don't think so, this is almost exactly how it is for me

where are u located? chi and toronto are the only servers that i will touch (30-40 ms), rest.. GA, VA, TX, NY are (50+ ms).. GA seems to be the worst for me (60 ms)

I actually hate that some games i want to get into are in servers I can't get a good rsponse out of.

yeah if I can ping 16-24 to Chicago, I'd love to see what it would be to Columbus, Louisville, etc.

see that's exactly what i don't understand. I even ping better to Toronto than any other US server other than Chicago. I mean, its Canada FFS.

i haven't spent alot of time on private servers, so I can't really say, but glad someone chimed in that has.

yea I doubt that. the QL netcode is remarkably flawed. I don't know what the crap is going on, but suddenly 3-4 months ago everyone is warping and I get hit when the enemy isn't even on my screen yet. I miss easy jumps and rails go through. I warp into enemy rockets. it's fucked and not even playable.

since i've moved ive been testing stuff on an alias

i now ping a lovely 45 to chi, 55 to tx, 55 to toronto, and anywhere from 70-130 to the rest of the US

For some odd reason, GA servers always feel like complete crap for me. Ping or packet loss isn't the issue, it just feels like my actual latency is double what the scoreboard or lagometer tell me. Typically I ping about ~50 there, when I should be at 35-40. Though on TX servers on ping ~50 (which is pretty good) and feels much, much better. Even the rare times my ping is normal on GA servers, still feels like crap.

that exactly feeling happend to me back in the days on NL server - bottom line: sometimes you just have crappy server hosts. i mean look at the .se server. they lag constantly and they are utter shit (last time i played!)

that is nothing new at all. TX has always been like this for me. IL sometimes is, NY sometimes is, GA sometimes it. it keeps changing. it's getting worse overall, too. now I can't play ANYWHERE without horrible lag. I have no packet loss, I have stable ping, and I have a solid 125fps, but it looks like 30fps and feels like 200 ping.

yeah this is an accurate description of what i'm experiencing. Its not necessarily the ping most of the time, its the rest of it- lags, stutters, etc.

I've heard ppl talk about the 'sweet spot' for latency around 40-50, but it still acts like its double that, the way the game acts.

Otherwise I'll just feel lucky to have the low latency I get for certain servers. Compared to others, I'm getting a pretty good connection.

you have to face one thing people. it is probably virtually impossible to have good things in the US since you country is so fucking huge. everything below ping 50 in QL is awesome - no need for ping 30 :p

that's not true. in any other context it would be, but overall it isn't. it's perfectly reasonable to live on the eastern seaboard and get sub 20 to NY, GA, VA, and maybe IL as well. it's not uncommon either. this has nothing to do with how the netcode feels, though, like function9 said. even on servers with 30 ping, sometimes it feels like 100. it's different for every player. sometimes it changes location; it's not the server hosts. I think part of it has to do with the memory leak bug that remains from Q3, where servers that weren't rebooted for a long time seemed to screw up the physics. I really don't know what's going on, but I'm pretty sick of it. I can't even play.

for me i'm right in the middle of all these servers (with the exception of Toronto & Dallas)- I'm about 500 miles away from NYC, Chicago, Atlanta from my location, VA is about 300. Do the players in the EU have this much distance between them and servers, or less?

I'd say less, for most people that is.
But here there are so many countries in a such a tight space that the latency takes a hit with the amount of nodes etc. However we have a lot of fast and responsive links.
From Paris to Moscow (1500 miles or so) you can get about 60ms with a decent net and good routing. I sometimes do play on Russian servers and it's actually playable although the routing often goes mad in the middle of a game.
I even ping Riyadh at 80ms (2700 miles!), guess the oil helps a lot in prioritizing packets.

yeah i wonder how much that has to do with it.

It's kinda strange though, cos I can get about 150 ping on US West Coast (tried Los Angeles and Las Vegas) from Europe and about 90 to NY/Washington so I guess there are actually some decent links available too...

also, i ping better to toronto than NY. 30-35 in NY, 20-25 in toronto. 25-30 to CHI.

I lived in downtown Chicago and pinged 10-15 to IL servers. at some point it changed to steady 40-50, the same as i pinged to NY and Toronto. I figured it was an ISP issue.

Im in MS and ping lowest to NY/Toronto(wtf?), all the other servers are 60+ ping. Private servers seem to be worse. I used to ping 35-40 to tx/ga/va/chi and 75-80 to CA/WA now those are 100+.
