Terraria has pretty fucking fun multiplayer if you can join a decent server, requires very little bandwidth. It has somewhat frequent updates and is going to make use of all Steam features pretty soon afaik.

well, first of all, you don't give hardly enough information for anyone to make any kind of suggestion or inference about anything. second, there's probably not much you can do even if you had.

what brand and model cable modem do you have? how do you have it wired up? do you live in a house? is the modem close to the box outside the house, or do you have a long ass haul between it and wherever the modem resides?

about all you can do on your end is change out your wiring and other related equipment. if you have a modem with a user-serviceable interface (or if you want to be a hacker, one that can be accessed when it wasn't necessarily intended to be), you may be able to determine things like line noise and signal strength. for a typical cable modem, something like -10dBmV to +10dBmV received signal strength is good. SNR in the range of +40-60dBmV is good for downstream, from memory. actually I don't really have the numbers too clearly in my head, but you can easily go to dslreports (broadbandreports) &c. for such information, or just google cable modem SNR.

if you have a bad signal, you may want to check to see if your wiring is RG-59, which has a higher impedance than newer RG6 coaxial cable. replacing old RG-59 cable with RG6 is simple; the connectors are the same, so it's basically just a drop-in. you can expect to gain +10dBmV of received signal strength that way. barring the success of this, or in addition to its success, you may want to procure an in-line amplifier to boost the strength of your signal. you can buy a passive one at wal-mart for $30.

this should sort out most things on your end. also make sure you don't have an excessive number of splits; ideally, you want one initial splitter at the head of the signal where it enters your house, with one dedicated line going to your cable modem. finally, your modem may be old or shitty. I recently replaced an old SB4100 that was causing me some hassle in QL. I'd had that modem for 10 years. it still works great, but, for some reason, it didn't work well with QL, even though my network and stats were all fine. I think it had to do with the way packets were handled by the older modem. it seemed to create a bit of jitter--a really minor instability of my ping, but nonetheless that seems to affect the QL client-side prediction code significantly, as it's reliant upon round-trip time information to make adjustments. well, that's my hypothesis at least.

no, that actually seems pretty fine. the one thing I notice is that you're synching on 110MHz. that is an extremely low frequency. it actually doesn't even make sense. TV channels exist within that band. maybe your provider has only digital cable, though? either way that's the weirdest thing I think I've seen.

ya the modem is an all in one. it handles the internet, cable tv, and phone. it also tried to be a wireless router, but thankfully i disabled that crap and used my old one. *which i've been using flawlessly for the past year+

Okay this might sound very dumb but the only time I had such bouncing ping was due to massive packet loss which was happening because the junction box where local cable provider attaches their line was simply loose / rusty. Gave them a call and they fixed it. This might not be your case but its hard to explain such difference in rtt to the same ip unless your routing is through satellites or something!!

for all i know, it might be going through outer space. :/
