head around there is two solutions: First, you can just try to improve it because you know that if you fail, you will not pass the class.

Secondly, you could simply just try to understand your weaknesses and work on them because you "want" to understand and the reward is simply by solving the problem. This is fun and this is what makes you better in the long run. Do the pros still play for money or for the thrill of competing? I

I've been playing Quake for many years and I did it for the fun of it. I wanted to compete, I wanted to get better, I watched demos and just tried to play as good as possible but at some point you cannot get better. You will probably reach your zenith and and you will improve incredibly slowly. For me that was the reason because I played with people that were as good as me, and not better.

Playing versus good players is sort of like punishment. You lose over and over again and finally you get a frag or two. But the intrinsic motivation may be weakened because you cannot be arsed to get raped all the time. This is why most of the people prefer to play vs people of their own skill and not beyond. I have always hated to play duel because I do not like to be raped but that is wrong imho. You have to take something away from the game and finally improve on it: rinse ad repeat.

I remember when being in my fist year of University there were a couple of guys who have been abroad and their English was insanely good. I was jealous and I wanted to improve my proficiency as well so I tried to read/listen to and speak with many people as possible.

I did so many mistakes, my pronunciation was crap and I just did not have enough knowledge. At some point, I finally got better (I got back from the UK) and people noticed that I was more fluent, more creative with my words and most importantly spontaneous. Then I talked to one of the guys (again after a year or so) and I realised that I finally had surpassed their level of proficiency. They ask me where I've been etc. and I said I went to the UK for 4 months while they had been abroad for a year.

The point is, some people just get really good really fast but they will never go beyond the average Joe because they do not want to take the extra effort to break that average Joe bubble. I do not know how to phrase it but that is how I think it is.

btw: my pronunciation was always crap: In school (6th grade or so) we had English names. Mine was Keith. I swear to god, I was never able to pronounce it and my teacher fucking annoyed me and wanted me to do it properly. I never was able to do because he forced me to (extrinsic motivation).

If you want to get better then love the challenge, excel and be prepared to experience some major humiliation on the way.
